Downtown Miami is where culture and beach life meet

Miami is Florida's cultural capital, where you'll find some of the best shopping, dining and entertainment south of New York, and Downtown Miami is the city's beating heart. Home to more than five million inhabitants, this is an area that champions both work and play. Beyond the Business District, visitors can find inspiration at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, see big name acts at the American Airlines Arena and go on a shopping spree at Macy’s.

Things to see and do

Downtown Miami is comprised of five neighborhoods, each with a unique flair: the CBD, or Central Business District; Brickell, known for its financial institutions and upscale shopping; Omni, home to numerous hotels and theaters; Park West, which has most of Downtown Miami's nightclubs; and the Miami Jewelry District, where you'll find dozens of jewelers and assorted gem dealers.

Historic District

Downtown Miami's fifth neighborhood, the Historic District, is home to 60 buildings of interest built between 1896 and 1974. Walk around and encounter Art Deco, Bungalow, Moderne, and Classical Revival architectural styles spread out across more than 125 historic buildings.

Parks and beaches

What would a trip to Miami be without checking out its world-famous beaches? Downtown Miami boasts Historic Virginia Beach Key Park, one of Miami's best kept secrets. Although you will have to park your vehicle a short walk away from the beach, it's worth the walk to avoid the huge crowds that form on Miami Beach. On any given day, there might be just a few dozen or few hundred visitors, so guests get the beach practically to themselves. Head to the other side of the island, and you can spend the afternoon exploring the park's bike trails.

On the mainland, head north to Bayfront Park, which includes a large amphitheater for plays and musical festivals. Just south of Brickell lies Simpson Park with its beautiful landscaping and nature trails.

Upscale shopping

Jewelry, clothing, furniture and art: in Downtown Miami, you'll find it all. Along with big-name retailers, many boutiques and stores feature imports that you won't find anywhere else, making for a nearly endless browsing experience.

Travel information

Flying into town, Downtown Miami is a short 10-minute drive from Miami International Airport (MIA), but Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is only a little farther away. Interstate 95 takes visitors north to Orlando and Jacksonville, and Tampa and Naples can be accessed by hopping on the Tamiami Trail. Once situated, you can use the Metrorail to visit the rest of the city, and if you're so inclined, you won't have any trouble securing a taxi.

Best time to visit

The average high in January is a comfortable 76 degrees Fahrenheit, and the average water temperature ranges from 71 to 86 degrees throughout the year. For the lowest rates and most comfortable temperatures, plan your trip in March or April. Or to avoid the Spring Break crowds, aim for a booking in late September through November.

Where to stay

Whether you want to enjoy Downtown Miami's marvelous dining, or explore the miles of surprisingly quiet beaches, Downtown Miami hotels put you within walking distance of anything you want to see or do during your visit.

Central Business District

As a key center for Miami business, Downtown Miami regularly attracts consultants, company officials and other professionals, but even if you're on vacation, you'll find plenty of recreational activities just across the Miami South Channel. The Hyatt Regency Miami is right next door to the Convention Center, and offers easy access to the Bayside Marketplace for dining and shopping.

Omni District

Miami Marriot Hotel Biscayne Bay is just one of the impressive skyscrapers that create the skyline of this cosmopolitan area. With 31 floors of style and modern facilities, the hotel is near the Port of Miami, and guests can dine at the on-site Catch Bar and Grill.
