Popular Routes from Los Angeles to Las Vegas

The 235-mile journey from Los Angeles to Las Vegas only takes an hour by plane and flies over some incredible scenery – you may even catch a glimpse of the Grand Canyon to the east of Vegas.

The air route between the two cities is one of the busiest in the world, with nearly three million passengers a year.

There are dozens of flights to McCarran International Airport from Los Angeles International every day, with airlines including Alaska, American, Delta, Southwest, Spirit and United.

And there are even more flights from LA’s other hubs, including Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, John Wayne Airport in Orange County and Long Beach Airport, so you’re spoilt for choice.

The Flight from Los Angeles to Las Vegas

The exact route your plane takes from LA to Vegas depends on weather conditions and other air traffic. Some flights will head directly over the San Gabriel Mountains in a straight line towards Vegas, but sometimes the flights head east towards the Joshua Tree National Park and north to Vegas over the Mojave National Preserve.

Although the flight takes around an hour, your plane will only be in the air for around 45 minutes. The rest of the time is spent taxiing to and from the runway.

As the journey is a short hop your plane will ascend to around 24,000 feet, a lower altitude than for long haul flights. You will reach speeds of more than 500mph, before the plane begins a long descent in towards Vegas. Accelerating after takeoff and then cruising towards McCarran International makes the flight more fuel efficient and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

The flight is domestic, so while US citizens will not need a passport, some form of government ID will need to be shown before you can board the plane. Non-US citizens will need travel documents.

Getting to LAX is simple. You can get a cab, bus, shuttle or connect from the Metro light rail system. If you are driving there is ample long and short-stay parking at the airport.

Arriving in advance and checking in at least an hour before you are due to take off makes the journey less stressful, as you get to relax before boarding your plane. Remember to check if hold luggage is included in the ticket price when you book with Orbitz, on short flights some airlines charge extra for checked baggage.

Once through security at LAX there are plenty of lounges, bars and restaurants where you can unwind.

The Las Vegas experience begins as soon as you arrive at McCarran International, with slot machines located throughout the airport. From the airport you can grab and bus or taxi into town or hire a car. When you book a flight with Orbitz you can reserve a rental car and book a hotel at the same time.
