Econo Lodge Thunder Bay2.0 out of 5.0

This motel has a good location on the main drag of Thunder Bay. It is close to shopping and restaurants both fast food and nicer restaurants. It serves a good, basic, continental breakfast and the rooms are clean and have air conditioning, a fridge and microwave. There is also a room for guests to do laundry. Staff was friendly and helpful.
This was the worst travel experience I've ever had. Took incompetent clerk over 30 minutes to check in my prepaid reservation with only 2 customers ahead of me in line. Rude clerk had the nerve to not apologize to me for the wait and told me to "go to another hotel" if I didn't like the wait. Complained to manager who gave excuse that it was clerk's first time working at night. Room was filthy with stains all over carpet and bedding. What a depressing place!
Pet policy changed from advertised. Listed at $20 a stay and when registering, wanted 20 for each night of my stay. Complained to every person on the desk until it was as advertised. Then room was tiny, with noise from all around, sir confined was an old window one that was very loud. Close to shopping and water front, but maybe look at other hotels. At 100 a night, may find a better place to stay.
The only good thing that I can say about this hotel is that the clerk on the front desk was very friendly and helpful ... this is where the good ends especially for the price we paid... I mean seriously if it was a 50 special I would have expected what I got!! The room was smelly and stinky. The carpeting looked like it had never been cleaned. The air conditioner was so old it sounded like a jet engine roaring all night long - unfortunately it was a hot night and too noisy at night outside the door with smokers going in and out all night smoking at the "A" door to keep the windows open. Standard hotel continental breakfast .
This is a very ideal place to stay at in Thunder Bay. It is affordable, and its location is very desirable also, because it is in between Thunder Bay's southern downtown and its northern downtown (For those of you who don't know, Thunder Bay is a city that has a downtown in the southern part and another downtown in the northern part, instead of one downtown in the middle), and it is on the direct transit routes (or bus routes) to both downtowns. I don't drive, so I am totally dependent on public transportation when I travel.
Our tired and aching bodies arrived in Thunder Bay after a gruelling 16 hours first day of 20 day road trip. As we drove along summer capitals we have seen many places closed down and abandoned, changing world is now a reality. Hotel is a two storey and of course there was no elevator, so do bring up your baggage one by one. To be smart, make sure you ask for ground floor rooms if you are not able to climb stairs. Am not sure if tiredness put me to sleep quickest than I thought. They are ready at 6:00 am breakfast, waffle is our choice this time, thanks for the heavy breakfast but never again to stay in this hotel.
The place was stinky, sketchy and in a state of terrible disrepair. The ceiling in the washroom looked like it would cave in. It was noisy most of the night. I stayed with my mother and two boys on our drive to Alberta. I guess if you are a deep sleeper and don't mind the hotel's state then it would be ok. Personally I won't stay again. I knew from the price that it wouldnt be fantastic but I can't believe that Choice Hotels will admit to owning this property lol.
My husband and I travel to Saskatchewan 2-3 times a year and Thunder Bay is our stop over. We don't like to pay much for a hotel because we only sleep in it for a few hours, shower and hit the road. Our problem is that we travel with 2 small dogs, so our options are limited. We have stayed at this hotel a few times and have endured the smelly rooms, noisy nights, outrageous pet fee, littered outdoor property and sketchy area of town. To be fair, they offer an ok standard hotel breakfast. Regardless, our last stay will be exactly that. ..our last stay. I've decided that I, my husband and my dogs deserve better. I've found another hotel with a reasonable pet fee that I will pay more for and, hopefully, get good value for my money.
Do yourself a favour and pay a little bit more for a better room. Rooms smell very musty and the bathrooms are in serious need of work. Walls are very thin. You can clearly hear the people in the next room. Every toilet flushing and bathroom fan is audible in your room. Noisy guests. If you complain to the front desk they will basically tell you to go whistle. Breakfast is depressing. Weak coffee, stale pastry etc. If you sleep like a brick and don't mind a place to crash for the night you'll be fine. Otherwise spend the extra few bucks to stay at a nicer hotel, you'll thank yourself for it later.
I broke down in thunder bay have to get my truck fixed. Had to take a hotel, didnt get there till 5:30am still had to check out at 11 and pay full price. Walls are thin couldnt sleep from all the noise. Workers are loud in the morning and completely unapologetic.
