Had a one night stay when my daughter graduated from Reading university. Lovely huge bed with separate duvets. Well equipped shower room. Discount for parking at adjacent car park. Staff very helpful. Good choice of food for breakfast. Overall a pleasant stay.
The hotel is in a great location, if a tad noisy, the lobby is pleasant enough and the staff all seemed nice. Unfortunately, despite not having requested one, I was checked into a smoking room. I didn't realise smoking rooms existed in this day and age! I should have immediately complained but I didn't, so that's my fault, but after my night out (slightly worse for wear) I just wanted a nice sleep. The bed was comfortable, but the stench of stale cigarettes and smoke from the other rooms nearby really made the night quite unpleasant. Upon checkout I asked why I was given that room and told the guy how shocked I was that they even had them and to be fair, he did apologise profusely and give me a free coffee. Apparently I should not have been put in that room if I didn't request it explicitly. If I ever go back there they have promised to "make sure I have a nice room" next time and make it up to me.
This is a tough one to write so I'll do a scoring system with an explanation. Staff 10/10 - Your staff really make this hotel, if they weren't as helpful and polite as they are I'd definitely leave a worse review. Food 8/10 - Food was actually really decent and fairly price. Hotel Communal Areas - 8/10 - Quite nice to be honest, thought the bar, restaurant and reception area was really nice. Hotel Gym 8/10 - Not bad especially for a hotel gym. Room In General 4/10 - The decor was bogging and the TV didn't work very well. It was cleaned thoroughly but I don't know why this annoyed me but it did - There was a massive brown stain on the carpet and over the chair in the bedroom and rather than have it cleaned it was covered by a footstool. If the bed wasn't so comfy I'd have scored lower. WiFi 0/10 - Absolutely abysmal, even when you pay the small fee it's still terrible, I couldn't even check my email, ended up tethering my phone to do anything on my computer. It's 2017 SORT THE WIFI. I'd stay again purely on the food and staff but it wouldn't be my first choice.
the only thing that lets this hotel down is the motorway outside and the very old windows which let every passing lorry doing 60mph be heard. other than that there are no faults , the folks are pleasnt and food great.
One night stay with a business meeting on site. Not being able to check in until 3pm was a pain. Spent a couple of hours working in the lobby/lounge during the morning, but that wasn't great with the omnipresent music and low lighting for general work on screen or my teleconference. Actual room was nice but for the traffic noise which I attribute to the poor sealing of the windows. The audio/computer facility set up is a nice touch but more 13amp sockets are needed in this day and age. Compared with the meeting room provision with a centre table block of plugs and USB sockets the bedroom needs to be similarly appointed. Every hotel chain seems to make the same omission with the bathroom lacking grab handles and toilet brushes. So what if a couple of handles detract from the interior designers aspiration, one slip, fall or claim soon puts that into perspective and after all we're all getting older, infirm or losing our eyesight so it's a must from a inclusive perspective.
I was checked in by a perfectly nice receptionist but was astounded when I got out the lift and made my way through what was little short of a building site, and emergency lighting. An electrician I passed in the corridor asked which room I was heading for and advised me that although the lighting should work all other power in the room was currently off. I got into the room to find the furniture moved around to facilitate the works, and bits of lights on the bed. I was stunned that the electrician had been the only one to warn me about the state of the room. He was lovely and was clearly embarrassed that the hotel were sending guests to these rooms. I stopped by reception later in the evening and asked if they were aware of the state of the room they sent me to (which by this time the electricians had fixed and vacated). A lady who said she was the duty manager said the maintenance works had over run and basically blamed the electricians. She made no attempt at any apology. I expressed my astonishment that the hotel thought it appropriate to send guests to rooms in this state but she just didn't seem to get it and continued to blame the poor tradesmen. The fact that a duty manager considered this an adequate response just made the poor impression of service 100% worse. To say this service was poor doesn't quite do, it was unbelievable and in my opinion utter madness from a business point of view. I travel a great deal and have never experienced anything like this. For the avoidance of doubt, the electricians were fabulously polite and absolutely NOT the source of my dis-satisfaction.
Stayed here recently for a Xmas shopping trip. The rooms were lovely, but staff on reception left a lot to be desired. We were a coach of 52 and were to,d to queue at the desk, I queued for a little while to then be told, you are part of,the coach will have to,wai! Customer service skills were nil. The meal they provided was awful, but apparently they do not provide evening meals normally, but included in our visit. We were put in back of hotel told to eat between 7:30 and 9:30 I asked if could book a table and told no! We got to the room for food at 8:15 and all, food gone, had to,wait until they cooked chicken. One gentleman was marvellous but the others weren't interested. Must say thought, bar staff were wonderful, very personable and pleasant.
Excellent staff and the main reception very nice however the rooms are now in need of a refurb. I stayed in various rooms as travel for business and it is generally noisy so maybe the windows need resealing?my last 2 visits the shower has been extremely hot and the controls on cold so not sure what you can do. I would not allow a child to shower in such hot water. This was mentioned to reception on checkout. the restaurant food is limited in choice but very tasty and the breakfast is lovely.
The hotel goes out it way to be different, décor a bit whacky, low lighting, Christmas trees hanging from the ceiling , modern design etc What's good, staff, friendly, a tentative, can't fault them, food was fine, limited menu but nice what they do. room functional could do better - WIFI is just not fit for purpose, can't even download emails at anything faster than snail pace. For 2018 this just is not good enough, yes you can up grade but why. I'm on business I need wifi, upgrade it for everyone an add it on to the room cost . Lighting ok on the evening, I get what your trying to achieve but 8am on a Tuesday morning can't we have it a bit brighter so I can see my boiled egg?? The rooms can be nosey, I guess that down to location near a main road
I had a great time and I will definitely come back again cheers. I recommend everyone to stay at this hotel, couple or single this is the right hotel for you, is not expensive and is closer to shops..
