Find culture and scenic views in Pittsburgh

The Ohio, Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet in the great city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Thanks to Andrew Carnegie and his numerous expansion programs, the city was once the world's leading producer of steel. Its towering skyscrapers now house American tech companies and a thriving financial sector.

The downtown area of the city bears the hallmarks of a revitalization that began in the 1960s and continues today. The downtown waterfront that was once home to giant steel mills is now filled with green spaces, civic buildings and architecturally important high-rises. Each Pittsburgh neighborhood is unique, but remains connected to the others through efficient rapid transit networks.

Things to do
Historical attractions and museums

One of the most scenic historical attractions is the Duquesne Incline railroad. It has been in operation since 1877 and features two original cable cars to serve Mount Washington and Duquesne Heights. The upper section is a wonderful site for photographs of the cityscape below.

The Carnegie Museum of Art holds an impressive collection of American and European paintings, sculptures and other art. The Andy Warhol Museum features the works of the legendary pop artist who was born on Pittsburgh's Northern Side. Finally, the Frick Art and Historical Center is a combination of museums and historical buildings at the East End of town. It displays a variety of art from the 16th to 18th centuries.

Amusement parks and family attractions

One of America's oldest amusement parks can be found in Pittsburgh. Kennywood was founded in 1898 and continues to entertain families with its wide range of rides. Take a spin on the old-fashioned carousel or enjoy the latest technology of a steel looping roller coaster.

Animal lovers will enjoy a visit to the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium. The zoo houses thousands of animals, including 22 endangered species, and a two-story aquarium.

Shopping

One of the best places to shop in Pittsburgh is the Strip District. Formally occupied by railroads and warehouses, this is now one of the liveliest areas in the city. This 1/2-square-mile site is filled with ethnic food shops, produce markets and sidewalk vendors.

Sports

Anyone in the western region of Pennsylvania is familiar with Pittsburgh’s leading sports teams. Football fans in the area are dedicated to the Steelers. In the fall, attend a home game at Three Rivers Stadium. In the spring, enjoy a baseball game and cheer for the Pirates. Hockey enthusiasts can follow the Penguins as well.

Dining

An eclectic range of influences can be found in the cuisine that is most popular in the city. A favorite place to eat for locals is Primanti Brothers Shop in the Strip District, where tasty sandwiches are served with a topping of French fries. Nearby is a fine Italian restaurant owned by television chef Lidia Bastianich. One of the best burgers can be found at Tessaro's in Bloomfield.

Where to stay

Pittsburgh is a large metropolitan area, so it offers numerous hotels suited for vacations and business trips. Pittsburgh hotels run the gamut from large luxury suites to boutique accommodations. The Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel offers top amenities in the downtown area. It is housed in the iconic Fulton Building and offers some of the best city views. Room rates average around $300 a night. For a fraction of the cost, budget travelers can choose a chain hotel like the Days Inn.
