If you decide to leave your car at home, you’ll find a variety of limousine and shuttle companies that offer ground transportation, or you can utilize the TriMet public bus service. Taxi service is the most convenient option, and fares from the downtown area are approximately $31.
Your flight will land at either LaGuardia Airport, located ten miles east of the Times Square area, or John F. Kennedy International Airport, which lies approximately twelve miles southeast of Lower Manhattan. Pack warm clothing and some light snow gear if you plan to visit during the winter, as temperatures can dip into the mid-20s, and winter snowstorms occur occasionally. Summers are warm, with temperatures generally in the mid-80s, so be sure to pack lightweight clothing if you visit during this season. If you want to avoid the largest crowds, visit New York City in early autumn when the days are still warm. Before you leave, take in a Broadway show, explore the diverse neighborhoods of the city, and catch an aerial view of the New York skyline from the top of the Empire State Building.
New York has so much to offer that you’ll need more than one visit to take it all in. If you use Orbitz.com to make your travel arrangements, the affordable rates you will find on flights from Portland to New York may let you save enough money so you can begin planning a return trip.
