My husband and I stayed for 5 nights. This was our first time at an all-inclusive resort. We had a nice time. This hotel is advertised as a 4 star resort but it seemed more like a 3 star place to me. Beware the “personal concierge” that bombards you when you are checking at the front desk and asks if you want drinks. Becky gave us a lot of information about the resort that the front desk agent didn’t (which was nice) but she ultimately wanted us to see her presentation (1.5 hours) in exchange for free snorkeling and a Mayan calendar tile. The rooms definitely show their age. We stayed in building 19. We were in our first room for 2 nights but changed because of loud neighbors. The second room we stayed in was just as loud and we figured it’s because each of the rooms has a door to make the room adjoining but that takes away from the soundproofing. We could hear everything our neighbors said (in both rooms). Our second room had a big chunk missing from the bathroom countertop and the floors were cracked and had missing grout. The rooms were clean though. Overall, we were pleasantly surprised with the food. The a la carte restaurants were not very vegetarian friendly, the buffet had great veggies to pick from. The food at the buffet actually seemed fresher than at the restaurants that you ordered off a menu, very strange. The resort was fantastic! It is right on the ocean and the pools are great! The staff was very attentive and friendly. Will definitely be returning here.

Purchased package through Orbitz - All inclusive so no transfer to the hotel. We were over charged for a cab ride "TO" the hotel which is about half hour away from the airport. Cab fare should be about $36.00 one way !!!! Check in was quick and easy! It was really nice to be offered a ice cold drink when we were checking in. No free wifi! Had to pay $100 for 7 days which I thought was wayyyyy too much but felt we needed it to be able to communicate with my family back home. Food is very good at all restaurants. My favorite was the Mediterranean. Staffs were very attentive and friendly. They had shows most nights to entertain. Pools are lengthy and right by the beach. It's easy to find a spot by the pool but difficult to find one by the beach as most of areas are reserved early and for only platinum customers. Overall this is a 4.3 hotel in my opinion.

This is second time I've been here and can't wait to get back again with as many of my grown children and their children (my grandchildren) as possible. I'm sure they would all love the place. The grounds are exceptional, the pools are clean and warm, the wildlife all around the place is so exciting to see and hear; it makes the place feel like disney world but you know it's the real McCoy...............

Very nice resort, the grounds were great and well taken care of. The staff appeared to know their roles and had difficulty helping outside of them. So whenever there was a problem or need it was difficult finding someone to help. Everyone just sort of pointed to someone else. Almost comical if you're not the one with the problem. So the view was great, room was nice, service was lacking.

The All Inclusive, amenities, and activities were not explained well. You have to make a reservation for dinner otherwise you end up with a bad buffet. There are only a certain restaurants that have breakfast or lunch. You have to reserve the restaurant days in advance otherwise they get booked ... so boo! The "animation and sports" staff are always in their own little party and you don't always feel welcomed, they have their own little party going on and it seems disorganized. Beach is full of rocks. Pictures are of the Platinum side so beware. There's no food outside of the restaurants so there's no snacks by the beach or by the pool which sucks because you have to stop what you are doing, get in line and sit down and eat a full meal instead. On Christmas Eve everything was so disorganized, on the Fuego show there weren't enough chairs so more than half of the people had to watch an hour show standing up. No one tried to fix it, the animation staff were watching the show instead of trying to find chairs for the people to sit in... Positive: The ground staff and servers were always so nice, friendly and helpful.

I can't say enough about this resort. It was everything we expected and much more. The staff service was incredible, the food and drinks were delicious. We did a snorkeling excursion at the Marina right next door and the guide was awesome-as were the beautiful fish and coral. The beach was pretty rocky which limited our time playing in the ocean, but the beach was well kept. The resort staff cleaned up seaweed daily, making the view picture perfect. There were ample beach chair, umbrellas and hammocks to enjoy the beach and sound of the waves. We traveled with our teenager and another family with younger kids. The main resort pool was super fun with a killer waterslide and ledge to jump from (enjoyed as much by the adults as the kids). I recommend this resort highly and would definitely return!

Many nice aspects (beach, pools, spa) but poor response to complaints. A lot of walking with requested rides that never showed. One of our rooms had bed that smelled moldy, despite 6-7 complaints. Specialty restaurants were poorly run.

Was nervous that the resort wouldn't be reflective of the pictures that were posted bit was pleasantly surprised upon arrival. My reservation included VIP/"Club Platinum" privileges which was awesome. The resort consierge and butler (Joseph) were very attentive and accommodating, as was the rest of the resort staff. The room was great and housekeeping provided clean towels and other essentials daily. The food was good, a lot of variety. You do need to bring water shoes and snorkeling stuff as well as a plentiful supply of sunblock. We ran out on our last day and they were selling sunblock for $30!! You do need to be weary of those who try to sell you excursion packaged and or time shares before you can even exit the airport. I was approached by a man wearing a laniard with the hotel name on it, which he made a point of pointing out to me so I would speak to him. It was only a matter of minutes however before he asked for money up front to secure the discounts he was offering. We had a great vacation and would definitely return.

Absolutely more than I expected for the price! We had 9 people total, 4 Junior Suite rooms. The resort was well taken care of, many items we noticed were brand new or very close to it. The staff was VERY friendly - especially Juan Luis (waiter) and Edilberto (restaurant manager). Juan Luis would bring hand made figures to the table almost every day - grasshoppers, roses, etc. The only con I can see is that you have to purchase wifi if you don't take the upgrade to the platinum club. We didn't because of the cost, and we really didn't miss out on anything. The gift shop could be a bit bigger, but the jewelry store on site was great! Overall, it was an excellent value and resort!

The service was great - plenty of staff and they were very attentive. The shows were good and they had a lot of entertainment options. A ton of water sports and boating options too. Great infinity pool and spa. I wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

hotel was great . food was great and free. so were the drinks. hotel room was also great. only thing is hotel is secluded, private area and away from other places, like the town and other hotels. taxi cab ride is a must and you have to haggle for the cost. they try to base it on the dollar rate of exchange which they have a different rate than the hotel. you have to bargain with bell hop which has affiliation with the taxicab. wifi is not free and cost a lot. $15.00 a day or $60.00 a week. Right off the plane, looking for your grayline ride back to hotel, el cid hotel employee intecepts you and try to sell you time share, tries to get deposit from you, disregarding how tired you already are. Instead of guiding you to your bus, they stop and try and sell you time share instead. This timeshare business and paying for wifi are the two worse things I can say for the hotel.Hope they can really correct this because it makes them look bad. Otherwise, the all inclusive stay was wonderful. May come back.

The staff were friendly and accomodating. They gave us a book of coupons that we could use during our stay. However, when my husband and I upgraded to a different room to be closer to family, they would not honor the coupon. The facility was well kept, food was abundant but the water was murky. We did not swim in the ocean and stayed in the pool. It probably had something to do with the time of the year. Our room key was defective twice after we had upgraded to our new room. It took forever to get someone to check it out but they were very helpful nonetheless.

I thought that the El Cid Resort and Spa was a good value—be sure to upgrade to the Platinum club to get a better selection of liquor.

Stayed in this Hotel last week/weekend. Hotel is OK for families. Food options are average to bad, unless you eat everything that walks, crawls and swims, it becomes difficult to choose what to eat even in a regular buffet. Dinner restaurants have one pager menu with very limited options. Service and attention of the attendants is excellent, every person is very courteous and ready to help (please be sure to tip them). Language can be a barrier though, unless you speak Spanish. Hotel premises are good, with good security. They have 2 pools, one is Hugh with a water sliding / jumping options which is sure to entertain the kids and adults alike. Rooms have nice space but they always have an odd smell, may be that's the smell of the cleaning solution, but I couldn't stand it. Beach area is good with good number of chairs/umbrellas but so much seaweed in the water preventing us from venturing in to water, they clean a small portion of the water but even then the water is very murky. The hotel scores on Building / Services / Kids entertainment but goes down in Food/Beach area.

It's too far from activities and the transportation becames very expensive

Just got back from a one week stay with two teenage daughters. This was our second stay at El Cid and we loved it just as much the second time around! The hotel is beautiful, the rooms are spacious, the pools are great. I would recommend upgrading to platinum, if possible. It guarantees you an oceanfront room, which is a huge plus. Loved siting on the balcony watching the ocean. The only negative at this resort is the seaweed on the beach & they can't help that - just depends on the current. They work tirelessly trying to remove it every morning, but depending on when you go there can be a lot of it. I'm usually more of an ocean person that a pool person, but we definitely opted for the pools this time. There are 4 restaurants to choose from and a buffet. The Italian restaurant was very good, the others were okay, but the buffet always had something good. We especially loved lunch, where they always had fresh grilled fish, which we ate with salsa. Yum! I notice that some reviews complain about the food - if you go to Mexico and order a hamburger or pizza, it probably won't live up to your expectations! Try something new. They have so many options, you're bound to find something you like. I want to give a special shout-out to Oscar, the bartender at the beach bar, who made fantastic drinks. All the workers there are very friendly & helpful. Love their hammocks and beds on the beach. It's a wonderful place to go and relax.

Awesome food,room and service. The staff is there to ensure you have pleasant experience. This was our 5 trip to Riviera Maya and one of th best. The only bad thing was beach, rocky bottom and a lot of seaweed. When you spend 4K you would like to enjoy in turquoise water not the pool. There is room for improvement but overall very happy with hotel.
