Grand Harbour Hotel

The Grand was ideally placed for our trip to Southampton and had many excellent features. We had to wait to book in but were pleased to hear that we had been upgraded. The room was large and well appointed but surprisingly had no drinks bar. We went to the main bar for drinks only to find that there was no draught beer available. The pumps were all there and lit up but obviously someone had decided that draught beer was off for the evening. We anticipated being served at the table but eventually realised that we had to collect our own drinks from the bar. We decided to take the drinks back to our room and noticed other people doing this. Staff around the hotel and the restaurant appeared to be off-hand and rarely smiled. The exception was the concierge who was excellent and extremely helpful. We shall be staying in Southampton again before too long but not at the Grand.

I stayed here with my partner from Friday to Sunday. On arrival the hotel looks lovely and the room was clean & tidy. The bed was very hard! we had to request a second duvet on Saturday morning to soften the mattress up so be warned if you prefer a soft bed. The pool was OK, in need of some decoration but functional. We didn't use the bar or restaurant as it right next door to a huge shopping & entertainment center with loads of restaurants. The location is walking distance to the ferry terminals and we went to the IOW on Saturday using the Red Jet service that is a 5 min walk from hotel reception. On Sunday morning the invoice was pushed through our door and and as we had pre paid we weren't expecting a balance but were surprised to see a £20 outstanding balance for parking charged at £10 a day. This parking charge is not mentioned anywhere when booking this hotel - it merely says parking is available. We were going to complain at checkout but were confronted with a queue of angry customers all complaining about the parking one by one. We heard the same thing over and over "that's the charge and that's what you have to pay". If the hotel management read this please let people know about the parking charge at check in & maybe even put it on your website. I wouldn't have minded IF I had been informed about it. Its really not a good idea letting a parking charge that is referred to as a "scam" in other reviews taint what is actually a nice hotel.

The hotel is well-located, within easy walking distance of the shopping area, bars and restaurants. There was plenty of space in the car park at the weekend. Our room was spacious, spotlessly clean and had a great view of the city and Solent. The staff were friendly and organised. Highly recommended.

Large clean room - well furnished and comfortable. Balcony in the room. Basic coffee and tea making. No mini bar. Safe in the room. Staff is friendly but will not go beyond the standard treatment of guests.

Needed a get away for one night. Used the Grand Harbour before due to the convenience and good standard. Still has that good standard and spa facilities so more than happy to recommend. Got a last minute deal as well so the price made the getaway even better. Staff are always friendly and the place is always clean. Usefully located to the centre of Southampton as well.

After reading many poor reviews I was not anticipating the best - I was wrong. Booked a long time in advance for cruise package: the results follow: Arrival reasonable, but only one person on check-in resulting in 15 minutes to clear this hurdle, but from then on things went swimmingly (bad phrase prior to boarding a ship). Concierge handled luggage and explained procedure for taxi next day. Room was good well furnished to a modern 4.5 star standard, very clean, comfortable with good bath room. No real view but only booked for standard. Restaurant for dinner (included in package) was good with wide choice and pleasant service. The same was true for breakfast - not so wide a choice, but all fresh and hot. Both transfers to ship went like clockwork with no more than 5 minutes wait outside cruise terminal with clear instructions given as well as updates by SMS. The hotel is just 10 minutes from West Quay Mall and is an excellent choice for a package that includes car parking.

We booked this hotel as we had a wedding across the road and it was the most convenient and were only in attendance for one night. I have read reviews over the years about this hotel and this is my take on it. Arrived at 6 to quickly check in and drop our bags before attending the wedding reception which went well ( although booked through a third party and was unaware of the parking charge) and left again to return at 11:30. Room was spacious and clean but the heating/ aircon was annoyingly noisy making a variety of awful sounds through the night so had to switch it off at 4am. Woken at 6:30 by lots of door slamming in the corridor but that could have been other guests. Eager to sample breakfast and see if the reviews around service were justified or not, we were greeted by a lady who wanted to know if we wanted a paper, umm. No, just breakfast please. The room was incredibly hot and uncomfortably sticky, my husband asked for water but was given a glass of ice. The food was average ( definitely not to the standard of the Solent hotel I was in the week before is same star rating in both quality and the variety of options available) The waiting staff continually interrupted people talking asking " "have you finished"? and even tried to take my plate while ai still had at least half a plate of food left!!!!! surely you never take plates from tables while other people are still eating, it just isn't done. We decided to try the leisure area for a swim and a jacuzzi, which had a huge hole in the ceiling, rust on the stairs and very scaled up areas around the jacuzzi not to mention lots of piles of sand/ grit in the bottom. To top if off I left the ring my husband gave me just two weeks before on the outer edge of the jacuzzi which I understand is my fault alone but when I rang back to ask for someone to check they said it wasn't by the jacuzzi but would ring me back by the end of the day when they had done end of the day sweep or in case someone handed it it. I was very emotional but was even more so when they did not ring me back. Overall good size rooms but air con needs addressing, the waiting staff need re training on dining etiquette, food quality and selection needs improving and some money spent on cleaning and repairs to the pool area. are a must. Oh and if you promise a customer you will contact them even if the news is not good then do so.

A lovely hotel with great service. Food was excellent. It's great here for a treat or to stop before getting on your cruise. It's also handy to the train station and the town centre. There is also a lovely walk through the old town right on your door step

Rooms are looking a bit worn and need some TLC - I noticed workmen refurbishing some rooms, which is good. Cooked and continental breakfast is buffet-style, a good range but nothing exceptional. Service at breakfast was very efficient and friendly. Unfortunately I did not realise that use of the pool and gym was included in the room price, as on the website it seemed to cost extra - I didn't bring my bathing costume as a result :( Just a note about the tea and coffee facilities in the rooms - surprisingly poor given the cost of the rooms. The only tea they provided was Tetley (yuck!) with no herbal teas whatsoever.

We were here for three nights for a short break over Easter. Everywhere clean and tidy and all staff very pleasant and accommodating. Our room was great with small balcony and very comfortable bed and great bathroom. However first impression not good as a fold up bed was made up and in front of the glass doors to the veranda. We had booked a double not family. That bed was easy to fold up and wheel to a corner of the room out of the way. But, it shouldn't have been there in the first place. The pool, sauna, gym etc were all good. The location was great, just a few minutes to the high street for many shops and restaurants. Other big malls and IKEA too. Fantastic Medieval buildings all around. I didn't expect that! Amazing.
