Brookside Art Annual

Started over 20 years ago, the Brookside Art Annual is a thriving contribution to the many festivals that call Kansas City home. Produced by the Brookside Business Association, this art show is consistently ranked among the top 25 in the country, making it a great event for any art lover. Children's events are hosted on Saturday and Sunday, so you can ensure the whole family gets a healthy dose of arts and culture.

Vine Jazz and Blues Festival

Previously known as Rhythm and Ribs, the Vine Jazz and Blues Festival was renamed to associate historical significance with the city. A town that made huge contributions to the rise of jazz in the 1920s, Kansas City celebrates its heritage every year in the fall. True to the event's roots, the culture of Midwestern cuisine is cheered alongside the music festival. Visiting during the Vine Jazz and Blues Festival is a great way to get an authentic overview of the culture Kansas City thrives on.

Climate and best time to visit

Kansas City sees a wide range of temperatures, with some extremes on both sides. Even during the winter, the temperatures fluctuate between freezing and mild, sometimes seeing temperatures of -1 degree Fahrenheit. The city even gets snowfall a few times a year.

Summers are hot and humid, which can be uncomfortable for those who aren't used to hotter climates. If you visit during this time, be sure to keep hydrated. Temperatures in July stay above 90 degrees. These extreme temperatures during summer and winter make visiting during spring and fall best for enjoying Kansas City.

Traveling to Kansas City

The area has its own international airport (MCI), which provides shuttle services to many downtown Kansas City hotels. Another transportation method, one that proves to be an adventure on its own, is the Amtrak trains. They make daily runs to and from St. Louis and then to Chicago, connecting three historically great cities if you're on a longer trip. Alternatively, buses are also available from surrounding cities.

Hotel costs

Kansas City hotels have a favorable price range year-round, and if you book far enough in advance, you can always find deals for the best areas, like the highly rated hotels downtown. The cost of rooms often depends on advance booking, so planning ahead will help you save money. A hotel with a fair amount of amenities will run you just north of $100 a night. Plan to spend more on hotel rates and parking if festivals, holidays or other events are going on during your time of travel.
