Des Moines offers a friendly and easy-paced destination with plenty to do. You can fly from Washington, D.C., to Des Moines in under three hours. Your trip starts at the Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) in northern Virginia. You can get to DCA off of Highway 1 or by taking a 15-minute ride on the Metro from the Capital.
A good place to start your exploration of the city is the state capital building. The spectacular architecture is topped off with its sparkling gold-leaf dome. The Des Moines Art Center has an impressive collection of contemporary art. Afterward, you may want to take a time out from your travels to rest at the PapaJohn Sculpture Park, which features acres of public art. Nearby is the Salisbury House, a beautiful 1920 mansion designated a national treasure. It is also a popular spot for performances in the evening.
When you fly from Washington, D.C., to Des Moines, you ll land at the Des Moines International Airport (DSM). The airport lies on the south side of town about 20 minutes from downtown by car. Autumn offers visitors spectacular colors and cool city temperatures averaging in the high 50s. The Iowa State Fair in August is the biggest event in the state.
