Mercure Sheffield St Paul's Hotel and Spa4.0 out of 5.0

Our party had booked the theatre in Sheffield for Friday night and Saturday afternoon and rather than trudge back to the suburbs and return the next day, we took up an offer that came through last October. It was an inspired decision. From our arrival to our departure, we received first class service. Being upgraded was an added bonus that underscored the benefits of joining a loyalty program. Even without a special deal, we will be returning here next time we have two shows to see on consecutive days. Its location is perfect.
Hotel was clean and tidy. However throughout the night the noise was absolelty ridiculous! It stopped for a while and carried on at 8:30 people shouting, slamming doors stamping up the corridor. I phone and complained to reception however the noise got worse. Nothing as done about it. When checking out we where told they " they did speak to them". Basically, if you want a good night sleep dont stay here. My sleep was broken due to the noise throughout the night and in the morning.
Enjoying a wonderful 2 night stay in a fantastic room with great views over city. Food has been excellent plus if you are a gin lover you will love the selection here with equally great choice of tonics to complement. Everyone we met was so helpful and friendly- will definitely return.
We had a wonderful stay at the hotel and spa and we were really looking forward to booking again... however... on the way home the following day we recieved a call stating that we had been smoking in the room and that were going to be billed for the room to be deep cleaned. This was definately not the case, nobody had smoked in the hotel room. My partner does however smoke sometimes and he did go outside to the front of the building on many occasions at different times during the day and night, which the hotel would see on CCTV if they conducted a fair investigation! My partner does live with his parents in a smoky environment and his holdall had the smell of old smoke but this was no way strong enough for the hotel to accuse us of lighting a cigarette and smoking in the bedroom or to charge us so much money to deep clean the floor, mattress and curtains etc! I stated that there must be other visitors who use the hotel that smoke outside or live in a smoky environment and the person on the telephone told me it is a 4* hotel and they do not expect that.. RUDE! The room had no window and therefore if a cigarette was lit in the room, it would of smelled so strong and most probably set off the smoke alarm. I myself do not smoke and would never allow my partner or anybody else I may stay with to smoke around me or indeed where I am sleeping! Very disappointed at how this accusation was handled and unfortunately I would not recommend this hotel because of this, especially if you smoke or live in a smoke filled environment whether this is by choice or not! You may get fined too!
Another enjoyable stay at the Mercure upgraded to a privilege room, like the new bathrobes really soft and comfy not like the old ones felt like wearing sandpaper. Nice cosy bar, good service, breakfast good will be back as soon.
Wow! What a deal we got, 8 of us £120 each, bed, breakfast, three course evening meal, access to the spa & a treatment! The hotel is central & close to everything you may need. Just a short walk from the train station. It’s very clean & ‘posh’ the spa is lovely with 4 experience rooms & the girls doing the massage were very professional & made us feel at ease. The evening meal was beautiful & left us all feeling very satisfied. I didn’t have breakfast but all my friends did & said it was lovely. Will Definitely return, thankyou St. Paul’s Mercure we had a wonderful time
Lovely hotel, rooms clean, brilliant bathrooms, staff professional but very friendly. Receptionist remembered me from a previous stay. Had a lovely breakfast BUT can't believe that a hotel in England ran out of marmalade, Paddington would be very disappointed.
I booked the mercure hotel as my daughter was attending an open day at the nearby Sheffield Hallam University. I had signed up previously to the mercure website and was lucky to book the hotel through a secret sale deal and get 30% off. It’s in a great location in the St. Paul’s area of town near to The Crucible theatre and the winter gardens. Opposite are pizza express, cafe rouge and picollinos. The hotel is lovely and the staff are very friendly but efficient. My only negative is that our room 404 was directly opposite the lift and I was woken up several times with people coming in at all hours as well as by the noise of the lift itself. Breakfast was good in the lovely light and airy restaurant and offered everything you could want. The hotel doesn’t have parking but offers valet parking at £30. I think this is very expensive. We parked in the nearby NCP Arundel Gate ( S1 2PN) which is literally a 3/4 minute walk. It’s a bit of a dated car park but there were plenty of spaces even on a Saturday afternoon. Ask for a discount ticket at reception. It cost £9 for 24 hours instead of £22 so well worth it. I would definitely return to the hotel if I was visiting the area again.
The hotel it's self if beautiful, the rooms are lovely and the shower was amazing! However, the highlight of my visit was the interaction and genuine care from the night receptionist- I believe his name is Darren (sorry if I have the wrong as in terrible with names) he couldn't do enough for us - and people like him are what make places like this 5 star!
Visited last night for my hen do, reception staff were lovely congratulating me, making me and my friends and family feel special and welcomed and the good service continued into the spa were the poolside was relaxing and we all had treatments that were fantastic! However from here it went down hill, having a table booked in the restaurant for 7:30 we got seated straight away however then just got left nobody even gave us a menu or told us they would be back for a drinks order just showed us our table and walked away, we then waited around 20 minutes before having to ask someone to take our drinks orders this then took another 15 minutes to arrive. Food then another long wait to come and when asked how long the food would be we received a rude reply of 'everybody is waiting' rather finding out for us, considering we had an 8 month pregnant woman with us too, the waiting time was ridiculous all in all we were almost waiting 3 hours for our food (which parts of were cold) however dread to think how long it would have been if we did not complain. After our food the bill then took forever to come! With the staff even seeing us finished as they looked over many of times not once approaching and asking if we were ready for the bill, this then took us to complain once again to the manager. The manager at first seemed lovely congratulated me and provided us with a free bottle of champagne for our trouble as she tried to resolve the issue, we were offered free drinks to which we asked for soft drinks due to not wanting a heavy night of drinking especially since one of the party was heavily pregnant. However this then turned very quickly as the manger implied we were lying about the times of the food and constantly repeating that they have very good video footage that they will check, she then told us 3 hours is a normal wait time for food even though the restaurant wasn't busy and then further implied that it was not an issue as we had no other plans booked! I found this incredibly rude and even though we did not have anything booked I did not want to spend 3 hours waiting for food and receiving bad service for my hen! The manager then brought the waitress over who had been rude previous and asked us to speak to her which I found extremely odd and humiliating not just for us but for the girl too as I believed in a professional environment that should of been handled privately. The worst part was when offered a free bottle of champagne to be taken to our room which we politely declined after explaining we were not really wanting alcohol and the soft drinks would be fine she then walked away shaking her head leaving me still very unsettled about the whole incident and ruined a large part of a very special night which was a shame as the rest of the day was lovely and all the other members of staff were so helpful. Would not recommend here for a special occasion as I am completely deflated.
