The rooms are small but comfortable. The entire staff is friendly and helpful. There is a small bar in the lobby and you can bring your drinks up to the rooftop deck with a spectacular view of the Empire State Building.

I managed to check in late, but was greeted by friendly staff that made my check in experience easy and welcoming. The lobby was very chic and modern with great music and pretty nice bar area with a great happy hour special. When I got to my room, I noticed the chic decor was also found in the rooms despite the building being an older brownstone. The room was clean and acceptable by my standards, but it was on the smaller side of things from my previous hotel experience. However, I was travelling alone so the size of the room didn't bother me at all, but it may feel a little cozy if you stay with a partner. The rooftop patio was the main selling feature of this place and I spent some time up there enjoying the views and getting some fresh air. It was a great place to bring food and drink to enjoy the views, but I wish there was a bar up there for convenience. Unfortunately there was no pool, but there was a fitness center in the basement that is typical of a hotel. I thought the housekeeping staff was okay because it seems like they started cleaning rooms relatively early so it made it hard to sleep in or get ready without getting a knock on the door or hearing them in the hallway. They did fix my broken bathroom light when I reported it. On my last night, I heard people in the hall talking out loud and slamming doors in the middle of the night. Please be considerate of others because these spaces are confined so it seems louder in the rooms. Not hotel's fault though!

This hotel is in a great location. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. Hotel is starting to show some wear and tear. They need to replace hallway carpeting and some cosmetic work in the rooms. Overall I like this place a lot

I needed to ask 2 times to have the bed sheets completely replaced. Room service did not replace shampoo, soap, towel every time an item was missing.

Room was ship shape; it felt like someone's passion project was to turn this apartment building into pleasant but reasonably priced hotel rooms. Our room was adorably wee: imagine a hipster ship's cabin decorated by Ikea. In a good way. We were reminded of hotels where we have stayed in Europe. The decor was only slightly worn. Like, one of the picture frames and a nick on it. This had no impact on our enjoyment, which was considerable. The location was ideal -- Chelsea is a very authentic neighborhood. It has interesting restaurants, co-op grocery stores and bars, and many old standbys as well. Like the best parts of New York, it combines the daring and interesting with the homey and comfortable. -- and it is a convenient and central part of Manhattan. The staff was very friendly, accommodated all requests, an made some excellent recommendations. We didn't even have time to enjoy happy hour in the 80s-retro-chic lobby or check out the rooftop bar. But we will be back.

we had a wonderful stay at the GEM!!! Everything was great. The only concern was the small size of the rooms did not allow for even a chair. You had to be on bed if you wanted to be in the room for even a short period of time. We took full advantage of the lobby seating areas however and really enjoyed our stay.

Like its name, this little hotel is a gem! The staff was friendly and professional. The rooms were small but very clean. I will definitely be back!

First of all, if you're going in knowing and expecting that the rooms are small and cozy, and you don't need all the bells and whistles of a fancy hotel, then I'd say the GEM is a great hotel! The front desk staff was very polite and friendly, and made some helpful suggestions for our stay. The cleaning lady was wonderful, and we tipped her well for not just her service but her friendliness, too. And the bellhop guys were nice and helpful, too. Like I said, it's a small room but we were only there to sleep -- the rest of the time, we were out and about exploring the cuteness of the Chelsea area. And the room rate was very decent -- the savings we made was put toward our meals, cocktails, manis/pedis, cab rides, etc. as we explored and enjoyed the area. For the low rate and friendly staff, I'd definitely come back again!

Very very tiny rooms, hardly any amenities. Decent price, good for a quick trip alone. The location is the best selling point-easy to find, on subway lines, restaurants and shopping are close. The hotel itself is an afterthought.

My room was small, but very clean and comfortable. I felt that I got good value for my money. I wanted to be in Chelsea, so this location was perfect for me. The staff (at registration and housekeeping) was very friendly, polite, personable, and helpful. I love the shampoo and bath gel dispensers in the shower (which was REALLY nice), and the free bottle of water every day was also a nice touch. I recommend this hotel.

I don't typically stay in NYC (live in an outer suburb) but this was just what I needed for a place to lay my head after a long conference and night out on the town. The rooms are small but very efficient. Not necessarily a place for long term stay or for someone with a lot of luggage. But I was quite content. Our room was not located near a street (no view) either so it was quiet, which I like. Pricey - but hey, it's NYC. Overall a great place and I'd stay here again. Oh and a fantastic neighborhood near the subway and High Line.

The hotel is always clean and comfortable, even though the rooms are small (as expected in Manhattan). The staff was always very helpful in recommending travel routes and restaurants. Since I really like Chelsea, this is an ideal hotel.

The hotel was in the process of renovation, which might have been a problem but wasn't, because everyone working there was so pleasant and responsive. I was new to New York, and the hotel staff were extremely generous with their time and suggestions. The accommodations were clean and comfortable, with lots of places for our new millennium need for plugs! The room was small, too small for even a desk, which would be a problem for many. The insulation was poor- sounds were everywhere. All in all, I'd stay again, but I'd bring something to lean my computer on in the bed and ear plugs!

Perfectly located hotel, right over Foragers grocery and restaurant. Short walk to Chelsea galleries, and Bottinos sandwich shop, right by the A C E. Comfortable, clean, small rooms.
