Booked this hotel for a short weekend break for my wife’s birthday. I booked the Junior suite because the bedroom is separate to the living area which has a sofa bed. This was ideal as I’m a heavy snorer. I wasn’t aware that this suite was under construction. The night before our stay I received a call from the hotel to inform me that the room wasn’t ready. I explained the reason for booing that particular room. We were offered adjoining rooms and free parking. Upon arrival we were also offered a free room upgrade for our next visit and an apology. We found the rooms to be clean, modern and pleasant. The staff were helpful and welcoming. We will happily stay here again.

Excellent base for a weekend in York. Family room spacious with a double and two single beds. Popular with families. Great to have a pool for a dip. X box and Jenga for the children in the games room in the lobby. Staff friendly and helpful. Short walk to the city centre with all the main attractions and about half an hour from the train station. Would definitely recommend.

Arrived to be told that hotel restaurant closed for building works so breakfast/evening meals would be served in bar foyer area. If I’d been informed of this when booking direct with hotel I’d not have booked as break was to escape from building work being carried out by neighbour! I requested quiet room with nice view. Room allocated overlooked carpark (other side hotel overlooks river) & woke before 8am next morning to noise of builders noisily filling their skip, which was directly below room!! The ‘revised’ Breakfast area was very crammed & hot food was located in corridor to meeting room. No heated food lamps so food was generally only lukewarm. Not a great breakfast experience any of the three mornings there. We decided to go to pool 2nd day. Was bit shocked at facilities- or I should say lack of facilities! Extremely small area with few lockers, 2 individual changing cubicles & one glass walled shower. No privacy to have proper shower & difficult to get changed when more than 2 people about at same time! Provided this feedback when checking out - was offered £30 refund, maximum they could give (tho’ see in another review someone got 25%). Was told to email manager - I did within couple hours & 3 days later am still awaiting a reply!! Hotel is however in good location for city centre & rooms are good size (towels not best).

This hotel was in a great location being walking distance from the centre of town. The staff were friendly and helpful. It was a good buffet breakfast. The restaurant was OK but being so close to town I only ate once there. The room I had was great. Clean and comfortable. I would stay again.

We weren’t made aware after booking that the hotel was currently being renovated in some parts, particularly the dining room. I believe from 11th Feb to March. We were told quite sternly by Alberto on reception that breakfast would be in the lobby because of the works. I realised later that we could have still cancelled the room and gone elsewhere, but this wasn’t made clear to us on checking in. We weren’t informed either that this particular Novotel would charge £13 per day for parking. The barriers were up and our registration wasn’t taken, so what were we being charged for?! We talked to Jessica, who was very professional and lovely and we explained to her our views on this and she agreed to refund the parking to us. As I mentioned above, we didn’t get the choice to cancel our booking because of the renovation and Alberto promptly told us to “pay up”. I think this is rather odd considering our card was the gaurantee and we hadn’t yet experienced what we were paying for. Moving on to the room. We booked a queen with a sofa. Basically, the bed had been moved to the far end of the room, to fit a sofa! And we paid how much extra for this bed move?! The bed was uncomfortable and there was no mirror at the desk space to apply make-up. I had to move the desk chair to the tall stand up mirror and balance my make-up bag on my knee to get myself ready for the day. I wouldn’t usually complain about this, but just bear in mind how much we’d just handed over at reception. You can’t sell a room as a queen with sofa just because you push the bed over. Why was this obvious that this had happened? Because we had to sit at a right angle to watch the TV and well it all just looked rather odd. Just save money and book a normal double. Now the leisure facilities. The cleanliness here was shocking! Mud and muck all over the changing room and pool area floor, no over shoe protectors, overly full towel bin and grime and sand in the pool. Needless to say we took one dip and walked straight out as soon as we saw the grime. That was definitely the last straw! I think also that having two communal changing rooms and one communal shower is ridiculous for the amount of people in the hotel at any one time! I hope this changes in future! Oh and if you’re shy, there’s no privacy glass. Everyone in the bar/lobby can see you in your bikini/shorts/costume. It really wasn’t four star at this time. Paying a hell of a lot for the brand really. There wasn’t anything extra special, not even the toiletries! No shower cap, no little ‘nice extras’. We were wishing we’d booked at premier inn, holiday inn or travel lodge. It’s also not as close as you think to the centre, but I’m not good in heels so I don’t think I’m a good judge. Having said this. We spoke to Jessica about all of this on checking out and she was very sympathetic and understanding of our complaint. She refunded the parking, the breakfast we had in the conference room and gave us 25% off the whole stay. Very good complaint handling, even if we hadn’t have received the refunds.

Property was reasonably close to the town centre. Checking in was very quick. All staff were very helpful & friendly. Room was a good size & very clean & comfortable. Bathroom also a good size & very clean. Good choice of drinks in the bar but no cask beers. Very good breakfast with plenty of choice.

Making here too many meeting and every time staff are amazing and lovely especially Dagmara. Just we loved you guys. Gourmet menu could be richer 😊. Still I recommend every professional come to visit here they will understand what I mean.

We arrived well before check-in time and were told that they had arranged for us to have adjoining rooms which consequently weren’t quite ready. This wasn’t a problem and we were really pleased to know we’d be next to each other. We had a light meal, in the course of which the receptionist came over to give us our key cards. Brilliant, but we were almost ready to leave for the afternoon. They arranged for a taxi to take us to our venue (a gin tasting elsewhere in the city) and we returned much later. Our rooms were lovely and my father was particularly pleased that he had a large walk-in shower. Breakfast was good and the staff were all excellent.

I stayed here for business and it is ideal for that. There is a car park and the rooms are big. I had a sofa bed in the room as well. I did not like the toilet being in its own room as it was very small and didn't smell great. But the shower room was lovely. You can buy a toothbrush and toothpaste set at reception for £1.50, in case you forget yours. Bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was okay (Bacon was a bit hard, sausage wasn't great quality). However I did enjoy my stay and will come back. I would of liked a pair of slippers and a robe though and also I requested a bath, but did not get one and was not informed of this, just found out when I got to the room. There are refurbishments going on but I did not hear anything. I arrived Sunday around 4pm and left Monday around 9am.

The room was extremely spacious, modern and clean and much to our delight there was a plate of fruit/chocolate very nicely displayed in our room on arrival, our overall stay here was excellent. We visited with our teacup Yorkshire terrier (charge of £12) and the hotel staff were very accommodating, they even allow your fur babies in the bar area which was a very big plus for us. Will definitely be booking this hotel on our next visit to York.
