The room was not as requested at time of booking. Whilst I know room requests are subject to availability, when I enquired I was told the hotel was full and a room change was not possible. However, I subsequently heard a conversation where a man was saying how noisy the hotel was and had been offered a room change. I was clearly lied to! On the subject of noise, at around 5pm I was in my room and thought a nightclub had opened nearby. It turned out to be the people in the next room playing music loudly with heavy bass. I had to knock on the door to ask them to turn it down. It genuinely felt like a nearby nightclub. In addition there were constant bangs and other noises. It sounded like there was a metal grill underneath our room, constantly scraping open and closed. Thuds seemed to come from underneath and above us. That night, at around 11:30pm there was the sound of people returning to the room next door and then, loud laughing, talking etc clearly heard through the wall. I banged on the wall and it quietened down temporarily. However it soon started up again and meant I did not get to sleep until around 2am, despite using earplugs. The walls seem incredibly thin. I should not be able to hear anything from other rooms or above and beneath me and yet this stay was characterised by noise all the time. I was subsequently told the hotel was previously an office block and had not been adequately soundproofed. I would never stay here again. Very disappointing stay.

I chose the hotel for the parking. Unfortunately the lift from the basement car park is broken (and has been for some time) and you have to use a call bell for help with luggage; there is no way to know if they have heard you. I waited for 15 minutes, I also tried phoning reception but it rang out with no reply. By the time someone arrived I was very upset after a long drive and being left for so long. The basement car park is dark and unpleasant, I felt very vulnerable. She said she had to deal with the queue at reception first, shrugged and did not apologise. Neither was she strong enough to lift my case up the stairs, another hotel client had to kindly help. The lift issue is a big problem - only one lift is functioning for the whole hotel, used by clients and staff. It is slow and crowded, stopping at every floor. The hotel itself is jaded and tatty, with poor maintenance and bodged decor. It really isn’t in good condition at all. Room cleaning is hit and miss - great some days, a few new milk pots thrown at the tray with nothing else done another. However when I contacted the manager about my check in experience he made every effort to speak to me to discuss it and apologise. He was very helpful and has arranged some compensation for my distress which he was able to see when he played back the CCTV. Advice for clients - drop your bag at reception *before* parking your car, and expect a wait for the lift at busy times of day.

Rooms and bathrooms were clean and spacious and the staff helpful and friendly. Unfortunately our stay was marred by two issues. The first, a very loud and abusive argument at 0100 to 0230 between the occupants of a neighbouring room was not the hotels fault and the reception staff attempted to deal with it the best they could. The second issue was that only one lift was working during the period of our stay and we frequently had to use the rather smelly, damp and dingy stairs. The lift from the car park was also out of service requiring us to carry our luggage up a poorly signposted concrete stairway. Only after we had done this was any assistance offered by the staff.
