The St. James Hotel wasn't cheap, but considering it was Mardi Gras, it was worth it. The location is great for parades and access to the FQ. The staff were very helpful and, even though it was their busiest time of the year, made everyone feel at home. The rooms were spacious and clean, the beds firm, and the air-conditioning worked well. No real complaints.

We had a great time at the St. James. The staff are friendly and very helpful. The hotel is gorgeously decorated with impressionist art and has good jazz playing. They have nice touches like bringing coffee and homemade croissants to your room. It has an elegant New Orleans feel and so we were also surprised to find it so affordable. Highly recommend.

An old hotel that fits with the theme of the tourist (old French) neighborhood. Though it is located on the outskirts of the French Quarter, it's definitely walk-able. The staff are atypically friendly and helpful. We didn't find our rooms small, as some other guests have commented before. If anything, the ceilings are high and the room definitely had the fresh and airy feel to it. We had huge windows overseeing the backyard with the pool and some seating. The room service for breakfast was quite nice, although it would be great to have breakfast on a whim, rather than at a set time (even though you may choose the time window for delivery). The hotel rooms are nearly not as noisy as some that I have seen before, so you will likely get a restful night after all the partying you have had on Bourbon street. Other areas of the hotel are just an eye candy, the halls speak of its history and boast the decor from the bygone era.

We stayed at this hotel for Jazz Fest and really enjoyed its proximity to bars and restaurants.

Even though it was in the middle of a re-model, it was incredibly comfortable and the greatest staff. My hat is off to this hotel and I will stay there again most definitely

The room was very nice for the price. The decor in the lobby felt really warm and comfortable. Everything was kept in order and the staff was very helpful. I wouldn't mind staying here again.

The room was small. Air conditioner didn't work. It was 85+ degrees in our room. No ceiling fan. Front desk said that they would bring us a box fan for the inconvenience, which was never brought up. The windows didn't open at all. Then they had the nerve to call my room at 1am, telling us to keep it down, right after I got off the phone with them about the heat issue. The pool looked like nothing more than a filthy green swamp, where everyone went to go smoke. The location is decent, but after walking the main strip, we found PLENTY of nicer places for even less money. DO NOT GO HERE!!!!

Honestly, my experience here was good - it's close enough to the festivities of Mardi Gras, but away from some of the more crowded areas. Room was nice, even if I could hear every word from the hallway (it's NOLA - I don't expect complete peace and quiet). If you're driving your own car, though, I'd recommend parking yourself the valet takes 20-30 minutes to retrieve your car, and the actual valet rate may come in higher than they quote you if there's an event. It's not much money, but even a few bucks feels dirty when the staff has already told you a different number.

This is a great little hotel. clost to the Quarter, but away from the congestion and noise. the hotel has retained the Old New Oleans charm but been updated with beautiful style. Not the least of the charm is that they deliver a free continental breakfast right to your door each morning. And if you are around for more than one night you have the advantave of a microwave and fridge in your room. The only drawback might be the lack of a fitness room---I did not see one, though I did not look very hard!

Very friendly staff, large room, clean bathroom and great cup of coffee with their complimentary continental breakfast

The hotel staff was excellent and very friendly! The location was great; walking distance to Canal St. and Bourbon St. Had a great time at Mardi Gras 2014 and would definitely stay there again!

Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable and quiet. Hotel experience helped give us a very good overall experience while visiting New Orleans. We are already making plans to return.

I travel quite a bit, and like smaller, boutique hotels. I found the St. James location to be perfect, just the other side of Canal from the French Quarter, in the CBD. From the moment I walked into the hotel lobby, I was impressed with the decor and the friendliness of the staff. My room, although small, was perfect, although I have to admit that the height of the windows threw me off - almost 5 feet from the ground, but still provided enough light. The amenities were comfortable, and the shower pressure and water temp were great. The hotel was quiet, and I never heard a bit of ambient noise from the other rooms. Christine and the other ladies at the front desk were always there to greet you with a smile and take care of my every need, from calling a cab to giving me walking directions and street car information to recommending a great restaurant for breakfast or dinner. I would not hesitate to recommend the St. James to family and friends, and plan to make this lovely hotel my "go to" when in New Orleans.

Friendly staff. Bathroom needs a deep clean. AC wasn't working properly

friendly, small but clean, historic atmosphere, close to quarter (easy 2 block walk)

There were rats in the courtyard while I was sitting out there. We had no coffee cups or decaf coffee our 4th morning. There was an error on our bill that the desk person could not fix. Had to call my credit card company who contacted the hotel manager to have the bill corrected. The hotel staff was very friendly and got me extra clothes hangers when I asked for them. Coffee and water in the lobby was nice. The beds were very comfortable!

My stay was quite comfortable, but the carpet had a large dark red stain in the middle of the floor that was somewhat disturbing. I put a towel over it each day I was there so I wouldn't feel like I was staying in a crime scene. However, the front desk staff were nice and the location was perfect.

The staff were friendly enough but this hotel offers very little in the way of amenities. There is not a crumb of food available on premises - not even a vending machine. I was unprepared for the rain we had one day and asked if there was an umbrella I could borrow, no (not holding it against them just saying don't expect much in the way of services). The room was kept nice and clean and the bed was very comfortable. The curtains shut fully at night and I was able to get a really good night's sleep each night. The decor is a little dated. The nightstands and furniture a little bit dingy and older but not the worst I have seen. The location was very good and convenient to everything I need to do while there for a conference.

The hotel was in a great spot downtown, very near the french quarter making walking back and forth several times a day easy. Our room was nice, a little dark, but no big deal because we really went to New Orleans to see New Orleans and not hangout in our hotel room. With that said, however, each day after walking or biking around till 5 or so, we headed back to the hotel for a few drinks (we made ourselves with supplies picked up from the corner store) in the hotel's outside area and chatted with another couple staying at the hotel, and it was very pleasant. The real shiner was Rebecca, the front desk attendant that greeted us the day we arrived, and whom we saw everyday when we came back. Rebecca was super helpful, funny, and great spirited making our initial encounter with someone from New Orleans very memorable. Hats off to her!

Nice location and convient to almost all city activities.
