Kimpton Mason & Rook Hotel4.5 out of 5.0

We arrived at 2:45 and Had to wait 1 -1/2 hours for our room. We had a king room and it was nice and roomy. Bathroom great. TV was huge. Our View was rooftops! Stocked fridge, but be careful- water is $6 a bottle & snickers bar $5! No microwave or coffee maker in room and ice only available from front desk or delivery- (tips applies) parking via valet only at $50 a day. So if your budget is limitless, this is nice, but there are too many much less expensive and still nice hotels to choose from for my budget!
I really wanted to like this hotel - I've stayed in a Kimpton every times I've been in DC. But it was by far the worst Kimpton...or hotel experience I've had in a long time. The first night, I got bumped. While 'd made my reservation by phone with the hotel, I arrived behind another guest checking in and was sent to another hotel about 10 min by taxi. I asked the nest day and was told it was because of broken air-conditioners and overbooking. And they apparently bumped non-VIP guests. Others were able to check in. To their credit, they upgraded my room, and I thought it would be an excellent stay. Oh how wrong. Luggage chaos ensued. On checking in, I asked them to bring my luggage up. I waited an hour, went to dinner, and asked again to bring my luggage up. Still no bags, and no idea where they were. The couple in in line in front of me told the check out desk they came back to their room for the night to find all their stuff gone. Apparently housekeeping had packed up their stuff and moved it out. Absent maid service. Two days in a row, no one came to make up the room. I asked - sometimes twice a day - at the front desk, left the "ready for you sign" on the door, and finally totally gave up. It wasn't worth the effort any more and we just kept the room tidy. The tub broke, the fridge broke, the staff seemed apologetic but nothing ever worked. I had problems getting my bill the night before an early check-out then the morning of, the computer was broken, After a lot of follow-up by phone, they finally emailed me my bill for the incorrect number of nights and with a mysterious $48 mini-bar charge. The design is nice, but this place simply isn't worth the effort and frustration. They make guests feel like they're flying economy class on United airlines, unwanted and second rate service.
First...the hotel is beautiful and in a great area to walk to nearly wvery tourist destination. BUT...please expect to stand in lines if you are on a top floor waiting for staff, guests, and bar crowds. Over the course of a few days, this is frustrating. We arent lazy so we took the stairs nearly every occassion, but our dogs hips did not appreciate 7 floors of stair climbing 5 times a day. Advice....1. Get a low floor. 2. Dont eat at the restaurant downstairs. 3. Call for valet at least 30 mins in advance of checkout.
What you would expect for a Kimpton in the upscale boutique hotel. Was vacationing with kids, so it was great to be near so many neighborhood style restaurants that you could walk to on the vibrant 14th St. About a mile walking distance to the Mall, and not much closer to the Metro. But easy Uber rides everywhere. The rooftop bar was popular with locals - pool closes at 4PM,
I stayed three days as a solo traveler and thought the hotel was aesthetically very nice. The location is also excellent. But I didn't think the service or functionality was that great, and don't really know why it deserves 4.5 stars in terms of amenities, as compared to say, a Hyatt or any other upscale three-star urban hotel. Lacking an in-room coffeemaker was a big deal for me. I was on West Coast time so slept in each day and left the room late; housekeeping never came either afternoon though I put the sign out requesting it. My keycard stopped working at times, another minor annoyance. Since I got a really good deal price-wise, I thought it was still worth it, but the hotel wasn't any better and perhaps not as good as some three star hotels I've stayed at, so I would definitely not shell out a premium price to stay here.
Stayed for a week in June of 2017 and was very happy not only with the hotel and rooms but also the great location. Many great places to eat and drink within a few minutes walk on 14th street. Made it hard to want to leave the area at all. Roof top bar was fun as well as the comp beer and wine daily in the lobby. Staff was excellent on every level.
Nice hotel for the money. Great location. So-so service from the staff. Cute things Kimpton used to do to set themselves apart are pretty standard at these "boutique-y" hotels. I paid to check-in early, but they didn't have a room ready. I waited around for FOUR hours before I was able to get into my room.
Stayed here recently for a very long weekend. You cannot beat the location in DC, and we have stayed everywhere. You can walk nearly anywhere from the hotel, including to many great restaurants in the surrounding area. We stayed in a 1 bedroom suite with 1.5 baths which was beautifully decorated in a warm almost masculine contemporary style. The rooftop pool is excellent if you have time, especially when the bar is open. Afternoon happy hour with wine makes for a pleasant time in the lobby. Had a few drinks and bites to eat in Radiator the lobby restaurant/bar. Everyone we encountered gave us excellent service and we have zero complaints. This will be where we stay next time as well. You won't regret it here!
This a beautiful hotel that has been recently renovated, I wish that they had invested in additional staff to match the hotel ambience. Room was not ready when we arrived, and forced to upgrade to more expensive room, that was not service the first day of our stay until we asked at 4PM the next day. No ice machines available to guests, and need to have staff deliver ice to your room, took 2 hours to get ice.
The hotel staff need additional training, they were not friendly, my room was not ready when I requested it. I asked for and paid for an upgrade and it was not available. The response was a quote of the policy. They are not the right selection for a business traveler.
