The resort property is beautiful, including a wonderful view of the coast and a tranquil 2-mile hike through redwoods. However, there is a lot of deferred maintenance on the property, which is showing its age. On a more personal note, we felt nickle-and-dimed by additional services that would be considered standard at other resorts at this price point. Overall, this has the feel of a past-its-prime resort that is resting on the laurels of an amazing location/property.
Just before Christmas, I visited this location with someone dear to my heart who I had not seen in a lifetime. We wanted to commiserate one-on-on. But it happened to be the day of the annual Santa Breakfast. Kids were running everywhere, overcome with excitement at the prospect of Claus. I asked the hostess if they had somewhere private. Graciously, she opened a separate room just for the two of us. We chatted and enjoyed breakfast in quiet, while overlooking the beautiful grounds of the resort.
We stayed here for one night on our roadtrip through California. The park is well maintained and beautifully located in the hills of Santa Cruz. The resort, aside from the pool, also offers extra wellness packages for an extra fee. Of course it has a restaurant too. Unfortunately this restaurant looks extremely dull and has a very uninspired, yet expensive menu. Breakfast will set you back 30 dollars. The rooms and beds are huge and the aesthetic is quite modern. So the rooms do look lovely when first entered. So does the bathroom. However, quite quickly we noticed that it'd be better if they had made the rooms smaller and the bathroom bigger. The bathroom is really impractical with hardly any space to walk around, a shower that feels like being attacked with a garden hose and 'bathtub' that couldn't handle the water pressure, meaning we feared it's overflowing while the shower was on. I put bathtub in quotation marks because it was impossible to sit in in as the sides were way to low. I do not expect a tub in every hotel but I think it's essential for a spa. Aside from that rooms were clean, the beds were lovely and the view over the forest was nice. I guess it really comes down to what you value the most in a hotel. You could love it or be a bit disappointed, like I was.
The hotel is in a beautiful location. That is the only redeeming quality it has. The restaurant is understaffed and as a result you have to wait for ages for a drink, food or a bill. Our room smelled musty like BO. The bathrooms have sliding doors that are not latched at the bottoms. So it’s like using a saloon door. 😳 The AC didn’t work properly and on our last day the hot water stopped working. The floors are thin so even if your upstairs neighbors walk softly it’s like elephants dancing. There are many other nice, similarly priced options that I would stay at instead of this hotel in the future.
We arrived to a strong scent of mold in our room. So, we opened all the windows and large patio door to air it out. Since I have a remote history of asthma that had not flared in several years (such that I no longer needed medications) I stayed out of the room while it was airing out. After an hour I returned to the room, and within 15 minutes, my lungs felt like they were shutting down. I called the front desk to see if they could find another room. All of the staff were very nice and accommodating. They showed me 3 other rooms, all having the same strong mold scent. The workers there said they could not smell it, but acknowledged my symptoms and allowed me to leave without charge. After I returned home, I had to take several days off work, and was placed on steroids and nebulizer therapy for several weeks. If you decide to stay at the Chaminade, the staff is great, but please ensure your lungs are very healthy beforehand. (By the way, I also informed management. They said they had never had any complaints about this issue before, but that they would look into it.)
We stayed for three nights at the Chaminade Resort. It s beautiful place nested inside. But left disappointed with the service. For the resort fees and taxes and the higher price of almost 300$, the service was definitely not up to the mark. Also the room amenities were pretty basic compared to the normal 3 star hotel. Two disposable cheap cups when the booking is for group of 4 that too not changed everyday. And when you call the restaurant or room service there was hardly a time when the phone was picked up, it was really frustrating. The spa was good with good amenities and service was much better. Even basic water was not provided. The property is not worth the price they charge and services far below services.
This is great venue for our 70+ people retreat. Even though there were other groups there at the same time, I felt like we were the only ones there. Also, the surrounding forest is beautiful. I am looking forward to next year's retreat there.
I love the Chaminade for the woodsy setting and the stylish retro decor. I was disappointed this visit by the service. When I arrived I was told that I signed up for the package with a free wine tasting rather than the package with the free $50 at the restaurant I was expecting. When I asked if I could switch it, they said no. Reading other reviews, it seems the management is rather rigid. And there are quite a few hidden fees (a $36/night resort fee + $20 taxes adds $50/night).
I booked 2 rooms here through a third party website, arrived there at 8 pm with my 8-month pregnant friend who really needed to go to her room and rest. They made us wait 1 hour at the register because they said they couldn't find our reservation. However, the guy showed me a spreadsheet with our names in it. They clearly had our reservation. I had payed 170 for each room 2 weeks prior to our stay. The next morning I get a receipt under my door for $184 charge on my credit card + $36 resort fee!? I go to the reception again and ask about it. The receptionist tells me that the $184 will not be charged, and not to worry about it. We stayed there for 1 night and wasted 2 hours of our stay talking to the receptionists, and when I asked for 30 mins late checkout, they said NO!!! Later I saw all these extra charges on my credit card. So a trip that was supposed to be relaxing wasted me hours talking about the charges and talking to my credit card company about the extra charges!!! Without these problems, I would have enjoyed staying there because it is beautiful with nice hiking trails around (which we had no time to do).
Chaminade was an amazing wedding venue! Angela Edmond was wonderful to work with throughout the whole planning process and she was a great support on our wedding weekend itself. The venue was beautiful, the staff was professional, and it was easy to coordinate since they handled all the rentals, catering, drinks, etc. They usually host multiple weddings per weekend, so they know what they're doing!
