Located on San Francisco Bay, the San Francisco International Airport offers flights to Shanghai aboard Air China, United and US Airways. Travelers can take the BART rapid rail to the airport for around $10. SamTrans buses are another option, and the fare is $4 for those leaving San Francisco. If you are driving to the airport and want to park your car, several lots are available. The long-term parking lot is located on South Airport Boulevard, and riders can leave their vehicles for $18 a day. A shuttle runs every 5 to 15 minutes and takes passengers to the terminal.
Travelers who are looking for a preflight meal can find a variety of dining establishments at the airport. Many are chains from local restaurants and offer full meals. Andalé Mexican Restaurant serves fresh Mexican food and has a full bar. Gordon Biersch serves American cuisine and microbrews. Guava & Java, Just Desserts and Peet's Coffee & Tea offer lighter snacks and drinks.
Shanghai is located on the east coast of China. Visitors to the area will notice Western-style architecture mingling with modern skyscrapers and traditional Chinese buildings. British businessmen came to the area after the Opium War in 1842. Settlers from France, America and Japan soon followed, each putting their unique imprint on the land, and those influences can still be seen today.
The Shanghai Pudong International Airport is located east of the city and lies directly on the bay. The Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is located west of the city and lies completely on the mainland. Those arriving at the Pudong airport can take one of 10 bus lines to the city center for ¥2 to ¥30. Travelers landing at the Hongqiao airport can take a shuttle bus to the downtown area for ¥2 to ¥30, but most fares are around ¥2 to ¥7.
Shanghai sees four distinct seasons. Spring is pleasant and warm, summer tends to be wet and hot, fall sees cooler temperatures, and winters can be cold and cloudy. In July and August, temperatures can reach the mid-90s, and highs in January and February reach the mid-40s. With mild temperatures and less rain, May is a good time to visit.
Visitors to the area should head to the Bund. This waterfront area is known for panoramic views, sculptures and historic buildings. Located in People's Square, the Shanghai Museum is divided into 11 galleries. Visitors can view more than 500 pieces from various dynasties, tricolored glazed pottery and Chinese paintings and calligraphy. Shanghai Science and Technology Museum is home to the IMAX Dome Theater and the IMAX 3-D Large-Format Theater. Visitors can watch digital films or enjoy a spectacular celestial demonstration.
