Macdonald Swan's Nest Hotel

Just stayed for two nights. Having read some of the latest reviews we were wondering if we should have booked somewhere else, however, we haven’t experienced any of the negative aspects some have mentioned. Yes, the hotel is undergoing a refurbishment but it has to be done at some point! Our room 103 was very warm and a decent size. Check in was friendly and efficient. The breakfast in the Bistro was more than adequate With friendly staff. Would use again as location is ideal for Stratford centre.

Although the Swan's Nest had lots of good features, overall we were disappointed - and many of the good features seemed to come with a downside. Still, the best thing about the hotel is its location - just over the river from the centre of Stratford - about 10 minutes from the shops and restaurants and less than that from the RSC (so ideal for plays there). Our room, 63, was at the front of the hotel with nice views over the river but was very small - maybe 13 feet by 8. Given that about a third of that was taken up by the bed, this left very little space for anything else. The room was also very cold - for part of our stay the heating packed up throughout the hotel, but even when this was fixed, the heating in our room was very hit and miss. The bathroom was a good size but the hot water was never properly hot - just about adequate but you shouldn't really be hitting the maximum temperature and still trying to turn the heat up. In addition, the room is right over the bistrot and the piped music came on at 8am each morning and could be distinctly hear in the room. There is a nice pool available but it is over the road in the sister hotel - about a 7 minute walk away, so not to be done in a towel (well, not in January!). Apart from the location, the best bit of the hotel is the bar, the Bear, which has real fires and a good atmosphere. It was very busy during the televised rugby match, when all the tables had been pre-booked. Next door in the bistrot is where breakfast is served - not a bad full English but very small (one of those places that gives you baked beans in a tiny ramekin). The staff were pleasant and helpful throughout. Overall, not disastrous and the location forgives a lot, but I won't be rushing back.

An average experience, but with below average qualities because of noise and paint odours from the refurbishment going on. Bed was comfortable and staff pleasant. Rather expensive to stay, given we had no extras. Room service sandwiches were avoided because of the high price and ordinariness.

Really surprised to stay in such a nice hotel and find the shower incapable of producing hot water! Great location by the river opposite the Theatre, clean well furnished room and a really pleasant freshly cooked breakfast. Receptionist telling us the shower was cold because other guests might have been having a shower at the same time does not really wash! Our welcome on arrival was probably the worst I have ever experienced - interrupted mid-sentence to be told to go away and come back at 2.30. Surprised as have previously associated Macdonald Hotels with good customer service.

We usually stay at the Swans Nest when we visit Stratford and are rarely disappointed. The parking is free and very convenient for visiting the theatre, shops and is almost in the river. Last time we stayed we commented that the hotel needed refurbishment and that we probably would not stay there again. However, there was a very good deal on the room at this time of year, so we booked again. Glad we did - they are carrying put a huge refurbishment programme. We like it beca Use of The a Bear pub on site, where the drinks are not overpriced and the Bistro Pierre on-site is excellent for both breakfast and dinner.

A pleasant stay although refurbishment meant the corridors and staircases were dusty and no carpets! The room was nice and very clean with a pleasant view. Quality of food in the bar and breakfast restaurant was very good. Would stay there again.

We really had a lovely time. Over the years we have stayed here many times. The staff are very attentive and always make us feel welcome and nothing is too much trouble. Lovely rooms with comfy beds. The food is some of the best in Stratford. Avery good location for the town.

The hotel was undergoing major refurbishment work. We were not advised of this until we commented on the dirty, worn communal areas. There was no hot water in the shower and cobwebs in the room. We received no apology when we commented on these issues. Nowhere near the 4* rating more like a 2*

The hotel is very conveniently situated for the town, the theatre, and wonderful walks along the river. The staff extremely helpful and friendly. Once the refurbishment is completed a hotel to revisit time and again.

It was good to get a January “special” but disappointed to realise that this may have been only because the hotel is undergoing refurbishment- which does affect the stay. Good location. The room was reasonable - the bed was comfortable for sleeping. In the room a bulb in the standard lamp did not work and could only be sorted after our departure. There were stains on the bedspread. The room safe did not work ( as is the case with a number of other rooms we gathered on departure. The pub/bar closes at 11pm and does not serve hotel guests after that time. Night service will sell bottles- white wine at £22.50 a bottle or a Peroni Beer at £4.65 a small bottle! Breakfast in Bistrot Pierre was very good. No interest in the quality of our stay on departure. Some surprising and disappointing features from a MacDonald Hotel.
