Britannia Hotel Coventry3.0 out of 5.0

Just returned from a 4 day break with National Holidays staying at this hotel as a base. From the outside this hotel does look like some kind of 1960's architectural nightmare but once inside we were pleasantly surprised. The reception staff were always friendly and the atmosphere was always really nice. There are lifts to all floors ( 3 lifts but I only saw two in action but that was no big deal). Our room on the fourth floor was a twin room which was surprisingly large. The room was clean and neutrally decorated with all the usual tea/coffee/kettle facilities. I think what most surprised us was the food which was exceptional. A different roast every evening ( other choices were available). The roast beef on the first evening was melt in your mouth. The breakfast was unlimited with a great choice, all in all the best food I've ever had a a Britannia hotel. One the second day unfortunately my mother had a fall in the reception area, the duty manager Mark went out of his way to ensure my mother was ok, this was much appreciated. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to friends staying in Coventry in the future.
I stay in hotels often but have never been driven to give a negative review, I have the attitude that you get what you pay for in general and cheap hotels feel cheap, but that's ok... More expensive and you get better of course. But I can only describe this place as a miserable, filthy hole. I wouldn't pay any price, no matter how low to ever stay here again. It is filthy. I mean really, really filthy. There was dirt, dust, stains everywhere you looked in the room (and I wan't hunting for it). The room completely stank. The bathroom was genuinely at least 49 years old, and it showed with awful paint, peeling and dirty grout and sealant, taps that barely worked, broken shower head, did I mention the dirt? The rest of the room was no better, work out furniture with bits missing, scraped and scratched, but tat aside it was just really, really dirty in obvious and highly visual places. The bed was horrible and ancient, mattress worn out and the whole thing was on a slant downhill to one side too! Almost funny, but not quite... I know I must look like a miserable git who is just having a go but really I am not. I've stayed in some gritty places before, but this is a record breaker in all respects.
A great weekend stay my wife stayed with friends for a function, a lovely twin room with lots of room, clean and with everything we needed with hair dryer plenty of towels and free WiFi. A superb evening meal and entertainment, followed by unlimited breakfast in the morning. Well done to all staff Involved!! And thanks for a lovely stay.
I phoned yesterday afternoon to confirm our booking. The girl answered and I said would you like my booking reference. " Well what do you want" was her response, how about a better reply being " Well I will see if I can help without it" or " it's ok thanks how can I help" ! It's absolutely unreal that these people work in a customer service environment in which they are completely unsuitable for. I understand the Americans know all about delivering excellent service perhaps a week there might teach her a trick or two.
Spent 4 nights at the Britannia ,the breakfast and evening meals were excellent and as good as we have eaten anywhere. The rooms were basic but clean and the bed was very comfortable .and the staff were very helpful . Would stay here again if we were in the area.
Firstly, no complaints with the room BUT the break went down hill immediately after that. Settled in then wanted a snack. NO FOOD anywhere in the hotel from breakfast until evening meal at 7:30! We were offer a £20 around trip taxi to a fetch a lunch time snack but a large sign at reception banned any food or drink to be brought into the hotel!! I tried the vending machine in desperation for chocolate at lease. Vending machine BROKEN!! Relieved to be eating evening meal we were greeted at the dinning room door by a prison officer type woman, bullying and shouting at the top of her voice (absolutely disgusting) I was there for a holiday - NOT serving time!! Day two we were served a cold buffet at 3:30 pm as we were going to the theatre (inclusive of the holiday) There was no salad what-so-ever apart from two bowls of lettuce - no tomatoes, cucumber, beetroot etc to moisten the dry bland 'cold buffet'. Not even a little salad cream. The only liquid refreshment we were offered WATER. No desserts available but after a room full of very dissatisfied grumbles we were fetched ice cream from the kitchen. So from 3:30 Thursday afternoon we were to survive until 7:30 Friday morning. The sign on reception reminding us not to take food into the hotel. Oh the indoor swimming pool was freezing cold! I approached an official company to contact the hotel regarding these issues . The hotel ignored the company!!!
It was with some trepidation that I booked this room for a one night stay in Coventry City Centre , I was aware of the reputation and reviews however we found that room 437 was OK for the price £47 for 1 night . Yes the carpet was worn out in places , the grouting discoloured , the bath fittings tired but the sheets were clean and of acceptable quality , the room a good size , all surfaces clean and there was a kettle with ample supply of coffee tea and uht milk .The bath and sink were old but clean . Disturbingly the loo was slow to refill but there was a sign warning of this .The hotel has hardly even modernised since the 1970s and is showing its age but for a bed for the night it is fine .
We checked in on 26th August in the evening after visiting a friend in Rugby. When we arrived we were first given a twin room which we didn't ask for as we were a couple we expected a double bed. However went down to reception where they gave us a double room. On arrival to the room the hotel was noticeable very dated and the rooms were just as bad. Our so called double bed was no bigger than a single bed. I checked the room over and just didn't feel comfortable the standard was off putting. The pillows were stained with yellow marks and seemed really old with no pillow protectors on which made my skin crawl. I sat on the bed wandering what to do but thought I'd given it the benefit of the doubt. I got into bed and the bed was like a slab of concrete plus the noise coming from surrounding rooms was just horrendous. I quickly got dressed went to reception and checked out I physically couldn't stay there no more. The receptionist Lance was polite about the situation I also explained I was healthy pregnant and just didn't feel the hotel was up to scratch. Lance gave me details on how to get a refund which I will be sorting out. I just felt like this hotel was used for people with one nightstands and for people who didn't give a damn where they slept for the night. I however like a nice good clean hotel with a decent nights sleep. I literally wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone I honestly thought it was terrible.
Stayed here for one night as part of a coach tour and thank god it was only for one night. The outside is awful and it's a real eyesore on what I found to be a lovely city. The lobby looks real nice but that's probably the only nice area really, once you get off the elevator your greeted with old stained carpets and once you get in the rooms it only gets worse. The rooms look like they probably looked great in the 70s but hasn't been updated or cleaned much since. The pluming in the hotel is seriously bad, the loo in our room wouldn't flush properly and taking a shower was a nightmare. One girl on our trip was burned due to the shower, it can suddenly go from freezing cold to scalding hot in seconds. The beds are hard and the sheets are old and cheap, the noise from the traffic outside makes sleep impossible. The breakfast wasn't too bad but the dining room was dated and the chairs in some disrepair. Thank god it was only one night and we didn't get hurt from staying there but I really couldn't recommend anyone staying there.
A 50/50 hotel in my opinion. The Bad......the room was below par, with a large stain on the carpet, a very small shower meaning the curtain was sticking to us as we showered, and given a twin when we booked as a couple. The Good..... The downstairs was nice and plush, the breakfast area was very pleasant, and the buffet breakfast was pretty good. Liked the style and look of the downstairs but the rooms let it down big time.
