The Big Apple - one of the most recognizable cities on the planet. Bursting with iconic landmarks and oozing personality and charm, everybody should visit New York at least once in their lifetime.
If you’re looking to visit New York and avoid the huge crowds of peak season, then April to June and September to November are great times to go. You’ll also avoid the bitter cold of winter and the scorching heat of summer.
However, the reality is that New York has year-round appeal. Visit at Christmas to see the lights and famous tree at the Rockefeller Center, or book flights to New York for weekend break over the hot summer. With three major airports and regular flights from every major US airport, there’s always a good choice of deals.
It’s is marginally easier to find great value flights to NYC in the off-peak season. However, the Orbitz flight search platform can find you affordable deals at any time of year.
It’s important to try and be flexible, using the ‘Nearby Airports’ button to open up your options to include all three major NYC air hubs. You’ll find it right underneath your chosen departure and arrival destinations
If you can be flexible about when you travel, then this will also throw up plenty more options for plane tickets to New York. Simply tick the box marked ‘My Dates Are Flexible’ when conducting your search, and you can broaden your travel horizons. Being clever with your searches is the best way to get cheap flights to New York. The ‘Show Options’ drop-down menu also lets you use a number of other filters to locate the most suitable flights for you.
There are numerous departures to New York, with multiple flight options each day. These include:
Newark Liberty International Airport is the major airport serving New Jersey, but it’s also within striking distance of the city, at just 15 miles southwest. It was the first major airport in the US and remains one of the northeast’s busiest.
John F. Kennedy International Airport is the primary airport serving New York – and it’s the busiest international gateway for air passengers, handling around 60 million passengers a year. It’s located about 10 miles southeast of Manhattan.
La Guardia Airport is located in the borough of Queens, and is the least busy of the three. Some of its facilities are slightly outdated but plans are in place for an upgrade.
Direct flights to New York are available from a number of different carriers.
For shorter distances, there is no better way of getting around than on foot. This is a great way of experiencing the city at street level where much of the action takes place.
You’ll need a MetroCard for use on the buses and subway, but bear in mind that this does not work on all transport networks, so it’s best to check first. The subway is a little old and creaky but, covering most of the major city areas, it offers a convenient way of getting around.
And, of course, the famed yellow taxis are everywhere on the street and cover most areas of the city. Just flag one down as they pass.
You can’t go to New York and not see the iconic sights. The Statue of Liberty sits on Ellis island, guarding the city, and the Empire State Building towers over its skyline.
Go for a walk in Central park, the vast green space that dominates the center of Manhattan, then take in a show on Broadway, the world’s most famous theatre district.
You can explore more of the five boroughs, hanging out with hipsters in Brooklyn, or visit a couple of the legendary galleries and museums, that include the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Guggenheim Museum.
New Yorkers are also famously abrupt. Don’t take offence if you don’t get too many formalities, it’s all part of the personality, and you’ll quickly get used to it.
