If you’re renting a car in the U.S., you’ll at minimum need a valid U.S. driver’s license, or a license issued by a country that has a reciprocal agreement with the U.S. Some states require international visitors to show an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to your valid license from home (note that you have to apply for the IDP in your home country). You’ll also typically be asked for a major credit card and—if you’re waving the rental agency’s coverage—proof of insurance.
Depends. Most travelers are already covered by their personal auto insurance. You may also already be covered through your credit card. Cards such as the Orbitz Rewards Visa Card, for example, cover car rental insurance, although—like all insurance—there are stipulations like type of vehicle, type of terrain and country you’re renting in. Call your credit card company ahead of time to confirm your coverage. If you’re not covered, don’t worry: You can purchase collision protection on Orbitz right as you book, or at the rental counter.
Sometimes! Some countries require an International Drivers Permit (IDP), while others don’t. Some U.S. states do require international visitors to have an IDP. Find out more about when and where you might need an IDP.
Usually, but it depends. Easily compare rates for one-way car rentals from dozens of car rental agencies on Orbitz to make sure you get the best deal. Also, if you include pick-up and drop-off areas just outside of your target location, you’ll have a better chance of finding a much cheaper one-way rental.
So you like to travel in style—we get it! You can rent luxury vehicles on Orbitz, too. Just go to Orbitz.com/cars and select filters like “luxury,” “convertible” or “sports car” to find the ride that best suits your style.
Many car rental companies in the U.S. require drivers to be at least 21 years old, while some only rent to drivers ages 25 and up, or require anyone under 25 to pay a surcharge. Read the fine print on your car reservation, or call the rental agency ahead of time.
