An honest review based on our visit. First the good. The property is huge. You have access to I believe 5 other Barcelo adjoining properties and it’s enormous. The beach at Maya Riviera is great - no rocks and little to no seaweed. The pools are beautiful. The rooms are good sized and modern. They have a hot tub on the balcony which is nice. The food is all-inclusive food, so it’s fine. Not great. Fine. The drinks are the same. The entertainment is 5/10 as compared to some other all-inclusives I’ve been to. Opportunities for improvement: Check in. Check in was a bit slow and they really didn’t give us much information at all. There’s not a daily paper in the room that tells you what entertainment is or with a map (which is much needed). Finding phone numbers to the spa etc, means a call to guest services. The pool is great but they NEED many more chairs. If you don’t get out by 9-9:30AM you’ll be trolling for a place to sit at the beach or pool. There needs to be more chairs. If you’re only there for 3 or 4 days you’ll have issues making reservations for any of the ala carte restaurants. Most, if you walk by, have plenty of open tables after around 7:30. That could be better. There are buses that run from resort to resort. You’ll figure this out because there is no information about it anywhere. You want to make sure the bus is running in the direction you want to go or you’ll be on a very long bus ride and walking will be faster.
We just checked out this morning, and our stay was absolutely exceptional! Our only complaint is we couldn’t stay forever lol. We loved our service from Antonio in the French themed Restaurant. Felipe, Alexander, and Gildardo took care of us like no other during our taco bar experience. The resorts buffet offers a diverse plethora of food options, and doesn’t give off typical buffet dinning at all. You are greeted, sat, and served whatever drink you desire: coffee, sprite, even margaritas etc... the small details that Barcelo takes to show how much they appreciate clients is just stellar. It was like every day we came back in from a day of adventuring. They left a small trinket to let us know how much the value and appreciate us staying with them. Last but certainly not least this resort offers it’s a guest free transportation and passage to enjoy, visit and dine at its sister resorts (all located on the same compound) I can’t wait to plan our next stay.
This was our second stay at Barcelo, and we were delighted to be back. We were put at the furthest room from the main functions. Our only comment was we paid extra for an Ocean View. We had to go way outside on the terrace and stretch to catch a glimpse of the Ocean. We requested a different room and they complied.
Properrty is amazing. Check in was very slow. Dining service varied. Some was excellent and some we felt invisable. Pool area and beach area world class.
Easy access and availabilty to the beach. The buffet closed at 4:30 most nights which limited the dining options on site. The food at the buffet was amazing though. Transportation could be difficult coming back to the property. Needed to ask which direction the bus was going. Great adult only resort.

My family loves the pool at the Adults Only. This vacation we spent a lot of time in the pool by the music bar. The pools are never overcrowded and always have entertaining things to do. Our rooms this year were on the 5th floor right above the lobby. I read reviews on how terrible these rooms are but we loved the convenience of the rooms, the only negative was our button for the cleaning service was broken. That is a minor issue, which is outweighed by the convenience to take the elevator staright down to the lobby/bar/dining/pool. This resort is definitely the place for my family, I hope you give it a chance and enjoy it as much as we did.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Barcelo Maya Riviera. The facilities are great as are the beach, food, variety of things to do and others. I did thing the drinks lacked in quality. The regular margaritas, pina coladas, and other drinks used a mix which tastes like it has a sugar substitute in it, like aspartame or the like.I can taste when they are present and don't like them. Ask for a "natural' or "skinny" margarita. I also think if you stay in the "Premium" building they should offer some kind of transportation to the lobby or other places. It's a pretty good walk. Other than that I recommend the place without reservation.
The property is beautiful, they cleaned the beach every morning, there are many different pools. Only one pool has music and it would get busy. The buffet was good, the waiters are happy to help you with anything. Taxis from the resort are expensive! There are local buses that pass through the street, I was only able to use it once and it was much cheaper than a taxi.
Love the pool and Agave restaurant.
