Get back to nature in friendly Wisconsin

Wisconsin state is a place to embrace the great outdoors, where visitors will find a premier destination for fishing, hiking, historical culture and, of course, beer. People from Wisconsin are known to be some of the friendliest in the nation, and if you strike up a conversation with a local, you might have a new buddy for life—or at least for the rest of your stay. From the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior to the up-and-coming neighborhoods of Milwaukee, the vast state of Wisconsin covers a diverse range of people and places.

What to see
Lakes

The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is the crowning glory of wild Wisconsin, and it's composed of 21 small islands and over a dozen miles of coastline on Lake Superior. The area has old-growth forests, impressive cliffs and windswept beaches. There are fantastic sea caves to explore by kayak. For those who like to be even further out in nature, venture into the Chain O' Lakes deep in Wisconsin's Northwoods. This area has 28 interconnected lakes in one of the state's most remote locations, and it's where you'll find some of the best fishing in the nation.

Waterfalls and marshes

At 165 feet tall, Big Manitou Falls is the fourth-largest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. The best point to view the falls from is the south, and the area has over eight miles of trails for exploring the main falls and the smaller Little Manitou Falls above them.

Horicon Marsh is the biggest freshwater cattail marsh in the United States, and it is home to over 290 species of birds. When you visit this wetland ecosystem, be sure to bring a pair of binoculars to observe the herons, turkeys, terns and countless other flying creatures without disturbing them. Canoeing or kayaking is the easiest and driest way to explore the marsh.

Milwaukee

Milwaukee is Wisconsin's largest city, and it's enjoying a renaissance after a tough time in the 80s and 90s. The city is famous for producing beer, and it was once home to the world's four largest breweries: Miller, Schlitz, Pabst and Blatz. Today, the city is more focused on building its infrastructure than making suds, but the beverage still plays an integral role in Milwaukee society. A tour of the still-operating Miller plant is a great way to learn about the city's history, and the many small breweries scattered around town are generally excellent.

Shopping

Unique shops, boutiques and shopping malls give Wisconsin a cosmopolitan edge, perfect for picking up both treats and essentials. Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward houses upscale and trendy stores, with restaurants worthy of a fine evening meal.

When to visit

Wisconsin is one of the nation's coldest states, and winters there are nothing to take lightly. Summers are pleasantly mild compared to the rest of the United States, and fall and spring are cool and rainy. If you're planning a trip to Wisconsin in the winter, be sure to pack plenty of weatherproof clothing, including boots suitable for snow. Lake Superior and Lake Michigan can get crowded in the summer, because Wisconsin is extremely pleasant between May and October.

Where to stay
Milwaukee

If you're staying in Milwaukee, there's a broad selection of hotels downtown and near the Riverwalk that are all within walking distance of some of the city's best restaurants and nightlife. Hyatt Place Madison Downtown won the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence in 2014, with its stylish décor and other amenities.

Green Bay

Wisconsin hotels in the tranquil north are always a popular option, with people choosing Green Bay for its sports, farmers markets and wines. Best Western Green Bay Inn Conference Center offers cozy lodgings with easy access to the city’s main attractions.
