Located in northeastern Nevada just south of Idaho, and situated between the Ruby Mountains and the Jarbridge Wilderness, Elko is an excellent destination where one can enjoy nature, wildlife, history, art, festivals and gaming at casinos. Elko is known as "The Heart of Northeast Nevada."
During the spring and summer months, travelers can delight in abundant wildlife and wildflowers, while the winter months feature blankets of pristine snow that are conducive to such pastimes as snowboarding, skiing, sledding and snowmobiling. Half-day and full-day scenic driving tours take visitors north toward the Independence Mountains. Adventurers of all levels can try lake fishing at South Fork State Recreation Area, stream fishing at Lamoille Creek or big game and game bird hunting throughout the region. Guests can explore the California Trail that was traveled by migrants between 1840 and 1870 or tour the Metropolis Ghost Town, which is 64 miles outside of Elko.
If you're planning to fly to Elko, the nearest airport, Elko Regional Airport (EKO), has daily flights to and from Salt Lake City. Transportation is also available from Greyhound and Amtrak. Drivers can reach Elko via Interstate 80, Nevada State Route 225 and Nevada State Route 227. Elko has an average yearly temperature of 46 degrees with winter nights getting as low as 14 degrees and summer days reaching as high as 90 degrees. Elko is host to the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering and the Festival of Trees.
