Northstar Lodge By Welk Resorts4.5 out of 5.0

We spent another Spring Break at Northstar by Welk, and enjoyed every moment. Everything about our week was perfect: from the cleanliness and working order of our beautifully-appointed suite, to the friendly, helpul staff, to idyllic skiing conditions. Even took advantage this trip of some of the resort activities, and had a ball! Lake Tahoe has always been one of our favorite vacation destinations, and Welk just makes our time spent that much more enjoyable.
If you love to ski at Northstar but don't love carrying your skis this is a great location. You can leave your skis and boots (in boot heaters) overnight in the check room and pick them up in the morning before walking the short distance to the gondola. The units are large and very well maintained. All of the staff are friendly and helpful.
This is a great property. Easy to get around.Tons of amenities.Clean! Family friendly. Easy access to the Gondola. Great snow when we visited. Close to the nice village where there are great restaurants, shopping and more!
....and tell us they have to change our family 5-night vacation to 2-nights, but they're happy to relocate us to the "boomtown" best western for the other 3-nights...which is not even close to a "like resort" or in the village of Northstar. I mean, I'm not a hospitality pro, but my common sense says this is BS. Be very wary of Welk and how they run their operations. This would never happen at a real luxury property. What a joke....yea so our much anticipated stay starting this week is now ruined and hence why I'm here letting everyone know to not even bother with this place.
Great place for families or couples if you are skiers. It is right on the mountain. There are some different types of casual restaurants, a gym, hot tubs and an ice skating rink. Our 2 bedroom room was very nice and had a kitchen area and a washing machine. Definitely a great pace to check out.
We are HRC owners and were fortunate to book a couple nights in a 3-bedroom unit during President's Day Week. The location was simply PERFECT for skiing and enjoying magnificent Northstar. The gondola behind the unit was so convenient, and the views from the balconies are gorgeous. The 3-bedroom unit was massive and really nicely decorated, and we all the staff members we met were really friendly and courteous! It was really very spacious and comfortable for our family. But the unit needs improvements (no major issues, but things shouldn't be off in a premium property like this): 1. You should provide matching towels. Our master bath had nice big blue bath towels with white hand and face towels. All the towels were of high quality and soft, but this was weird for a place like this. 2. The master shower drain is slow and quickly fills with water. 3. The master bath toilet needs adjustment to flush properly. 4. You should provide a small shovel or broom in the unit to brush snow off of the balcony so that guests can use it. 5. A 3 bedroom unit should be stocked with enough dishes and glassware for 8 people. Many glasses were missing. 6. You should replace all the throw pillows in the living room. They are clearly worn out. Hopefully management will raise the maintenance/housekeeping quality standards since we hope to return here in the future!
As Welk owners, I visit this property 3-4 times a year, and have stayed in both the studio and 2 bed condos. The 3 star rating is based on a cumulation of stays over the last 3 years. The first 2 years of my stay definitely earned 4 star rating, but this year I will not give it more than 2 stars. Pros: *good location, can sometimes ski in, depending on snow level *Well equipped kitchen *luxury furnishing *Friendly staff Cons: *Over the past year, have noticed much more issues with upkeep. A few small things now seem to go wrong each trip, from dishwasher breaking, humidifier breaking to broken or missing kitchen utensils, dirty room and supplies missing after check in *For the past 2 stays, room was not cleaned on the 4th day as per usual for one week stay. The first time, we accepted the excuse that they put us on the wrong date, but to happen again on the 2nd stay? This time because they were running late and still could not get to my room by 5pm... the cleaning schedule needs to be better managed *getting too busy that the movie theatre is booked out for the whole week and the activity room has a line 10 deep for the Nintendo Switch, but staff don’t want to manage the queue or stop the one boy from hogging it to play Fortnite for 30+ mins while others wait. During my last stay, something unpleasant happened from another guest, it was not the staff’s fault of course, but I felt they could have handled the situation better. I contacted Welk Owner services on 2 occasions but was ignored. I guess now that I am an owner, even if my stay is terrible it’s not like I can stay elsewhere unless I sell my stake at a loss, so no need for Welk to satisfy their owners. The new Welk model seems to be sell, take your money, then leave you at your own peril.
Finishing up a 5-night stay here with my family. We’ve been in a 2-bedroom suite on the second floor of the Welk building. On the surface the property is appealing. The buildings’ exterior and the interior of the public spaces are well done. The staff are very friendly upon your arrival. However, the rooms leave much to be desired. The furniture is worn—the coffee table and bedroom pieces have large chunks of veneer broken off. Multiple lightbulbs are burnt out or eerily flicker (many of the ceiling lights have ugly fluorescent bulbs that put out cold, white light). The kitchen lacks many basics (e.g., of the three pots, only one has a lid and there’s only one smallish frying pan). Housekeeping only comes every 3-4 days, and when they do they don’t clean the bathtubs or notice you need more coffee. One of the phones is broken; a pull cord on the blinds is broken; a towel bar is broken; the WiFi is horribly crappy so you can’t watch a show on your computer without it freezing every 35 seconds... The staff is great and responsive, and we appreciate that they offer activities (though we haven’t had time to partake), but it seems like there’s no attention to the infrastructure. For what it costs there are too many small things that could be easily and cheaply remedied, that really start to grate on you after five days here. This place could be excellent but, currently, it’s nowhere near worth the price tag.
Where do I start with this review... I travel a lot both personally and professionally, and and have stayed in many different hotels in many different cities around the world. My experience at the Welk Resort’s Northstar Lodge (the “Lodge”) will be remembered as one of the most disappointing stays of all times - this being because it does have the potential to be great but it failed to be so during our stay. When my husband and I were deciding where to stay in Tahoe, we were down to the Lodge and the Ritz Carlton. We ultimately chose the Lodge because the room came with a microwave and a mini refrigerator, which we knew we would need with our baby. Prior to the day of our arrival, my husband and I both called ahead to see if it would be possible to check in early since we were traveling with our baby. No one answered the phone and so we both left voicemails. We never received a call back. We then decided just to drive up and try. On our way there, we both called the Lodge again and still no answer. We were beginning to get concerned since we were wondering if anyone was even at the hotel! Then finally someone answered to which we expressed our frustration and asked to speak to a manager. We were told that a manager would call us back within the next few minutes since he had just arrived (at around 10am). We never received a call back from the manager. Upon our arrival, we asked to speak to the front office manager, William. William came out and let’s just say, he’s one of the rudest persons I’ve ever met and it’s unbelievable that he’s their front office manager. William was very unprofessional and unapologetic. He did though let us check in early but after giving us a hard time about checking in early and also after making several condescending remarks to us. William told us that our studio booking was “the most basic room” out of all their rooms and to “not expect much”. He also said people only book the studio when booking a two or three bedroom. How insulting and condescending is that?! He went on to say to not expect much other than “a bed, a couple of chairs and a refrigerator big enough to hold only a couple bottles of water”. We said we had our baby’s milk and food with us and his response was that the refrigerator would “only hold a couple bottles of water.” My husband and I had booked a studio because the options were either a studio or a 2 bedroom. We did not need a 2 bedroom since it was only the two of us and our small child. After William insulted us and our room selection, we asked if was possible to have a quiet room for our baby. William’s response was that all of their “studios are located in the noisiest parts of the hotel”. Um, ok thank you for that further insult as well. We then just decided to take the room and leave William and his ongoing insults. When we arrived at our room, we were actually pleasantly surprised. There was a refrigerator big enough to hold a case of water! This made us feel even better after knowing William had just lied to us as well. That evening, we noticed our toilet was running. We called downstairs for help and once again there was no answer. Why do they even bother having phones?? My husband then went downstairs and asked them to send someone up to look at the toilet. They sent Jayson who was very polite and friendly - probably their friendliest person there. Jayson fixed it but then the toilet started running again. We called downstairs and luckily, someone answered! Jayson was sent upstairs again and he fixed our toilet again. The next morning, our toilet was running again. I went downstairs to formally say something and another engineer was standing in the lobby. The front desk lady said he was more “experienced” and would be able to fix it. The engineer said he knew what the problem was and would fix it. I also asked him to make sure that he closed our front door since it also wasn’t closing properly. He said he would. When we got back to our room that afternoon, we noticed our front door was not closed. That was great to see since all of our belongings were inside. Also, our toilet was still running. Instead of complaining again (since it became very apparent to us that the staff would not be able to fix the toilet), we decided to just manually flush the toilet ourselves. However, it is very concerning to know how much water is being wasted at this Lodge!! To summarize, this Lodge is in a good location but it falls so short of being great. It’s very disappointing but if properly ran, it could be a great place to stay in Tahoe.
This is a fun place for adults and family's, I was there on opening day and although the snow was not there people were still having fun. stayed in the lodge in a very nice place, I would go back again
