Nice historic hotel in excellent location. Rooms have been redone. The two different rooms I had both lacked chairs to sit and a desk to put my laptop on to work.

Terrible or nonexistent parking during the day unless you want to walk 2 or 3 blocks. Valet parking for $15 per day. Great location, comfortable for a 100 year old Hotel

Service staff is good. Bed is comfortable. Our room quite frankly sucked. The bathroom Was extremely small. The room was tiny. We reserved a delux room. That is not what we got. No view. I was really disappointed in hotel. My money will be spent elsewhere when I stay in Rapid Again.

Beautiful and clean hotel. Nice rooms. Large TV. On site bar was great. Only complaint I have is the housekeeper came into my room while I was sleeping at approx. 8:15 a.m. She knocked once to which I replied "sleeping". Then, she just entered the room. The rest of the staff was great!

Construction work was annoying. Hope in few months it gets better.

We stayed in room 419. From 1030 at night until 6 in the morning there was a terrible thumping noise every 15 minutes. I had small children staying with me and they were scared still and did not sleep as well. I called down to the front desk about 4am and was told "there are no ghosts it is the pipes and boiler steam and it can not be load enough for me to hear that well." I informed the front desk person I was not worried about ghosts I just wanted sleep. The thumping was loud enough for me to capture on my cell phone as a recording. When checking out I again stated the noise kept us up all night and the front desk person was in disbelief that they was any noise so I had her listen to the recording. I was told sorry but can't do anything about our stay but, here have a coffee card and a couple of chocolates. I was also told the room had a bathtub so the kids could bath (all under 6) and there was only a stand up shower. When asked to change rooms initially was told there were no other rooms at this time. Check out person told me I should of requested another room since we had problems. What the heck how were there rooms open for her but not the other shifts. Needless to say I do not think I will be staying at this facility again.

I don't get to vacation often as a self employed business man. I spent several hours looking online at hotels in the area of Mt Rushmore. The photos of the hotel seemed to show a style that was reflective of the area and its history. The photos of the rooms showed that they were spacious and well decorated. I reserved a king deluxe room with the expectation that my wife and I would be comfortable for the one night. The room we were given was so small that there was just room to walk around the bed and the bathroom was remodeled from a small (think very small) closet. I immediately request that they assign us another room and they had two available, one of which was large enough to be comfortable although they had by now explained that all of their bathrooms were formerly closets This one was a slightly larger closet. The staff were both courteous and friendly. The online photos are very deceiving and I would not stay there again unless I reserved a suite. Disappointing.

Staying at the Alex Johnson was great! The room was spotless and very roomy. The rooftop restaurant has great dishes and every place is very typical and nice.

I didn't have much time there, but did enjoy the place.

The hotel and rooms were outdated. There was a big stain on the carpet in our room. The bathroom was very small and you could hear the other guests in the hall and in other rooms. One of the two elevators were broken so the waits were long. It was overpriced for the condition of the hotel and rooms. On the positive side, the hotel is located downtown in walking distance of several good restaurants, the staff was friendly, and they have a very nice rooftop bar/restaurant with great views. This hotel was more expensive than the Bellagio in Las Vegas, with we stayed in right after the Alex Johnson Hotel, and the Bellagio was much nicer.

This is a historical hotel with comfortable updates. If you enjoy going a bit off the beaten path, this hotel is great. The second floor has framed new clippings to give you some fun background of the hotel. We stayed here as a starting point for our "America the Beautiful" summer National Park trek. In the morniing, Mount Rushmore was just a short hop down the highway.

Great location, plenty of restaurants and shops close buy. Stayed in newly remodeled room, small bathrooms, but very nice. Visit pawnmuseum nearby

The Alex Johnson is in the process of being remodeled and it is looking great. We were in a junior suite, which was not much bigger than a standard room, but it was comfortable. Bathroom was very small however Housekeeping did a great job keeping the room neat and clean. Registration staff were pleasant and efficient. This is the ideal location for all things downtown Rapid City and makes for a great base if you're touring the hills.

I was thrilled to find a room at Hotel Alex Johnson. I love the historicity and beauty of old buildings. My room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. I loved that it had a coat closet plus a regular closet. The fridge and microwave were housed in a small armoire. There were lots of convenient outlets for charging devices, but no USB ports. The staff was great, friendly and knowledgeable. The only quibble I had is that there is no info about parking on their website so I had parked my car in the wrong lot before checking in. You can't beat the ambience or location if you enjoy a downtown vibe close to restaurants and shops.

This was the second time staying at the Alex Johnson. The staff was phenomenal and very accommodating. When a prior guest had stayed on in my room they upgraded me to another without blinking an eye. The lounge on the roof was spectacular. And right in the middle of Rapid City. Although the rooms may be a bit outdated they are comfortable and quaint. Will definitely be back again!

I wanted the best room they had for our Anniversary. The pictures of the room on the internet looked nothing like the one we got. We left, although they said they would not give us a refund. We drove all the way home to ND. The room was small, and had an odor. It was right next to RR tracks and you could hear the train going by. There were no robes like stated in the advertising. Told them I did not want to be by their supposed haunted room and they put us 3 doors away from it on the same floor. Would never stay in a place like this. They make it look fabulous on their website, not even close...sincerely dissappointed.

We waited over 40 minutes for the valet and the front desk implied he was available...

great travel to mount rushmore, nice atmosphere great staff thank you

My husband and I spent our first anniversary here for a night away. It was a beautifully quaint hotel and the service was great.
