We stayed for one night on 5th May. We stay in Sheffield every couple of months as my son swims at competition at Ponds Forge and we usually use the Mercure. We have stayed once before in the Novotel and didn't have a great experience, but as the Mercure was full, we thought we would give the Novotel another go. We had a great welcome from Esther who was really friendly and efficient. We had an executive room for three of us and it was clean, comfortable and pleasant and well supplied with toiletries. The problem is that despite the misleading control box on the wall of the room, there is no air-con. On a blistering day - and with three of us in the room - this was a real concern. After we raised the issue, Esther arranged for us to be provided with a fan and we could open the window a little bit, but since the room faced a busy road, this meant we had a very disturbed night with trafffic noise and revellers into the early hours. Since we had specifically requested a quiet room so my son could get a good night's sleep while he was competing, this was really disappointing. Breakfast was also disappointing. Breakfast starts at 7am, but we asked if we could have an early breakfast as our son had to leave for the pool at 7.10am. On our previous stay, this has been arranged and although the full cooked breakfast was not available, we were able to get juice, toast and pastries and were given tea and coffee, helped by a kind waitress who got together what she could. Esther checked and confirmed that it would be OK, but when we went down the next morning, it was clear that the message had not got through. The member of staff who was putting the food out, told us that they were not open and when we explained that it had been arranged, simply continued with putting out the food. She didn't offer us tea or coffee and she made no effort to help us out - we had to ask for juice and toast (she did put some extra bread out when we asked for toast and did go into the kitchen to ask if they could do us some eggs) but we were basically left to forage for what we could find as she put it out. While we were there, we had two passing members of staff, including a cleaner, shouting at us that the restaurant was not open. We were eventually offered tea and coffee at 7.10 just as we were about to leave. After a disturbed night - and having made special arrangements - we were pretty unimpressed. This is a nice enough hotel, but - despite that fact that their literature says they can change restauarant arrangements on request - the truth is that they don't so the cost of breakfast was wasted for us. They should also be honest on their adverts and make it clear that there is no air-con so that people would know to avoid this hotel in the summer time. As we checked out, there was another guest complaining about the heat in his room. The staff apologise but there's nothing much they can do about it. Acccor hotels need to sort it out and put air-con in quickly.
Booked for a Sunday night so we could attend a concert at Sheffield City Hall. Hotel was modern, clean and comfortable. The location was fantastic, such that you can walk out the back door and you are right in the middle of the shopping district. Staff were really helpful. The bar is open late on a Sunday, which was useful as we were able to get a drink and a meal at 10.30pm after our concert - all other surrounding restaraunts took last meal orders at about 9pm. Would definitely stay here again if I am ever in Sheffield.
We stayed at the Novotel Sheffield for 1 night and the room we were given was not to a very good standard. The toilet is separate to the bathroom and is like a public toilet and it had a hole the size of a golf ball in the wall with toilet paper stuffed in it. No one should be given a room like that and as we got there at 6pm and rushed straight out, we didn't use the toilet until 11pm and would have asked to change rooms had it not been so late but it shouldn't be like that in the first place. The air con did not work, the bed was hard, the pillow was hard and cracked tiles on floor in bathroom. I did not get a good nights sleep. When the receptionist asked if we had enjoyed our stay i pointed out the hole in the wall and told her that no one should be given a room like that but she did not really say much at all. The bar service was excellent though.
I stayed here on Sunday as a last minute get away with the girlfriend, and overall i was very happy with the choice, i wasnt sure what i was expecting. However everything was modern and matched, reception staff were very pleasant and smiley, and overall a good feeling withing the hotel. The only criticism would be that i couldnt see any signage pointing towards reception on the ground level by the pool, which is where the taxi dropped me off. But overall I look forward to earning points with you guys and making more visits.
The hotel is a central spot which we booked being so close to the O2 academy. The hotel has a car park which is limited in spaces but plenty of other options around you if it’s full. We took swimmers but decided not to use the pool - it’s very small. Room was basic, but what you needed. The extra bed was not made in the room but a quick call to reception it was sorted within 15 minutes so not too bothered about that. Our room was the winter garden side of the hotel, not noisy outside at all. We had a meal in the bar before going out, this was ok. It was about 645pm and one of the specials was already off the menu. Lots of other choice though. The breakfast was good, lots of choice which satisfied all 3 of us. Would maybe stay again but not for more than a night.
Stayed here with my 8 year old son for the snooker Amazing location, totally perfect Lovely hotel, unbelievably helpful staff. Great room. Even the beer was cheap! Lovely swimming pool, also various games for my son to play which he loved Very highly recommended
Well... what can I say about Novotel. Quite a lot actually. Just been unfortunate enough to spend 5 weeks here. Left last week but only just recovered from the trauma of a ‘superior’ room to write a review. Superior to what we haven’t yet discovered - certainly not any other hotel we have ever stayed in (including 2/3 star). Not sure who declared this a 4 star hotel but I suspect they are not still employed in this capacity due to blatant lies. So let’s start with the positives! The food was great and the cleaners, breakfast and bar staff are really friendly. Omelettes and poached eggs were really great. Bar food also nice, good value especially the children’s menu (3 courses and a drink for £5). Jamie on reception is amazing! He actually made the stay much much better. Has he have not been there with his exceptional customer service skills we would have contacted our insurance company and moved after week one. It’s thanks to him that you got an additional 4 weeks worth of money. Thankfully not ours, we’d rather have stayed in a hostel. Sooooo what did you get wrong? We had 3 rooms during the 5 weeks, our last room (405 for reference) was disgusting, how you can charge what you do is unbelievable! You can’t open the window as all you can hear is a generator. There was a screw sticking out of the wall in the bathroom and it’s the smallest most stifling room we have ever stayed in. The bar was also so badly stocked! Hardly any drinks available in the week or the weekend. The stairs are such a terrible condition with the carpet sticking out, a huge tripping hazard - don’t be suprised when people fall and put a claim in! The evacuation point sign on floor 4 doesn’t advise where to go.... our 7 year old asked why it was blank. If she gets it at 7 why don’t you? The absolute worst thing about this hotel are the reception staff. The majority of them need an intensive customer service course. They were rude, unhelpful and acted as though everything was too much trouble. Apart from one girl who ran to put lippy on when a group of lads checked in - she was all smiles then which shocked us as we hadn’t seen her smile before. The hotel is advertised as child friendly but aside from Jamie and a few other staff.... they do not know how to talk to engage with children! Clipped and stilted tones and no smiles at all! The TV in every room we stayed in had little to no reception and the fridge was brilliant if you like your fridges to act as a toaster. Things come out warmer than they go in. Oh and if you’re bigger than a size 12, don’t expect the towels to go round you! The pool towels are huge, room towels are a ridiculous size! The parking charges are high but it’s City Centre so not massively unreasonable, but we were asked to pay in advance.... fair enough but you have minimal spaces and can’t guarantee we’ll get parked and a number of spaces were blocked or not in use. What a ridiculous system you operate. I’d pay in advance if I could guarantee to get parked. We used Q-Park after the first few weeks as they do something novel.... you park and then pay! Amazing concept!
ROOM 231 Everything was faultless baring 2 things, unfortunately really the biggest 2 things. Room temperature was very warm, look on your own website says air con, however there is either no air con in the rooms or it plainly wasn't working. When I arrived it was close to mid 20's c being the warmest few days in April. The Bed. This has to be the most uncomfortable bed in such a standard of hotel I've been in. It is so firm, yes there is a little padding on top but by 5.30am and being in bed since about midnight I had only cat napped a little as I couldn't sleep on my back and it was uncomfortable on my side and had to keep turning. Luckily I remember the sofa's are a bed as well. For your information the mattress on the sofa bed is getting tired as at one side the springs can be felt but this was so much more comfortable than the main bed. Saying all this I have stayed with Novotel before, Leeds, Manchester and twice in Sheffield and although not for a few years the quality of sleep for your standard prices is unbelievable as budget hotels premier inn and travelogue mattresses are streets ahead Needless to say Novotel will not be an option when I am looking at hotels again.
Some positives- Check in was efficient, although we arrived a little early, so our room wasn't ready yet. Parking is on site, we luckily got a spot outside the door. It is quite expensive (£13.50 for an overnight stay). We went to the bar for a drink while we waited for our room to be ready. Despite there was only one other customer waiting, with two people behind the bar, we waited for almost ten minutes to be served. The one barman was serving a customer, but the female member of staff (who I assume to be the manager as she was ordering the barman around a lot) ignored us completely and continued filling and refilling a water jug into a sink. Terrible basic customer service. We had booked an "executive room" - and the room we got (Room 333) didn't really live up to the name. The "toilet room" was small and cramped, and the sink was in a separate room! Not very hygienic. The queen bed wasn't particularly comfortable and the sheets were very thin, as were the sheets on the sofabed. The décor was drab and tired, as were the menus and other documentation in the room. All in all, not very "executive" at all. However, the "rain" shower was powerful and refreshing, but the shower door and bath were leaking. Breakfast was fine, good selection of food. The staff that we encountered with the exception of the lady who checked us in, and the lady who checked us out, were largely sullen and gave off an air of unapproachability, almost as if we, the guests, were an interruption. For the price (£207 including parking for one room, one night) this was not value for money, but the location is good as its right in the centre of Sheffield.
On arrival lift to reception was out of service so we had to call hotel to get someone to collect our luggage. As Accor members check in should have been easy! It wasn’t. Room smelt of smoke so we had to be moved. Lots in room wasn’t working and it all was very tired. We had trouble parking car as there was no room. We were told we would have to park down the road. However a Bentley arrived with a personal number and it parked in Disabled but had no badge and didn’t look as he had one either!!! A member of staff moved their car so did manage to use car park .Breakfast was good. Again lift still not working on departure. Staff had to be called to carry bags down! Car park exit blocked by delivery- inconvenient but understandable. Had to get entrance barrier raised - again not easy! We had come from Novotel York where everything was superb so this was a real let down and wouldn’t go back.
