We had to extend our stay due to flight cancellation because of bad weather, we were able to keep the same room with no trouble. Staff was courteous and friendly!
Hotel is across the street from Museum of Natural History and close to Central Park with many restaurants close by.
Found this place through orbitz it was moderately priced for NYC standards. We just wanted a place to crash for the night after a Christmas party. We decided to walk, Even though subway was close enough to use. DFront desk staff were very "robotic" Gentleman at the 2nd floor breakfast who sat us was very friendly as well as the woman who sat us at the first floor restaurant.
The Excelsior was affordable and convenient on the upper west side. It has a rich elegance about it. The room was comfortable and classy. I would definitely return to this hotel next time I want to stay in Manhattan.
A well kept facility. Great breakfast buffet. Scrambled eggs not overcooked as they usually are in most buffet breakfasts
The place is run down and the staff is less than helpful. The place needs refurbishment in ever category to match its great location next to the Nat. History Museum.
we often stay at the Excelsior. However, this time we found the hotel dirty. It needs some sprucing up. As a matter of Fact, our room was not cleaned up when we returned after having been out of the room from 9 am until 3:00. Although they send a person to clean up before 4, what i did not like was them telling me (The people that i spoke to on the phone) that they had until 4 pm to clean the room. All they should have said was that we will try our best to accommodate you ASAP. This is a more client- centred approach. My son, who was in another room with his family also found the hotel dirty and preferred other hotels in the neighbourhood which are cleaner.
always a great place to stay. classic 1920s hotel in the very best location.
Great hotel, great location except that there isn't a good diner nearby. Room was very comfortable and spacious, and the shampoo etc had a lovely aroma. Wonderful restaurant (Calle Ocho) on the first floor. Staff was mostly friendly and accommodating.
The hotel was extremely clean. The location was farther out but worth it. However, we were in the 3rd floor and there was smoking going on even though the faculty was supposed to be non smoking. We told the man at front desk and asked to move is and he said there was nothing available. They should have knocked in people's doors to see who the culprit was. He said he would get back to us but he never did. Also their wifi stunk and we could never get connected in our room. We needed internet to book our NYC activities. So we went downstairs to have the girl book is and get tickets to 9/11 museum so we could guarantee a time to go and she couldn't even connect to help us. She was terrible! The restaurant was extremely overpriced in the hotel. Cheaper to eat in diners around the corner or go to Starbucks.
all was as our previous stays will recommend to friends
Our room was incredibly hot and when you turn on the A/C it comes on but then about 5 minutes later it changes over to heat and starts making burning noises like water hitting a hot pan and you have to get up and turn it off. We called front desk and they said its because its an old system that uses steam and that we can run the fan only to keep that from happening but I was always too warm.
Everything about our stay was very good. One complaint we had was there was no coffee maker in the rooms, or coffee available in the lobby. Also the shuttle service recommended by your hotel was terrible. It took nearly two hours from the time our plane landed to get us to the hotel. As compensation, we were upgraded to s suite which was great. I also enjoyed getting a USA TODAY. Overall, it was great.
I stayed at this hotel for its location and paid for a Deluxe King room. I will never stay there again. The staff is extremely unfriendly and even rude and offers NO apologies for the hotel's inadequacies, which include: the construction/painting crew directly outside the window ledge of the bedroom from 9am-5pm the broken elevator (leaving just one elevator for all 16 floors of guests) not providing for any coffee or tea making in the room, not even a complimentary bottle of water. Instead, the staff tells you to use a coffee dispensing machine in the lobby (wholly inadequate) or go to the Starbucks a block away. Lousy value for the money.
it is clean, convenient and of great location. close to the park, museum and subway
We stayed here for a night while exploring New York, and it was a great choice. The location is fantastic -- a block from Central Park and the museum of Natural History. There's a subway stop on the corner that can take you downtown. The room and hotel were very nice. Nothing out of the ordinary. The room was a good size, the bed was comfy. No complaints. For an older hotel, everything was up to date and clean. I would definitely stay here again, mostly for the killer UWS location.
Clean helpful, professional staff great location for my needs very comfortable
The room was a little smaller then I am use to seeing out of hotel but we also didn't spend much time in the room. Also the internet is not free and several items in the rooms were not working but were immediately fixed when we notified to hotel staff.
Everything was enjoyable from the staff to rooms. Had no meals at hotel.
This hotel exceeded my expectations -- booking a hotel in Manhattan is a crapshoot! Our room was a reasonable size, the bathroom was lovely (full bath!), and we even had a closet. Full wall of windows made for nice light and if it weren't for the scaffolding out front we would have had an awesome view. I would definitely stay there again. Right next to the subway station and Natural History Museum.
