Relax and explore historic Fort Myers, Florida

From its picture-perfect beaches to its newly restored downtown, Fort Myers offers something exciting around every corner. This classic Florida beach town recalls a bygone era when the pace of life was slower, and there was room for relaxation every day. When you visit, you can spend your time playing on the area's white sand beaches, get back to nature on the barrier islands, tour historic sites or simply explore the town.

Where to go
Beaches and islands

Fort Myers' gorgeous Gulf beaches are a major draw. Pristine barrier islands are found just offshore. Snorkeling, parasailing, and sailing are all popular activities, and Sanibel and Captiva Islands have world-class shelling. Those looking for the ultimate getaway shouldn't miss Pine Island—the island doesn't allow cars but instead has miles of winding nature trails and unbeatable ocean views.

Visiting the past

Henry Ford and Thomas Edison both had winter homes on the Caloosahatchee River near Fort Myers. Today, the area adjacent to their homes is called the Edison and Ford Winter Estates and features over 20 acres of botanical gardens, historic buildings and the Edison Ford Museum.

If you want to go even further into the past, Useppa Island has archeological sites and museums where you can view artifacts left by the Paleo-Indians who settled the area as early as 8,000 B.C. Later, the island was claimed by Spanish, Cuban and American governments and was a battleground in the Seminole Wars.

Downtown Fort Myers

Fort Myers' newly renovated River District is home to the area's historic downtown. The neighborhood has over 60 gorgeous historic buildings and is the city's nightlife center. Seafood and Cuban cuisine are especially popular dining options, and dancing well into the night is a favorite local pastime.

When to visit

Southern Florida is mild all year long, so every season is a great time for a visit. Summer is best for enjoying the ocean to the fullest, although sailing and scuba diving continue well into the winter. Fall and spring are lovely in Fort Myers, and these seasons are both significantly less crowded than summer, except during Spring Break. Winter is a quieter time, but if you're looking for relaxed solitude, a beach vacation in January would be perfect.

The temperature rarely dips below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, even in the dead of winter, but be sure to bring a jacket and some warm clothing for the occasional chilly evening if you visit outside the summer season. Fort Myers is home to many seasonal festivals, and the most famous is the Edison Festival—Florida's largest nighttime parade. This fantastic procession happens every February, and features a Parade of Lights to honor one of the area's most famous residents and an electricity pioneer, Thomas Edison.

How to get there

If you're traveling to Fort Myers by air, you can fly into either Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), 10.5 miles away, or Charlotte County Airport (PGD), 20.5 miles away. If you're planning to drive, the city is right off I-75 from the north or south. From the east, Highway 80 is your best route.

Where to stay

If you want to stay within the city of Fort Myers, downtown is the place to be. This area combines affordable accommodations with a wealth of dining and entertainment options. Hotels along the Caloosahatchee River also often have excellent views and are great for a romantic getaway.

If you prefer to be right on the beach, there are plenty of Fort Myers hotels on the waterfront. These can fill up in the summer; book early if you're planning to visit between late May and early September. The barrier islands just off the coast have some of the area's most laidback accommodations, so if you're looking for a real getaway, these small islands are a great choice.
