Marriott's Grande Ocean3.5 out of 5.0

My family of 3 visited the resort for the first time to celebrate our son's 13th birthday. The 2 bedroom villa with ocean front balcony was spacious with all the expected amenities. The beach was a stroll away and renting beach chairs and an umbrella is a must (unless you bring your own) because of the sun. The beach was not crowded and we were able to really have a grand time. The pools were great (our favorite, the Dolphin Pool). We visited Sea Pines (with a courtesy day pass...otherwise $6 a car) and walked up 114 steps in the Lighthouse for some amazing pictures. Visited Harbortown to purchase some souvenirs and had some of the best tasting ice cream ever. While in Hilton Head we had dinner at Chow Daddies (good food, good service, less than ten minutes from resort, and no wait to be seated), Skull Creek Boathouse (good food, crowded, 1-hour wait to be seated, 20 minutes from resort had to cross the bridge and pay a toll), and Ruby Dee's (amazing food, slow service, too loud almost good live band, and nice looking restaurant). We would definitely visit Grande Ocean again and maybe invite friends (but we had a great trip with just "us").
My family of 5 is currently staying at the Grande Ocean. At check-in, we get to our room which is a 2 bedroom with 1 bed in each room. Lovely room but we had asked for a 2 bedroom with a king in 1 room and 2 doubles in the other to accommodate our family of 5 (living room has a pull out sofa). Called the front desk and they moved us to the right room. Our second night here maintenance showed up and our shower was leaking through to the unit below. Our son's bedroom rug was soaked and still is, 2 days later. Housekeeping was supposed to take care of it and never did and now it is starting to smell musty. Speaking of housekeeping, we had a mid-week housekeeping set up for this morning. We had our "nesting" sign up when Sonia T. came. She left a note to call by 3:00 pm if we still wanted our room cleaned today. We called at 12:00 to let them know we did in fact want the room cleaned. When we returned at 4:00 pm it was still a mess. A second phone call was required and then they came. However they didn't restock any bathroom toiletries (although on her checklist, she marked that this was done). A third phone call and then someone came up (with an attitude) and handed us a garbage bag full of shampoo, toilet paper, etc. Things always got fixed but I feel they were always apologizing for things that went wrong. I have stayed at many Marriott properties all over the country. It's a shame this stay has not been up to par. The room itself is lovely, as are the grounds. It's the service that is lacking.
We have been staying here for years and the place is always great. The location is great and could not ask for better, they have a ton of activities for the kids to do and the pools are always clean. I did however feel that the staff were not as friendly as they have been in the past and I know that quite a few guests that I met on this trip agreed that they felt the same. The service is still good but when you have an expectation that has been created to expect the best then you get only ok, it noticeable. I would still recommend staying here and plan to return in the future but I hope that things return to the way that they were.
After visiting here over the last 23 years , we have to say the initial walk into our villa was breathtaking as always . We found the rooms to be completely remodeled and everything was spotless and impeccable !! The pools , grill areas and common areas were perfect . Our one sadness was that Pool Bar Jim had relocated down the beach . We always looked forward to the frosty drinks, but we found the bartenders at Loggerhead Landing to be friendly and efficient . Another fantastic memory and family trip in the books . No wonder when we ask the kids if we should vacation somewhere else, they always say "we want to go to Hilton Head "!!!! So we make the trip from Chicago/Milwaukee every other year !! Looking forward to 2019 !!
The condo was very clean, and modern. It had a great view (overlooking the pools which reflected onto our ceiling at night) There are several activities per day and the staff are welcoming. A couple of outdoor bars, and live music. The condo is spacious with a whirlpool bathtub and two roomy showers. Can't wait till our next vacation back!
My husband and I were invited to stay a few days with my cousin who is a property owner. The Marriott Grande Ocean lives up to the "grand" name. First class accommodations and excellent customer service from all that I encountered. What a wonderful experience to walk to the Marketplace in the morning, grab a cup of coffee and sit and enjoy the stillness of the day. Luxury at it's best.....I thought I was the owner...big smile. I invited myself back to spend more time next year.
I have stayed at this resort numerous times, usually in September. The weather is great. The kids are back in school. The pools are not crowded. I usually stayed in the Sea Horse building which has some rooms that overlook one of the pools with a view of the ocean, and others that ocean front. I prefer the ones with the pool and ocean view. There are several pools, including an indoor one. There are also outdoor hot tubs as well as one inside. There is a mini library where you can just go in and get a book, no charge. There is a Marketplace on site where you can buy sundries as well as pizza and other sandwiches. There is also a food stand with outdoor seating where you can get a number of fast meals such chicken fingers and fries. There is an outside bar located by one of the pools. There are plenty of lounge chairs many with umbrellas. There are many activities for children. My lodgings consisted of two bedrooms, two baths, living room-dining room, and balcony with table and chairs. The master bedroom had a double Jacuzzi tub. The extra bedroom had two queen size beds. Everything is first class. The grounds are beautiful. The onsite food is good, and there are great restaurants and other activities around. Did I mention they also have tennis courts which can be reserved and tennis lessons that are free. Parking is located under each building. Free access to Sea Pines is also included (Harbor Town, South Beach, Marinas). A truly outstanding place to getaway.
We purchased in 2007 & have made 11 trips to Marriott Grande Ocean and honestly wish we could go more often and always wish we had more time. We truly never want to leave HHI or this resort once we are there. I'm not sure if I can add anything new that has not already been reviewed, but from a long-term owner's perspective & frequent traveler, I can honestly say this has s one of the nicest family beach resorts we have ever found anywhere. There are 3 LARGE family pools & a lap pool, along with a large indoor pool and several small kiddie pools. There are so many resort amenities that it's hard to list them all but they are listed on the website. There's a marketplace with sandwiches & pizza, hot dog carts, a poolside grill with an excellent menu, and an outdoor full service bar. The resort also does many nightly special BBQ's & socials as well. There's bike rentals on site, beach chairs available for rent as well for $5 a day (if you forget or just don't want to lug yours along). Pool tables, ping pong, outdoor chess, board games to check out on rainy days... it just goes on & on. It is just very family friendly. We love the proximity to Sea Pines & Coligny Shopping center-- such a quick bike ride to both places. The condos are 2 bedroom/2 full baths, newly renovated, washer/dryer, spacious living area, and full size kitchen with updated stainless appliances. Most every kitchen cooking tool is provided and is fully stocked with Fiesta ware dishes. They even provide paper towels, dish detergent, laundry detergent samples, and dishwasher pods. We never have to buy extra during our stay. If our room was missing anything, they provide/replace it promptly. We asked our kids if they were tired of HHI & wanted to trade next year for a different resort/different beach and they both said "NO!! We love it here!". So we will continue to return each year... until we move there permanently I guess! :)
First off I do like the ocean grand. This review is quite simply a compare and contrast from my last visit two years ago Ice machines. Seems 101 but a big upgrade! Pool bar Jims downgraded to Loggerheads. Wow this was worse than I thought. While I appreciated the (much) shorter lines the vibe and energy has been sucked out of the south pool. With pool bar Jim's you actually were transported to a Caribbean island. Now you are stuck on the border between SC and GA The beach seemed a lot more crowded too. It could have been the allusion of having a fairly early high tide or maybe just more people Sandcastle. We stayed in this building for the first time and it's my favorite Service. No complaints but really you are not asking for much in terms of food and bar service so it really boils down to front desk who were on their A game Parking. Green pass parking can be bad. Yea I'm talking to you Ohio 12 person van who double parked all week! Net. I give my experience and overall A minus. Just down a notch and mainly because Jim is half mile away now! .
Stayed July 4th week in 3rd floor Ocean-side unit. Property exceptionally well maintained, considering high occupancy rates throughout the season. Room was two-bedroom, two bath, with full kitchen, living area, full sized washer-dryer, and balcony. Kitchen up-to-date, clean, all appliances worked very well. Property very clean and neat. Four or five pools, and several easy beach access points. Highly recommend.
