On a 2 day business trip. Hotel was fair enough...nothing grand. Been refreshed a short while ago but I would not say refurbished. Room was bog standard, Good size , large TV and hot drinks area. Shower was good, hot and powerful. Towels could do with replacing and could be bigger...bath towel more like a hand towel. Breakfast food was good....ok this about as good as it gets. The food and service in the evening was poor. Food was overpriced for what you got. Not great quality and small portion. First night a group of 10 had to wait 1.15 mins just to get our starters...and then a long wait for mains.....and to be told ....sorry we've not got what you ordered. Really poor. Second night...pre arranged to in smaller groups, service was smoother but the food again was not great as above......over priced.....
I arrived at The Mercure Haydock on January 9th with some colleagues from work. After checking in which was pleasant and uneventful I was assigned a room on the first floor. After a bit of a hike I arrived at my room to find a red light signalling that my card would not allow access. I turned around and traipsed back to reception, I informed the lady behind the desk ( table) of my plight and she asked me was I sure? The lady correctly assumed that I was not pleased and allocated me a "privilege" room on the ground floor. Suitably placated I found this new room and promptly went to bed for half an hour to rest before showering and meeting my work colleagues for dinner. My alarm shifted me out of bed and I went into the bathroom to shower and get organised. When I switched on the shower, the temperature control dropped into the bath and the mixer valve moved only slightly, water however squirted out of the shower all over me and the bathroom. Try as I might I was unable to budge the valve. I reported the situation to reception who sent a duty manager round to my room. He too struggled with the valve and managed to get a semblance of a stream of water emanating. He suggested that I move to another room... I went to reception and was given a key card for a junior suite. I duly moved my kit and returned to my colleagues unshowered as they were sitting at the table waiting on me joining them. My five colleagues and I sat down at 8:30pm, the dining room was busy with two large table of guests and other tables that were occupied by couples and one singleton. I noticed that other tables were messy and obviously remained uncleared after being occupied. Our order was taken at 8:55pm. Our starters arrived at 9;40pm, water which had been requested never arrived despite our waitress being reminded twice. One starter which was bread and olives was served with stale bread that had been toasted. The others were fine. At 10.00pm we again asked our server where our mains where, a lady who appeared to be a supervisor told us in a very off hand manner that our mains would be along in 5 minutes?. At 10.20pm I went to bed and left my colleagues to it. They reported the next morning that the mains arrived at 10.35pm and were very poor. Steaks arrived overcooked and a chicken dish was described to me as tasteless. As a party we refused to pay for the meal and the drinks supplied with it. As I retired to bed I informed the lady at reception of our issues. She apologised profusely however the damage was done. I will most certainly not be back anywhere near this disaster.
First two nights the food is awful 45 mins for a cold burger at £13-50 nachos were disgusting and so small with dry cheese .despite being told they would improve the food 2nd night cold soup with a 2 inch roll dry as old boots .and a chicken curry was veal no taste at all worst food I've ever had in 30 years on the road .the rooms are nice but if you want to eat on your stay here forget it it's overpriced and disgusting
I cannot say anything bad about this hotel, the staff are extremely friendly and welcoming. The check in was very simple and the receptionist couldn't have been more helpful. I know some reviewers mention the £5 to park in car park but it's got barriers at the entrance so it's secure and for me the payment wasn't an issue. The room was big and the bed was massive had the best sleep ever. Everything in room and bathroom was extremely clean. And the shower was lovely. Breakfast is £10 but for that you can eat as much or little as you need so again not an issue and the food was good. Can't wait to stay again 😊
Spent a couple of nights here in November for a craft retreat. Hotel is beautiful, spotlessly clean and the staff are lovely. My room was gorgeous. Absolutely enormous bed, great bathroom, plenty of wardrobe space and tea & coffee making in room. I used the gym, which was small but perfectly adequate for a weekend away. I ate in the restaurant for several meals - all were well cooked and plentiful. All my meals were included in my retreat cost so can't comment on value for money but the food was delicious. Bar area is nice and cosy and it was never too busy or noisy. There was even a wedding happening that weekend but it was very well handled.
I have always loved this hotel with it being so close to relatives and have stayed numerous times and attended functions, weddings etc dating back over 15 years when it was then the Thistle. Decided to stay here Christmas day after visiting family, checked in mid afternoon and found that the room we had been allocated wasn't a privilege room as expected (the hotel rang me 2 days earlier and asked if I wanted to upgrade for £10 to which I agreed). Queried this with the lady on reception who quickly apologised and said that she would ensure we have the nespresso machine and complimentary drinks brought to the room, in fact she said she would deliver some drinks vouchers for me and my girlfriend and slip them under the door for the inconvenience. We returned later that day to find that nothing had been done, no drinks machine or vouchers so we decided to just leave it and would mention the next morning. Checked out and was told a manager would ring me that day to discuss, I had to ring the property later that evening and was then told by Michaela she was going to ring me, the £10 upgrade fee had been refunded and they were sorry. I was more bothered by the promises made to have things put in the room to then find nothing had been done. When questioned about this I was told again we are sorry and we have refunded your £10, oh and if you stay with us again we will upgrade you for free. I am still awaiting an email from Michaela as she promised, but there seems to be a trend here!! Having stayed in the Edinburgh Mercure two days previous to this I would rate that hotel as dated and in need of a refurb (planned I believe) however the service from the staff there was top notch. Definitely lessons to be learnt, more disappointingly it put a downer on a lovely Christmas Day, hotel aside.
What can I say great venue good service friendly staff. Would recommend you look at this hotel if you are wanting a place well situated for transport. Bar is a bit pricey but worth putting on your room tab ha ha
Have used this hotel a number of times over the years, previously as Thistle. The hotel hasn't changed much. It is a "stable buiding" design around a courtyard, though the courtyard has a big function marquee in the middle which makes weekend stays a little noisy at times even on the outer rooms. The rooms are a reasonable size, with usb charging by the bed as a plus. The bathrooms haven't been touched and still have the same poor beige design looking a little tired. A very good breakfast with plenty choice of cooked, cereals, toast, pastries and fruits. Staff very friendly and helpful throughout. I was disappointed with checkout having been told I hadn't paid in advance so charged on departure which was subsequently refunded on complaint only to be told I was refunded £5 less than I'd overpaid which was car parking charge. This is a hotel away from any built up area and I understand the need to charge to dissuade people from using their cars when meeting people for onward journeys but to charge residents here is a very poor show. I shall think twice about staying here again.
I stayed for one night prior to attending a meeting the day after. As a woman travelling alone I felt extremely welcome and looked after. Room was very clean, large and had all you needed. I also had a wonderful fish pie! Breakfast was hot fresh and very tasty. Excellent service from Demi.
I write many reviews and it takes a lot for me to be disappointed. But unfortunately here I was. It started when I arrived to be told there were no double beds available (which I booked) and had 2 singles. I accepted and went to my room. The room itself was nice. Very clean and spacious. However, when I went for my evening meal I soon started to get very grumpy about this hotel. When arriving at the restaurant I was told there is a 30 minute wait for food. this baffled me as there were only 6 people sat in the restaurant and the lounge was not to busy either. 45 minutes later after receiving my £20 rack of ribs, they were the worst ribs I had ever had. hard meat and little flavor. I was so hungry and didn't want to wait another 45 minutes so ate my poor meal. After finishing, i then waited another 25 minutes for my cheesecake desert. Overall the quality of food and the time taken was well below average. As a paying guest I don't care about chef issues or being busy, I don't expect to wait that long. Worst case if I wait that long I expect the food to be outstanding. After going back to my room I then found out the kettle did not work and I could not connect my PlayStation to the hotels internet....
