Disappointing Stay at John Muir Lodge I rarely leave reviews, but our experience at John Muir Lodge was poor enough that I felt compelled to share. The room was dirty and the carpet was visibly filthy and looked like it hadn’t been deep-cleaned in ages. The bed was terrible: soft, saggy, and extremely uncomfortable. It felt like sleeping on a worn-out sponge. The walls were paper-thin, so we heard everything from neighboring rooms and the hallway, making it hard to relax or sleep. On top of all that, the staff seemed uninterested and unhelpful. Basic customer service skills were clearly lacking, and any questions or concerns we had were met with indifference. For the price and location, I expected at least a clean and quiet room with a decent bed — unfortunately, the lodge failed on all fronts. Would not recommend.

Motel6-like in the most beautiful place in CA

I am OK to pay $300+ a night for the privilege of staying in one of the most stunningly beautiful places in California. But I'd expect some minimal quality services to match the price. Yes, the check-in staff was super friendly, but the beds were worn out and uncomfortable. We didn't come for the food either, but oh boy, the ordering system and the food quality was something else. And this in late September. I dread to think what summer busy season would be like. But I can't stress enough, how stunningly beautiful King's Canyon is, with magnificent drives and hikes and sceneries, easily rivalling Yosemite. Five stars for the weekend experience, but alas, only two stars for the accommodations.

OK

It was clean and fine but very basic. There wasn’t really outdoor space to sit outside as the photos suggest. Most of the chairs faced the parking lot. The restaurant was a horrible cafeteria Would not stay here again.

We loved the location and that’s solely why we wanted to stay here. Staff is great, it is limited in staff but they are very attentive once they’re available. Check in and out was easy. Rooms were clean. They also have a tv which can be rare in National Park lodging. It was a great in between to visit Kings Canyon and Sequoia. We are also really close to Big Stump, General Grant and Panorama View. Overall great time during our National Park venture, and close to amenities.

We loved our stay with one major issue. The location was great, we arrived late afternoon and were still able to go down and enjoy the General Grant tree and grave. Dinner and breakfast at the restaurant were great. The lobby was fun and inviting. The staff friendly and helpful. The one major issue was the mattress. When you sat on the bed you sunk almost to the floor. Sleeping was interesting. You need to get new mattresses.

It was perfect for is. Location is ~midway between RoadsEnd in KC and Crescent Meadow in Sequoia, allowing timely access to early starts in both parks. Beds are mediocre, but hardly something to complain about for any seasoned outdoorsman. Easy access to ice and water. No a/c if that matters, because it’s comfortable enough in the evenings…only an issue for anyone staying in the room during the day (why would anyone??). All in all, I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

(52øThe staff was wonderful and the rooms were clean and in great condition. Travelers should know, however, that if you are on the second floor there are no elevators. Also, none of the rooms are air conditioned. There is a fan in the room and that with an open window is the cooler. I was there in September and the nights were cool 52ºF, so it wasn't bad. I don't know how it would be in the summer months.

The John Muir Lodge was perfect for my trip to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The area around the lodge is very quiet. This is especially true if you get out at 4:30 in the morning for a sunrise hike, and you can feel how quiet and dark it is in the parking lot. It feels like the whole world is asleep. In fact, the only issue I really had was finding a place to park after about 8:45 PM because the people who stay at the John Muir Lodge are all in their rooms by that time. You don't have people staying up late and making noise. The Grant Grove visitor center, restaurant, gift shop, and market are all about a 3.5-minute walk away (I timed it), which was very convenient. And if you need a sunset every night, Panoramic Point is only a 2-mile drive away, which was also convenient. Panoramic Point is also good for sunrise; I had the sunrise there to myself on a Tuesday morning. Sequoia is only an hour away for most of its attractions. I'll grant that the Lodgepole market is much better than the Grant Grove market (and the Wuksachi Lodge is better than the Grant Grove restaurant for breakfast), but you also have many more people down in Sequoia. There is also more of a bear problem in Sequoia than up in Grant Grove.
