I always avoid booking on American even if I have to pay more on another airline. But I had no choice. I was booked on AA 849 from MCO to DCA on 11/15/2019. I checked the flight status before I left my hotel and the flight was on time. By the time I arrived at the airport 40 minutes later, it was listed as delayed. I checked in and while walking to the gate, I stopped at the Special Services desk. I asked the rep where the plane was coming from and why the delay. She said the flight was enroute from PHL. She did not know why there was a delay. I then asked if there was a later flight if my delayed flight was cancelled. She said “don’t worry about that” and walked away... no answer. Needless to say, I was at the beginning of another nightmare experience, compliments of American Airlines. My flight was delayed and delayed and delayed. The equipment finally arrived and I went to the gate podium and asked another rep what the options were for a later flight. The rep ignored me. The second rep at the gate started an announcement that there were mechanical issues with the incoming equipment and they were trying to locate another plane. At this point I started back down the hall to Special Services but when I arrived no one was there. Another fellow passenger was also there and finally an AA rep came out. I was rebooked on Flight 1649 but I learned it was delayed too. In checking my boarding pass, I saw that American had changed my group from 6 to 8 (meaning no room for carry-on). I went to the podium and ask the rep to change it back to group 6 but she refused. Finally I arrived at DCA and got home around 1AM, over 4 hours past my scheduled time. MY CONCERN IS THAT AMERICAN OFTEN HAS “MECHANICAL ISSUES”. I am a frequent traveler and have had cancelled and delayed flights! Is American Airlines safe? I don’t think so. I will continue to avoid American.
