Las Gaviotas has so much potential but......I have to call it as I see it: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My wife and I have been to Mexican resorts about 15 times when we were both working. Now that we are retired we were thinking about spending 3 months in Cancun, to get away from our Canadian winter. Of course we new that living in Mexico and vacationing in Mexico are 2 different things. So we decided to try it for one month. We came across Las Gaviotas Hotel on Airbnd. We were there from Feb 1 to Mar 3,2017. During this period 1 canadian dollar was worth 15 pesos and 1 USD was worth about 20 pesos. There are about 35 apartments of which I can only comment on the 4 that I actually saw. The 1st apartment was very outdated and not very clean. The second one was on the 3rd or 4th floor and was not very convenient for retirees like us, since there are no elevators. The apartment we saw 3 weeks later for another family member was much better than the room that we eventually ended up with. Our apartment was very big but dated, with a kitchen, TV room, 2 bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms. The kitchen had 2 small pots, a frying pan, some kitchen utensils, and enough dishes for 6. The gas stove, fridge, coffee maker and microwave were all functional. We had to wash down the kitchen and shower. The window vertical blinds were dirty and some did not function properly. Room service was every 2 days (not every day like it says on Trip Advisor), but this was more than acceptable. The towels were very old and used, with rust spots and some were even delivered with holes in them. The King size bed mattress was very old, but we slept very well on it. There are air conditioners in both rooms and the TV room/kitchen, but we never used it. The property is pet friendly and for the most part the dogs were well behaved. However there were dogs barking from a property across the street till 2am. The pool is small but cleaned everyday. The pergoda is a great place to be away from the sun and look out to the golf course. There are beautiful trees which attracts a variety of birds and all their beautiful sounds. Though there was a facilty for self laundry, however most people went to a laundry service which was about 5 minutes away and very affordable (125 pesos for 5KG). About 7 minutes away was also a small sandwich place and a corner store. To get to Selecto a great grocery store, one could walk to the main boulevard, which is about a 15 minute walk and a short bus ride from there. The bus costs 10 pesos. If walking and taking the bus is not your thing, you can get there by Cab for about 120 pesos. The owner Gerardo and the people working there (Myriam, Delfino and Victor) were all pleasant to deal with.
12/2/2016 (RPC). I wish I had read these reviews before deciding to rent. In addition to these reviews Las Gaviotas does not provide a coffee maker, microwave oven, fully equipped kitchen LOL, no security, no daily maid service as advertised and the list goes on and on. If you decide to stay here, hopefully you like barking dogs!
Avoid this place, there is plenty of proper budget hotels around Cancun area if you are looking for low prices. Staff not friendly at all. Very disorganized management. Avoid Annie and Johnny at reception useless customer service. The owner never faces the real problems. Rooms are so dirty. The towels are so old and they seem to be second hand from other hotels. Sheets and beds I rather not comment. There is not proper breakfast area. The breakfast was horrible. This place it's a shame as it puts mexican hospitality in risk. Don't ruin your holiday/vacation in this place. Honestly after coming to Cancun in the last 10 years there is plenty of choice and good brands around to pick from right by the beach. Shop around!
It's not because I'm picky, I stayed many hostel in Mexico at fraction of the price that were way better. I stayed there on June 23 2016. They were dirt everywhere in the room, dirty sheets and towels, mildew and mushrooms in the shower and the air climatiser was not working because they were too many dirt inside the unit. I don't recommend you that hotel at any price. It look way better on the pictures than in real. Maybe it was good in 1990, but it look like if they don't do maintenance since that time. The manager told me that I will get a credit of 200 pesos on my credit card for the problem with the air conditionner and they never gave me my money back. Any other hotel in Cancun will be better than that...
I rented this apt. from Feb 1st to March 1st. through a lady named Vicki M. She seemed to be the agent for the apartment. All the contact before moving in all went well and the apartment was adequate. Went out for a day trip and came back to all the food in the fridge was ruined. The power had been out for most of that day and was not back on until the next day.Apparently it was due to the hydro bill not being paid on time. I was given money for the inconvenience and for the spoiled food. But the point is that it was very inconvenient as we had no lights, internet, T. V, etc for that time. When I moved in the screen on the patio door had obviously been broken out of frame and been fixed but definitely not correctly. Should have taken a picture of it as when I received my deposit back I was charged for a repair to it. I corresponded to Vicki about it twice but never even got a reply to either of my e-mails.
This "hotel" is really an old condo development that clearly is designed for Mexican families travelling by car and bringing everything with them. For a very reasonable $70 US per night we got a large two bedroom unit....that was stripped of everything other than basic furniture. A full size kitchen had one frying pan and one spoon....no coffee maker, no toaster, nothing. And the off the beaten track location means there is nowhere you can walk to in the morning to get a coffee. When we checked in we were told there was a breakfast included but the next morning there was no sign of life in the dining area, no food, no coffee and no staff. And of course, the supposed wifi did not work at all. This place should not be classified as a hotel at all, it is a very basic rental apartment at best.
Location for the hotel is away from the main Kukulcan Blvd. Parking available along the side of the hotel premise. Reached on a Sunday evening. The secretary has left, and the security helped us with check in. He said to paid via credit card, 20% will be charged. The boss told him that. It's the first time we encounter this issue, and we don't have enough cash, so he said that we can pay the next morning when the secretary is in the office. We later found out from our friend working at the bank that VISA don't allow this to be done, and ask us to obtain two receipts, one for the accommodation, and one for the 20%. When we approach the secretary the next morning, she said that I don't have to pay the 20% again..... However, the staff are friendly. It is apartment with different buildings, and each building has an electronic lock. Which is safe, but most of the time the door is not locked property. Each room has a doorbell. Building has no elevator. Anyways, the unit we got was with basic equipped kitchenette, comfy sofa, and two rooms. The stove's electric lighter is broken, and so we has to use matches. I couldn't figure out how to light the oven, and there is no appropriate plate to bake in the oven... However, the room feels fine, but a bit pricey. And I can hear kids at the upper floor running around in the morning. The cleaning staff who service our room was courteous. When my brothers use the pool, one of them had his toe cut because of the tile. So, please watch out. But he does like the pool.
Las Gaviotas Hotel is a counfortabel place, it's near the downtown of Cancun and de bech, it's quiet, and frendly, it have to small pool but nice, in front have a lagun and all places are beautiful, you are security in this hotel.
We stayed here for New Year's Eve. It was my first time in Cancun and my very first experience there was this place which was awful! Firstly, it was very hard to find because there is no clear signage once you are on Pok ta Pok. After finally finding it and checking in, our "suite" was disgustingly filthy! It was clear no one had cleaned the room before we got there. They simply made the beds and took out the trash. There were four used soap bars in our bathroom alone and two more in the other bathroom along with empty shampoo bottles. There was sand all over the floors, couches, tables, and counter tops, and dirty pans left on top of the stove! You could literally see the food that was caked on the pan. I'd be surprised if they even washed the bedding since they too looked dirty. Thankfully, I always pack our Cocoon sheets so we didn't have to lay on their filthy sheets. We had to keep asking for towels because according to them, "they were being washed" and were not ready yet. The next morning my boyfriend went to get the continental breakfast which was included and they still charged him although later the lady was nice enough to come by, admit her mistake, and give him his money back. After being out all day, we came back and they had swept up the floor and it smelled a little nicer, but they still left the used bars of soap there. It was one of the worse hotel experiences I've had by far and it made for a crappy New Year's Eve and New Year's morning. As soon as I got there I wanted to leave. Do not stay here!!!!!
We stayed at this hotel with my family to spend New Year in Cancún. First, we had to ask for towels every single day. I'm pretty sure this hotel does not have enough towels for the whole rooms. One morning after taking a shower, I noticed the towel had a big hole!! But of course I kept using it and did not complain about it since it was difficult having a towel for each one in my room. Second, my aunt's room air conditioner was not working, they said someone was going to take care of the air conditioner, but this person never showed up, I'm sure the air conditioner still does not work. Silverware in our kitchen had water stain. We had a broken blender and did not had a microwave. One of my aunt's towel dissapeared, probably the maid took it without knowing it belonged to us and not belonged the hotel even though it was a different colour than the towels the hotel gave us. However, my aunt complained about it and the housekeeper gave her another towel.
