Booked for a spa break via secret escapes which meant that it was reasonable but not cheap and I would have been disappointed if I had paid full price. Some of the previous reviews have highlighted the hotel needs a bit of tlc which I would agree with but overall it is still pretty good. Our Deluxe room was a good size with a comfortable bed and large bathroom. Breakfast was good with continental selection and full English. The continental might disappoint our European visitors as no cheese or cold meats. Very good cooked breakfast with quality bacon 2 rashers, butchers sausage, slice of black pudding, choice of eggs, tomato and mushrooms. The scrambled and poached eggs were excellent. The fruit juices were a disappointment as all long life rather than fresh juice. The restaurant has a nice air about it with comfortable seating. I wouldn't advise sitting near the window in winter as single glazed window will be pretty cold as you cold already feel the cold radiating through. Dinner menu is fine dining and about £45 pp for 3 courses with only limited choice and presentation is better than taste. We had dinner one night down at the Inn at Freshford which is better value. Bar menu is fairly limited and if expanded would give alternative to main restaurant. Good spa area although small. The Sun loungers of which there are about 8 only two had cushions on which meant they are not comfortable. We tried in advance to book hot stone massages and were then told that they didn't have anyone qualified to to these so went for the full body massage. My wife's massage was very good but mine masseuse basically didn't have a clue and it was the worse massage I think I have ever had and certainly not worth £70. She did not seem to understand how to massage and just rubbed frantically with no real idea. The staff are all very helpful and will do there best to assist your needs overall I would say it is good but there is some room for improvement to get to very good.
We booked a Deluxe room for our one night stay and although the room its self was comfortable and large, like other reviewers we found some areas tired and worn. Grout was missing from the floor of our bathroom, the bathroom door did not latch or lock. We had just one hand towel and jar that should have had biscuits in it was empty, when we arrived, This was refilled when mentioned. We arrived for breakfast at 10, to find four couples having breakfast and all but three of the remaining tables needing to be cleared!!!!! The buffet table was all but empty. We requested orange juice, pastries and fruit cocktail, which did eventually come. The fruit cocktail had been prepared on a board used for onions and was inedible. The full english breakfast arrived as requested and consisted of one Sausage, one piece of bacon (not a whole piece), one Egg, half a tomatoes, five pieces of mushroom and half a slice of black pudding( which was dry and inedible. The whole collection arrived on a plate that made it look even smaller. We raised this when settling our bill and the cost of breakfast was removed from our bill. It does not change our overall experience and do not find it matched our expectations for a hotel of 4 Stars and price. It is one thing to welcome feed back, but it seems to be another matter to act on it. It would appear,much of our experiences have been felt by others. This is a nice and pleasant place. The room was spacious with a comfy bed. The grounds are nice, but like previous reviews highlight need touching up. I understand it is winter but for an alleged 'premium' hotel you should not be seeing weeds coming out of the paving in most places and a general scruffy look. The spa facilities are average at best. The steam room and sauna are ok, but the jacuzzi water is too cold and needs warming which meant it wasn't very enjoyable. The outside pool was freezing but again advertised as 'heated' (it certainly wasn't). The facilities are too small and if you are coming to just use these then you will be dissapointed as most gyms provide better and you will struggle to stay in here longer than 45minutes - 1 hour, also the lack of loungers is a big issue . My girlfriend asked for a massage...but this was on the day and they were fully booked (fair enough!) I found the staff polite enough but what really grated on my nerves were the additional costs and over inflated charges for just about everything. My girlfriend ordered a sandwich which came to £9 and we took one look at the dinner menu and booked elsewhere as the prices seemed rediculous. We were going to ask the front desk to ring us a taxi (something that mostly every hotel does free) but found out it was a £4 charge. When charges like this are added it comes across as a piss take , it was almost the same annoying experience as you get with flying with Ryanair! And some services should just be provided under general customer service, whilst other over inflated charges should be looked at. Overall an 'ok' stay..breakfast was good.....but left feeling that the money spent didn't justify the experience we had and with a few tweeks this place could be so much better.
Upon arrival the entrance was a distance away from the car park. This will be an issue for disabled guests as the path leading up to the hotel was rough and uneven. The lady on reception was pleasant but I found it hilarious when she offered to carry out bags being a very slight woman. Maybe there should be a porter offering to do this. My partner and I were twice the height of this woman so would have felt very stupid saying "Yes" to this request. The spa had young guests entering. Really it should be over 18. Not to be a bore but seeing young guests all over each other in the pool area is a bit off putting. The spa itself was lukewarm. Steam room and sauna excellent and very clean. After reading the welcome book some of the charges left us baffled. Charging for room service in a small hotel is a bit ridiculous. The flush on the toilet in room 1 needs looking at as it proved to be a bit of an issue. The view outside room one showed the dirty glass panels over the entrance that need cleaning. The grounds overall need a good tidy. It is letting the appearance of the site down. For top spec rates you would expect the grounds to be immaculate. Good points were - the bed was very comfy. Breakfast was good. Needs salt and pepper on the tables. We found it weird that there was no ketchup on offer? The night receptionist was very helpful when we found we had a flat tyre. Taxis into bath around £15. If you are not looking to dine at the hotel. The hotel menu put us off really as being very limited.
On arrival, our welcome was average. I’m not expecting a fanfare or a floor of roses but some customer care always goes down well after a long car drive. The hotel is cosy and tucked away, about 5-6 miles from Bath. The junior suite was clean and well sized. The beds are soft but spacious and comfortable. The continental breakfast was good, a great selection of dried fruits and yummy yoghurts. There are supplements if you move away from the cooked breakfast. The spa is nice, though the pool was advertised as 28 degrees, no way was that close to being warm! It’s not cheap at the bar but depends on what you order. All in all a pleasant few days to unwind. I’d recommend the hotel and spa. Plenty of smiley faces around who like to help where they can, its a pleasant stay with Bath in your sights.
My wife booked us a spa break for my birthday. The afternoon prior to us going they phoned to tell us that the treatments we had booked were not now available due to an error on their part. We had to cancel the break in toto. No apology or rewards were offered. Terrible experience.
Visited here for a champagne afternoon tea we had been given a red letter day voucher for. The restaurant was very accommodating when we phoned on advance and asked to bring the reservation forward by 30mins. The carpark is not the best and very uneven with a bit of a walk to the hotel. The staff upon entering to leaving were fantastic, the process of using the voucher was hassle free and all staff were very friendly and professional. The champagne afternoon tea was a delight, plenty of sandwiches, two large warm scones each and a platter of bitesize cakes accompanied by a pot2of fresh brewed tea, Very impressed with everything
We stayed in room 5 in October for our Wedding Anniversary. The hotel is lovely . The staff very attentive and our receptionist went above and beyond to make our stay perfect. The food was lovely and the outside pool was a joy to swim in. All in all a fab break . Mrs J Stephens
I stayed for a 1 night break with my wife and would seriously struggle to fault the place. We took advantage of the hotels ‘best offer of house’ option through their website and ended up with the Manuka garden suite (this is their top end room) for a very reasonable rate. The room had wonderful touches such as a plate of truffle and flapjack treats as well as a free standing bath and walk-in shower. The staff were all very attentive and made the whole experience very enjoyable. The only fault that I could possibly find was that the bathroom windows were not obscured and with the room being on the ground floor meant that all blinds needed to be shut to create privacy, leaving the room with no natural light. However when I brought this to the attention of the manager, he was keen to look into rectifying this. All in all an amazing hotel that I would highly recommend.
Great hotel to for convenience to Bath and Longleat Safari Park. Very comfortable manor house hotel with an excellent restaurant. The food was exceptional although a little expensive, and the staff were very helpful. We visited the spa which was nice although the treatments not as good as others we have had elsewhere. Not suitable if you are on a budget but great for a special occasion. We had a deluxe spa break but had to remind the staff of our free glass of champagne and the breakdown of the bill was not very clear but all in all a good short break. Will definitely visit the restaurant again if we stay in the area.
