Great location, very close to centre. Brilliant rooms and food, Staff happy to help at all times, would highly recommend for the price. They have special offers on during the week but the best has to be gin Saturday. Would definitely go back.

We booked in here for 2 nights for a mini break at the end of the week. We arrived early and checked in before our room was ready, but they were able to take our luggage and leave them in the room whilst we went for lunch, this was very good in my opinion. the hotel itself is immaculate in my opinion, the room was very clean and comfortable. The only downside in my opinion was the lack of sky, and the television was a bit small, but I'm being picky. The bed was huge and very comfortable, there was ample storage for our clothes and other items, the room had a safe and came supplied with the usual items, hairdryer, kettle etc. The bathroom was immaculate again with a bath/shower and loads of lovely fluffy towels. One option I would highly recommend when booking here is the option of breakfast. They have everything you could possibly want on a buffet and it's all delicious, from homemade granola to a full english or just toast and juice if you choose. The service was impeccable from first walking in to leaving. The hotel is nicely located on the tourist bus route, and within walking distance of some amazing restaurants if you decide to eat out. We will definitely be staying here again in the future.

We decided to have a day and a night break, with friends and looked at the historic city of York, the other couple had never been and above a day trip we had never stayed overnight. We decided on the Best Western Monkbar hotel due to it's close proximity to the town center and having checked out their advert and booked. On arrival I was a little concerned about the parking until the hotel receptionist gave me a permit in a secure nearby car park. Newly refurbished, we had a nice double room with all the facilities you would expect from a hotel, En suite, TV, Coffee/Tea and a view of the city wall and above all an excellent bed, I suffer with a bad back and struggle to find a comfortable bed. We had the day sight seeing and visited a local restaurant near the Shambles at night and finally finished off with a pleasant night cap in the hotel bar. Did it finish there, no! An all you can eat buffet breakfast in the morning in the restaurant, which set us up for the journey back home and lovely end to a super time with friends. Do it again? You bet, once again Best Western have restored my faith in what to expect from a good hotel at reasonable money. If you have read any of my recent reviews, some private hoteliers really don't know what they are doing or what is expected of them, thankfully these people do. Brilliant !!!

The reception staff were fantastic when checking in & out of the hotel. The room was well set out but the mattress (for me) was a bit too hard but the Wife was fine with it. Apart from a few blown bulbs, the TV not tuned in properly (couldn't watch the rugby) and a HUGE spiders web all was good. Our one dinner in restaurant was OK at best - the food was pretty good but the waitress that constantly hovered around the table waiting to take our order, after we requested to be given "5 minutes" put a downer on the meal....let's just say, every time you looked up, it seems like she was there waiting. The bar staff were awesome, ensuring Gin Saturday went very well - fun conversation and a good selection of drinks to choose from. Breakfast provided ample amounts & great choices of food - which set you up for the day. Even with parties being hosted until midnight for the evenings we were there - it never affected our sleep. All in all , an over zealous waitress was the only real blot on the landscape during a fantastic weekend. Would I return to this Best Western - YES of course I would.

I was booked to stay for 1 night in a suite and would never go back! The suite was incredibly dark and outdated. The bathroom had no shower just a shower attachment over the bath that you couldn't attach to the wall. At 6ft tall I wouldn't fit in the bath and crouching and holding the shower over my head also not an option. Not great value for £125. Reception were very helpful and did manage to swop my room but it was on the noisy road and next to the stairs and lift so I could hear people coming and going throughout the evening and morning. A bad nights sleep was had. The room smelt of paint, no iron, no air con and a small and old tv. At 6.45 I received a wake up call that I did not ask for! VERY unimpressed by this! I wouldn't stay here again and only did today as hotel Indigo was full.

My husband and I just spend a long weekend here celebrating our first wedding anniversary. The hotel itself was lovely and in a great location. The parking wasn't an issue as the car park is just around the corner. The hotel staff even left a anniversary card for us, which was very thoughtful and unexpected. Everyone was really nice to talk to and the service was excellent. The on site bar and restaurant were very nice with a wide selection to eat and drink. My husband and I ate here our first night and had a night cap in the bar the second night. Thank you for a lovely stay which gave us wonderful memories for our first anniversary.

Great hotel, clean and nicely decorated. Staff were friendly and the room was very comfortable and spacious. The breakfast was delicious and the service good.If you are looking for a nice convenient hotel in York, this is the one!

We stayed at the Monkbar for two nights over a weekend. The location is great - really easy to get to from the train station and close to pretty much everything you'd want to see in the city centre. The hotel has recently been refurbished in a bright, modern vintage look, which makes it more fun and personable than a Travelodge or Premier Inn. We stayed in an Executive Double room on the second floor. It was a good size, and kept nice and clean. No complaints! The breakfast was good - usual English breakfast (which was cooked really well) plus pastries, cereals and fresh fruit. Overall, this was the ideal hotel for our city break and I would highly recommend staying here.

All the problems that I reported were not solved, some of them I reported more than once. The room was full of dust, and some towels were left wet! Disappointing reception service. Lack of variety on the breakfast services and very disorganized.

First time at this hotel, i booked a disabled room and was impressed with the size and access to my room. I was able to drive my electric buggy into my room via the large bathroom to charge it up. The bedroom was large with a wet room which meet my needs. The hotel is very clean and the staff very helpful the restaurant has easy access and the menu not large but is a little overpriced but the food is good. Breakfast is buffet style not my favourite kind but after a slow start it did improve. If you are a blue badge holder you can get on site parking this is a great help on a foot note on my wife's birthday Louise pulled out all the stops to make the evening meal very special a big thank you and yes we would return as the the hotel is very central to York.
