Hays shares its name with the famous fort that served as the gateway to the West in the mid-1800s. The little town on the prairie is in a unique North American ecosystem, and it is hundreds of miles from the nearest metropolitan area. You can fly to Hays in less than an hour from surrounding hubs to the Hay s Regional Airport (HYS).
The rural outpost on the frontier preserves the history of America s westward movement. The town boasts the Ellis County Historical Museum and the Fort Hays State Historical Park. The park is the site of the original fort where a number of the structures have been restored. At various times of the year, the fort offers visitors a chance to see reenactments and cultural events. The town is home to more than 5,000 college students who attend Fort Hays State University, and the university hosts NCAA athletic events throughout the year.
Hays Regional Airport (HYS) sits alongside East 8th Street, only a few minutes from the center of town. The town lies midway between Kansas City and Denver on Interstate 70. The population of Hays swells in July when people come to town for the Wild West Days. Summer weather in Hays is dry and inviting, with temperatures in the low 80s.
