With so many great National Parks, mountains, hills, and lakes to explore, it would be a real shame to come somewhere as nice as Mount Rushmore in South Dakota and not bring your four-legged friend with you to Rapid City.
As Mount Rushmore Memorial Park is the main attraction in the area, visiting it is a must. Sadly, the park is not that dog-friendly, as dogs are only allowed in a very small area at the base of the mountain where there is a small pet-exercise area. Therefore, take your photo and then head to some of the regions much more dog-friendly areas.
Drive up to Bear Mountain, just a 20-minute drive from Mount Rushmore, where your pooch will get excited to see bears, wild deer, and buffalo out on the mountain. There is also a large open field where you can let your dog out to stretch its legs and have a run.
Right in the heart of the Black Hills, not far from Rapid City, lies one of the most dog-friendly towns in the region. Hill City is home to over 22 dog-friendly businesses, including lovely cafes and lunch spots. You can take Fido for a walk at nearby Sylvan Lake first, then head to Hill city for a much-needed feed.
Alpine Inn serves delicious European food on the menu and both you and your dog can indulge in it outside on the patio while enjoying the view. Another nice pet-friendly restaurant is Murphy’s Pub and Grill in Rapid City. They will bring water for your thirsty pooch and do a mean burger as well. Also, Thirsty's is very dog-friendly and has great Tex-Mex on offer.
