If you want to stay in downtown Santa Monica but not right on the beach, this is a pretty good choice. The hotel is modern and well-maintained, and the property is within walking distance to most restaurants and businesses as well as public transportation. (Only downside is that it sits right on the 10 Freeway, which can be busy and noisy.) The hotel is a bit of a panopticon - if you have an interior room, remember to draw your blinds or someone will end up peeking in on you. Front desk staff seemed overwhelmed when i checked in and checked out, but this didn't otherwise affect my overall stay.
Excelent location and room. The rooms are an old apartment building converted into hotel, so the room we got was a full 1 bedroom aparment, 1 block away from Santa Monica 3rd av shops and nightlife, and 3 blocks from Santa Monica beach. Definitely will go there again.
We moved from SM in 2006 but return every January to visit. This hotel has been our home away from home each time. Always reliably clean with the necessary amenities, competitive pricing, AC in good repair, free parking, accessible neighborhood, and the nicest staff imaginable. We are so grateful for the Gateway and look forward to our next stay!
Adding some protein to breakfast menu would go a long way.
