When you fly to Siem Reap International Airport (REP), you might be planning to see a floating village or the rural Cambodian countryside. More than likely, however, you ll be planning to see the world-renowned Angkor Wat.
This 12th century temple complex was built under the direction of Khmer King Suryavarman II and represents one of the largest and most spectacular religious complexes currently in existence.
Angkor Wat isn't the only temple in and around Siem Reap. The Angkor Thom, an equally spectacular temple with interesting architectural intricacies like the Elephants Terrace, is located north of Angkor Wat. Others, like the Wat Bo and the Wat Thmei, are located near the Siem Reap City Center.
Other traditional Cambodian locales include the Floating Villages of Chong Kneas and Kompong Pluk. In Chong Kneas, be sure to make an appearance at the Gecko Centre to learn more about the Floating Village located about 20 miles south of the city center. Siem Reap itself has plenty to offer as well, including a walking tour of the old French Quarter, a visit to the bustling Psar Chaa (Old Market), and a look at Aki Ra's Landmine Museum.
Foreign visitors are prohibited from renting motorcycles in Siem Reap, but renting bicycles is allowed. One of the best places to eat in town is Cuisine Wat Damnak, a restaurant made famous by celebrity chef Johannes Rivieres.
