My daughter is a junior at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, located on the edge of Hayes Valley. For the last three years I have struggled to find economic and safe lodging in the immediate area. The room was comfortable and clean. It was on the interior of the building, which meant zero street noise. There was a constant low hum, but it did not prevent me from getting a good nights sleep. I never had to wait for the bathroom and the facilities were very clean. The common room is beautiful. I did not check out the breakfast, as I had to leave. I will definitely be back!
This was my first time staying at a hotel with shared baths. I was apprehensive about it at first but never had an issue throughout my stay. I was visiting SF for a workshop and needed a place for 5 nights. The bed is comfortable and the complimentary breakfast is great. It was cool outside so it seems they turned on the heater which made the room too warm and there was no way for me to manage that. As for location, it's on a busy street so definitely noise in the early morning and through out the day/night. But if that doesn't bother you it's a great location with restaurants and shops everywhere. The trainstation is nearby as well. As a solo female traveler I felt safe and comfortable since it's a keyed entrance, bed and breakfast style but note it is also old so be prepared to carry your luggage up stairs. Overall it was a great place to stay for a reasonable price.
Do not book with the Hayes Valley Inn. Quality of living and customer service is a rip-off for the price. Any type of shuttle service with them is a scam - DO NOT book through them. If you do end up staying here (which you absolutely avoid), book your hotel shuttle/cab independently. Their customer service stole the money deposit from me and did not pay the shuttle company. The cab company proceeded to demand money from us after dropping off at the airport because they did not receive a payment from the hotel. Hayes Valley Inn only paid deposit back after lengthy complaint via phone. They are not worth your time or money. Book anywhere else.
For the location, price, and our specific travelling needs, the hotel was exceptional. The staff let us store our luggage all day even after checkout while we wandered the city. Everything was exceptionally clean and the hotel was very quiet at all times even with shared bathroom amenities. The price was exceptional for being centrally located to the entire city - at the top of the Mission District and a short Lyft to all points in the city. For a hotel with shared toilet/shower facilities, we never noticed an issue of waiting or need when we were ready to use. We did not eat the breakfast so cannot comment. Would highly recommend to young travelers looking for budget, clean stay in the center of SF. The two twin beds room for the price is perfect for two people just looking for somewhere clean and safe to sleep on a trip where the city, restaurants, bars, sports, and sites are the main purpose. The BART is a little farther walk than the map would make it seem - however the hotel's location was easy for rideshare pickup access. Bars and restaurants in the area are excellent - we capped off a night at Smuggler's Cove a few blocks down for example.
The room is spacious, and clean. If you are nice to the hotel receptionist, she will probably allow you to check in earlier if there is room prepared. Cannot complain. Actually big enough for two paxs. Shower and toilets are co-shared that I find there’s no much issues. Hayes Valley has a few new hip places to eat and shop too.
If you are looking for top-notch hotel where you will stay in a big room with all the facilities in the room - look elsewhere. Hayes Valley Inn is a "budget" level hotel where you pay under $200 and get a tiny room with shared bathroom and shower on the floor. That being said, the hotel itself was very clean and the staff was super helpful and polite. Breakfast was included in my rate and was actually pretty decent. They had bagels and toasts, cold cuts and cheese, juice, coffee and cereal. Location is also excellent with lots of restaurants and bars on the same block or just down the street. If you are a frugal traveller who doesn't care about sharing a shower with others on the floor, but still prefers cleanliness and location - this place would be great for you.
This is a basic bed and breakfast type accommodations with shared bathroom. With that as my expectation, it should get extra marks. Bed was comfy, room was quiet, place was clear, full time receptionist, bright airy breakfast room with food I could eat. Just remember to bring the soap from your room to the shower. If you want a hotel, pay for a hotel. if you want an inexpensive clean, safe bed and are prepared to compromise on things like no en suite, a small room and being in an older building (well maintained) this is the place to stay.
The location is good, the breakfast was nice and the staff were very friendly. Booked because I was told via a third party booking site that they had an airport shuttle, but unfortunately they only have an airport shuttle to the airport. It was no problem to get a cab, and the civic centre train stop is an easy and safe walk away. However, the walls are extremely thin and you absolutely everything that is happening in the adjoining rooms. It's also a little expensive - but I guess that's SF?
Had a pleasant room in the Annex. MANY stairs to climb, both in the Inn proper and the Annex. I liked the European ambience (similar to a small, 2 -3 star European hotel...shared BR, light morning brek. in the common room) The halls and common rooms generally warm and a bit stuffy....the brek. room definitely in need of some kind of shade from the sun. HEAVY security gate, difficult to open, particularly if managing luggage (or a cane!) The street is lively, which I enjoyed. Staff young and not well versed in good hotel PR.
This was my second time staying at Hayes Valley Inn. I had a better room on the same floor. My room faced the street on the corner of Hayes and Gough. I stayed for 5 days including the weekend. With restaurants and bars right undereneath and all around, i would suggest ear plugs. You can get them right from the Walgreen's a block away, that's if your sensitive to noise. I honestly didn't need them. No real issues getting in and out of the shower or bathroom. Housekeeping staff super nice and sweet. I felt comfortable and at ease in my room. The rooms are nothing fancy, so don't expect anything modern... but they are cozy. The walls are paper thin. Costumer service in the office could be better. The staff while i was there seem perdominitely young(for the most part). One young lady(i didnt get her name)she was pleasant, friendly and nice. She worked a few 3-11 shifts and maybe one morning shift. She stuck out to me. Not that anyone else was rude. Again, this was my second solo trip to SF and Hayes Valley Inn offers what i need for a good price. Until i have a bad experience or feel the need to not share a bathroom, i will return again.
