The Jakes Hotel family is unparalleled. From the moment Andre picked me up from Mobay airport, I felt like I was among my folk. The ride is 2hrs and thought I would sleep since I departed Pittsburgh at 5am. But the reggae music and the exceptional conversation, coupled with his very safe driving had me eyes wide open all of the way to St. Elizabeth. Check in was a breeze, thanks Adrien & Colleen. Once I stepped onto the other side of the office, I was transported to a magical seaside wonderland. I have been stalking this resort online for about 3 years because I visit Jamaica annually and was looking for something different and always off the beaten path. Private, yet safe. As, my first Christmas approached after losing my oldest child to cancer, I needed an environment that would nurture and support my healing.I noticed couples, families, and solo travelers like myself, so Instantly I felt at home. I spent 4 glorious days in the oceanfront bungalow Seapuss 3. It was my private slice of heaven with my bed looking upon my private deck and the ocean. The outdoor shower was everything. It felt like just me & the ancestors. I DID NOT LEAVE THE PROPERTY FOR A THING because I didn't need to. Between the kitchen at Jakes, Jack Sprats & Dougie's Bar my belly stayed full and my thirst stayed quenched. Wake, bake (literally & figuratively), read, mediate, journal, play in the sand, enjoy the water, sleep and repeat. For the piece de la resistance I had an aromatherapy massage at the Driftwood Spa prior to my departure. It's been 33 years since I've spent Christmas on the beach (Guam) and oh I think I like it. This may be the beginning of a new Christmas tradition for me and my family. Needless to say I can not wait to come back, my birthday is right around the corner...
Pro: -direct beach access -beautiful rooms with spacious verandas/balconies -good fresh food -friendly courteous staff -pool -beach view rooms -best cocktails are made here -walking distance to other beach areas -aircon, mosquito nets around bed -free beach towels -beach chairs / umbrellas Cons; -pricey food - Not the most beautiful beach (but this is really a perspective/ preferential thing!!)
We started our holiday at Jakes, which was the perfect way to start our Jamaican adventure we experienced the real Jamaica and got to know the locals. A unique little hotel in a small fishing village, a place to relax and unwind eat local and fresh and start the day with a yoga class. Lovely sunsets and laid back atmosphere, we got out and explored the local area which is Highly recommended. We hope to be back one day!
We originally booked Jake’s for a week. However, after the second day, we knew we had to leave! Staying here feels like you are a prisoner ! No where to go, nothing to do, creepy & unfriendly staff. Rooms so dark , ( very low wattage lightbulbs, and lamps so low beside the bed, they were useless. ) So with no tv, no entertainment, nowhere to go, ...we spent our evenings reading by our phone flashlight. Totally boring!!! There is no town, to walk to . Literally no where to go, nothing to see! The staff tells you to walk along the road to find some local bars. What a joke! The road is unsafe to walk along, full of potholes, & fast vehicles swerving to avoid them. Unthinkable to try walking at night, in total darkness. These few ‘bars’ are shacks, accessible through dingy yards, and fields of weeds. The 1 restaurant on the property is very limited & expensive! There is also a pizza house, about a 8 minute walk, not worth writing about! Can’t even swim here, dangerous undercurrents, and a gross pool, the size of my living room! Oh and beach? There is none! Just a 10 foot cliff, dropping into the rough ocean. Save your money & stay home! You’ll enjoy it more! .... Or enjoy the rest of fabulous Jamaica in Negril, Ochi Rios, Runaway Bay! We thought we would try something different, after 15 wonderful vacations in Jamaica...BIG MISTAKE! We did manage to escape early, after begging for a 2 day refund. and salvaged the rest of our holiday at an all inclusive resort! As one German couple, exasperated about moving to a bigger room for double the price, said to us, and to the clerk, as we were checking out” Never Again”!!!!
Had the pleasure of staying a Jakes for four nights recently really enjoyed it all. The transfers, through the hotel, were not cheap but the drivers were good and it was great to here the history and have them point out interesting sites and take me for jerk chicken. If you prefer to rent a car go ahead cause you’ll be more flexible and the cost is not prohibitive. Note, it’s a long drive and GPS will be essential. Jakes is as seen on the website. My room, Seahorse Up, was great for me. Really liked the daybed and the shower is a beautiful blue tile. The old time shutters/bathroom windows really give that old Jamaica feel. Both restaurant served good food with good service. The staff were attentive and the service very good. I can’t say I had one bad service experience during my stay. I’ve stayed at many all inclusive so taking money alone with me became a drag do I just signed everything to the room including gift shop items, meals, tips, spa treatments, yoga and excursions and settled the bill at the end. Yoga with Empress on the yoga platform above the spa was a highlight, she’s a very good teacher, excellent vibe and timing. Pelican Bar excursion, Black River Safari and Lover’s Leap were definitely worth seeing for me. But my favorite part was walking about Treasure Beach and feeling so safe, Calabash Bay for a chat with the fishermen and playing dominoes at the Breds Sports Complex then watching the National School championships in soccer and netball and just hanging with the local people made Treasure Beach feel like so much more than a holiday. So walk the streets, talk to folks, take a tour and you’ll leave Jakes feeling inspired.
We came as a yoga group of 10 arranged by the yoga instructors. I had no idea what I was in for. We had the most awesome stay. Our room was right on the beach, large and so comfortable. The entire property was so charming and beautiful. The staff were friendly and so helpful. We had an amazing yoga space overlooking the ocean. The food was great also. This is a real Jamaican experience. Loved it!
Stopped there for a meal in Dec 17 and had an excellent meal.....It was not cheap by Jamaican standards but it was very nice.....I recommend a visit! The food was great and the company in the place was good too..... I had the steak and it was huge!
We booked to stay 10 nights - where did they go.....we thought it may be too long but we loved it, and didn't want to come home. The staff are all fantastic Rooms are lovely Food is best we've had in the Caribbean Loved being able to feel safe walking out, no hassle from anyone, great cycle tour, walking on the beach in the mornings was lovely, breakfast up the road was great. Everyone very friendly and seemed pleased to see us. Jerk at the store turn right and 2 mins up the road was fab (on Saturdays) Fantastic snorkelling and lots to see, swimming round to Jack Spratts for a beer was good fun we loved this place.............we may be back. Thank you
My roommate and I travelled here for Thanksgiving break and cannot begin to say how brilliant it is. From the friendly atmosphere to the fantastic cocktails (Dirty Banana!!), this is a must stay in Jamaica. Couldn't recommend it enough!!
Oh my, this place is incredible! I wish it was closer as I'd be back every couple of months. Well priced rooms, the two bed cottage we had was huge and well furnished with enough quirk that it felt like home. Food was yummy, especially at Jack Sprats. Cocktails I couldn't get enough of and so well priced you can have as many as you want. Great location and a lovely community. But best of all, the Jakes team can't do enough for you!! They look after you as they would your family. If you're going to Jamaica, you have to stay here, absolutely fantastic!
