My husband and I quite often head to Chicago Joe's on Friday evenings and enjoy the great service we've come to expect. However, the last couple times we have been the service has severely lacked due to what we have seen as a total change in management. We have been stuck in a back booth on a few occasions, my husband now calls the dead zone as no one ever acknowledges customers seated there. Tonight, July 21, 2017, was just inexcusable. It was a quiet evening with only about 8 tables full. After we had been seated we waited for over 15 minutes to be acknowledged and offered a drink. We were only acknowledged by Alyssa as she has served us many times in the past and saw us still sitting there without drinks. Although not her section she took over our table anyway. She even took the time to re-order our wings as they had burned the first time. The table of 4 next to us had far worse issues. Their server was just incompetent and ignored them completely. They asked for drinks 5 times before the equally incompetent new manager took their drink order and forgot about them too, only to return 1/2 hour later with drinks after they had already and finally got their original drinks asking if they wanted the duplicate drinks anyway. What an idiot. Several items were forgotten off their dinner orders as well as one of their meals being completely forgotten entirely. After asking for the manager at the end of their meal to no avail.....Alyssa stepped in at the end and assisted them with utter professionalism and courtesy....offered a discount and a cheery attitude and a sincere warm apology. We watched over the course of our meal SEVERAL patrons annoyed, frustrated, and ignored. We also were in a booth where we could hear the wait staff behind a wall complain about the many patrons' dissatisfaction of food and service to this new manager who did NOTHING. One table had to get up 6 times to ask for their bill so they could leave!! We also watched as servers took time out of taking care of their tables to work the front door and take payments!!! This should be a hostess job not a server who is already busy. Ridiculous. A good manager would rectify this issue but then again....this new manager isn't good at all. He walks around with a deer-in-the- headlights look. When asked by patrons for something he just stands there and stares at them. He's like a zombie. Clearly he got this job because he knows someone as he clearly has never worked in the food service industry before. After watching tonight's total debacle, which was both entertaining and so sad at the same time, I'm left shocked that this manager was actually somehow CHOSEN for that position. How bad were the other applicants? Or maybe there werent any? In my opinion, Alyssa is top notch on so many levels. She is professional, courteous, fast, cheery, and goes above and beyond to satisfy a patron every time I have been there. Whether they are seated at her section or not. If you were looking for a manager, Alyssa should have been a consideration. She is the best server in that restaurant. You are VERY lucky to have her. This new manager has to go or you're going to lose ALL of your regular guests not just the hotel guests that only pass through once. I don't care whose friend he is. Bye bye.
clerk forgot to check to see if we were eligible for free breakfast. Found it out when reading the guest directory. We asked another person at the desk on our way to dinner and she wrote us 2 passes after checking. Liked just the shower available in our bathroom. Did not like "pool view" room. Very noisy when water slide is turned on and kids are playing. Breakfast was good, with a number of choices. Excellent friendly service in the dining room.
Nice enough hotel. Room was clean and decently sized. Pool and water slide were cool! Walls are thin as paper you can literally hear every single word the people in the adjoining room are saying (or yelling) until all hours.
I was so impressed with the lifeguards often three at a time watching all the children enjoying the water slide! Great job by the staff keeping the pool area so clean and welcoming! Over the years the pool area has really been maintained well and is set up for families and parties!
Sad to report on this hotel. Originally, It was our 1st choice and we were excited. But we added another night in Thunder Bay and stayed at Valhalla Inn. Wished we would have stayed there for the 2 nights. Hotel room not as nice as Valhalla Inn. Very narrow entry & a pain with large luggage. Tiny closet, TV centered on 1 bed, not good viewing for our 2 Q beds. Did NOT like the bathroom light switch outside the bathroom! That's just stupid. My teen thought it was hilarious to shut it on & off while we were in there. Bathroom has double vanity. Shower had horrible water pressure! It was like a sprinkle. You want to conserve water but the showers took longer to adequately clean long hair. Also, it was a shower only, not tub/shower combo. Room was clean but we could hear the planes landing. Valhalla Inn was much quieter. There are recycle bins in room as well. Must be a Canadian thing. Wish the US would do this. It's a great idea! POOL: Don't book this just for the pool. It is a large pool area not a large pool. Very long slide, no steps to enter pool, just step ladders. Large whirlpool but it was under maintenance and NOT A DROP OF WATER!! Pool is 5' in center. Warm water but chilly when you get out. Big wading pool for the little tykes. Lobby: not big or spacious. Kind of plain. Chose property for pool. Very disappointed stay. Plus they were shutting down the elevator for 6 days the day we left. On the 3rd floor not much fun carrying all our stuff. Also, the power kept going on & off a few times. Everyone had to get out of the pool when that kept happening. Don't really like the restaurant all windows right at pool area.
Stayed here for 3 nights and I won't return. If you day needs to start before 7am your out of luck. No breakfast. You can't even get a cup of coffee. And front desks attitude is well go pound sand. For the rate they charge I expect a bit more of a modern and comfortable room. There were wall outlets missing the covers. Housekeeping could learn how a vacuum works. Sheets smelled of BO. Found that out when it was time to go to bed. At least the second bed was clean. Tv did not work when I checked in. They have a very limited amount of microwaves that are available. No A/C, your stuck with whatever temperature they decide the room should be. If you have do eat in the restaurant it is overpriced for what you get.
Had a birthday party poolside for Grandson Perfect place for party as kids could swim and go down the water slide while parents felt safe lingering around the pool as the lifeguards protected their kids Food was great and the restaurant Chicago Joes is a perfect spot for all dining occasions Good food at a good value Definitely would recommend for all Thunder Bay visitors and residents
Very friendly staff that were dealing with a huge wedding party and yet paid attention to us as we checked in. The room was a long ;walk and there is only one small elevator that was constantly busy. The room was in need of renovation and the general appearance and ;decor of the hotel needs to be addressed Im sure there are places in Thunder Bay that are likewise in price and give better overall value.
On our way out west last week we stayed at this hotel and were very pleased. The location was not far from the highway, rooms were clean, large and front desk staff when we arrived were very friendly. If I had one complaint it was the front desk staff in the morning seemed more interested in her paperwork. The hotel is pet-friendly which was a plus. We cannot say enough about the incredible service we received from Jeff in the restaurant when we went there for breakfast. He is an outstanding employee, who went over and above to provide excellent service. Very friendly and helpful - thank you, Jeff! We would highly recommend this hotel!
This is an older building but they've done their best to refresh the rooms and conference rooms and modernize them. The best things about this hotel are its scrupulous cleanliness and universally pleasant staff, particularly in the onsite restaurant ( simple, hearty, casual dining) and Paige at the front desk. Do ask for an outward- facing room, if noisy kids bug you - the hotel had a central pool area with a massive slide, the main platform of which was directly outside my bedroom window. They shut the pool down right at 10 as promised but if I were an "early to bed" person, the noise would have irritated me.
