The renovated room was moldy and not nice at all. We got a bit better one the next day though. Room was clean. Food was average, restaurants were better but hard to book as many are closed several days a week. Beach is nice. Generally we found it expensive for what it offers.

I think the differences in experience depend on if you are part of their privilege program or not, or what avenue you took to book your vacation. The privileged group had certain foods, beverages, restaurants and even tables that we weren't allowed to access. Their living quarters even looked completely different, and was what I saw more often on their website. The room, although very clean, was in okay condition, cracks in the walks and ceiling, worn out furniture and mirrors, and not really what you see in the photos. The food was very good in the main restaurant, and had better Mexican food than their Mexican restaurant. The staff were very friendly but very few went above and beyond to make sure your needs were met; simple requests like chairs at the beach were met with "it's not possible" and there were very few staff working around the pool and beach areas. Interestingly enough, there was not much entertainment throughout the day until the Monday we left, we wondered if it was a way to introduce new guests and then would putter out throughout the week. We have stayed at a few other all-inclusives and although we made the most of our time here, it did not live up to the others, especially within the same price range.

Hotel/Maroma beach is lovely - hotel clears seaweed if it occurs. Rooms (3319) are a good size but lack views and are in 3 block complexes. Only 1 large pool but so noisy, not peaceful. Hotel needs an alternative quiet area pool. All inclusive food / drinks were ok but difficult to book themed restaurants. This hotel is large so it is catering for the masses unless you upgrade to Privilege or Exclusive grades. Would not advise for disabled or elderly guests - long walks from rooms to facilities.

The only good thing about the resort is the beach and we had one decent meal at the Steakhouse. The staff is trying their best, but they fail due to lack of resources and extremely poor management. The whole resort is outdated and smelly. The furniture is old and smelly, straight from the lobby. The rooms are in very bad condition, mine smelled like mold and sewer the whole time I was there. And so did my friends’ rooms ..and we had 7 rooms. Not one was decent. The buffet is poorly staffed and they have ridiculous rules where they won’t let you sit with your friends even if the table is big enough, asking to accommodate bigger groups is not even possible There are only 3 bars, one pool. And the pool is mostly for children This was not the cheapest of resorts, so if you have the money to spend, go somewhere else! Management needs to be changed and they need to make some serious investments in infrastructure and facilities

Terrible experience with front desk person Mauricio regarding our room. Unable to change our room even though he said they would try the next day .lied and chanced his story so we asked to speak to manager . The room smelled like mold and all they did was spray air freshner . The manger Rogerlio was useless at acknowledging our issues and complaints . We were stuck in the moldy room for 4 nights . Declined to refund us our money to go elsewhere . My sister had health issues and it made her cough non stop . The food was hit and miss . The dinner at Bloved was awful too salty and well done steak was red and raw. Buffet food was hot and miss . . Never go back

Catalonia Playa Maroma – Honest Review (Playa Maroma, Riviera Maya, Mexico) Stay: December 19–24, 2025 Room Type: Premium Room Group: 5 adults and 1 toddler (3 years old) This is a very beautiful resort in a lush rainforest setting, but Americans should understand exactly what they’re getting before booking. Location & Scenery: The rainforest environment is absolutely stunning and was the biggest positive surprise. The property feels very tropical, with lush greenery everywhere. We saw animals occasionally running around, which added to the experience. For anyone concerned, the animals keep their distance and are not a problem at all. Pools & Common Areas: The pool is excellent—large, clean, and well maintained. Some areas are close to 8 feet deep, which is great for adults but something to be aware of if you have small children. Common areas were consistently clean and well cared for. Housekeeping & Room Comfort: Housekeeping was excellent and came every day like clockwork. Rooms were cleaned thoroughly and quickly. Beds were comfortable. The AC and ceiling fans worked very well and kept the room cool at all times. Walls are somewhat thin, but noise was manageable overall. Food & Drinks (Biggest Weakness): The food is where this resort falls short for Americans. The buffet was very disappointing—bland overall and heavily focused on pork. Rooms was spotless clean. Room in the building #3 was super noisy 8am to 10pm because of a construction nearby. It was hard to stay in the room for relax or work during the daytime. My advice is to bring a spray against insects(mosquitoes), and afterbite medication. Staff is great, helpful and nice, no problem at all.
