McCarren Hotel & Pool

I stayed here for five nights with my husband on a visit to Brooklyn to see our daughter. In a nutshell: 1. The Good: Location is great for restaurants, shopping, and proximity to the subway. The hotel's fitness center is clean and well-equipped with machines, weights, treadmills, and ellipticals. The ATM in the hotel is very convenient. The front desk staff are cordial. 2. The Bad: Had to request to have our room swept as it was obvious it wasn't done daily as a matter of course, and after four nights, sheets weren't changed. Also, the blower for the hallway ac was right outside our door and it "whirred" 24/7. It was obnoxious to me, but my husband thought of it as "white noise." Pillows were so-so. 3. The Ugly: On the weekend, the pool noise and blasting music were more obnoxious than the hallway blower. The hotel sells day passes to non-guests and the pool quickly gets overrun to the point where you don't feel like it's an amenity as a hotel guest. It literally looked and sounded like Daytona beach week/spring break. If any of these things appeal to you, by all means stay here. Next time, we won't.

Trendy with Great Atmosphere and Vibe! Have been to the POOL several times this season. My tan is on point. Great for bringing friends who are in town, my friends from LA and DC both loved it as well. As a New Yorker its a easy escape/staycation from the concrete jungle. Food is amazing love the lobster rolls and grilled corn. Its delish! It can get packed at times but that's what I would expect for a trendy place in NYC. Their drinks are amazing as well, last time ordered one and it came in a copper pineapple (great photo for instagram). Hope to make it back again this summer.

I really enjoyed my first stay a couple years back when I was in NYC for work meetings. The rooms, the customer service, the experience...it was all top-notch. Ever since then its my go to when I travel to NYC. Awesome place and amazing staff! Martin is always there to greet me upon my arrival and departures as well as some great conversation

I checked into this hotel as it looked good from the internet. Once I arrived I checked out and moved to the William Vale. The room was tiny, the Air Conditioner did not cool the room and there was not a place to sit with any type of desk etc. In addition, it took forever to get checked in.

Went for work and was very impressed. My room was really good and huge with a great roof garden looking over the city. Also great pool area with loads happening. The location is perfect for getting about to.

It will probably always be the Brooklyn hotel I choose but still, there is room to improve. In terms of cleanliness, windows need washing! And be sure to check out if the pool is being rented out to a group on a day you planned to use it.

The team at the McCarren is amazing. Ivana, James and the bellman (so sorry his name escapes me) are all spectacular. They are available to assist to every need without hesitation. The difference with this hotel and the level of service is that they are clearly happy to help you out. It's not a begrudging assistance, which is refreshing. In addition, the rooms are beautiful, the area is walk able and the nights are quiet enough to relax. 7 stars out of 5! Keep it up!

We came back to the hotel at 1am and found the bottom sheet stained with body fluid. We asked to have it changed but were told someone would have checked first (like we would lie about it). After checking the sheet, the staff member handed us a sheet and, when we asked if we had to make the bed ourselves, the answer was "yup" After that the guy left. Once we removed the sheet, the mattress turned out to be stained as well, and again with body fluid. The new sheet was stained as well. Being so late we had no other option but to make the bed and go to sleep. The next day we went to the pool - free for hotel guests - but minutes after we sat on our chairs the pool attendant told us we had to buy our chairs or leave. Once we got to the check out, we complained about what happened and nobody moved a finger. The icing on the cake was finding out that a couple checking out close to us had the exact same issue. Rude staff members and lack of customer service. We were treated in a very disrespectful way, something you may not even experience at a motel in the middle of nowhere.

On arrival at this hotel, everything seemed fine. Apart from a late check-in time of 4:00pm all seemed OK. My first sign that things might not be great came when the bell hop insisted on taking our bags from us, even after we said it was our preference to keep them. He said "your trying to put me out of a job if you really wanna keep em!" Again, when we were going up to our room, again we stated and tried to insist on our preference to carry our own luggage but he already had the bags and was walking into the elevator. When in the room, he lingered for a while, I assume expecting a tip. Our next issue came when we ordered a bucket of ice. A simple task, and at a hotel where we paid over $500 for a room that was 235 sq ft, I expected it to be delivered promptly. Twenty minutes pass, nothing; we call down and the say "it's on its way up now!" to no avail. Twenty more minutes pass and we place another call. "It didn't arrive?" No, it didn't. It took me having to go down to the lobby and demanding ice for us to be given some. Add to that the thumping of club music that permeates the room until the pool shuts down, and the tarnished finishes of our room and I couldn't wait to get out.

The McCarren swimming pool is the best pool in New York. It has an open space, cool fresh water, super comfortable beds, fun crowd, incredibly nice staff. Eric, who is the owner, controls everything and makes sure that everything is perfect. It has an Ibiza flavor in a very urban environment. I am so happy I found it - I have tried so many pools in Manhattan and I have always been disappointed. It is a real oasis. Flaminia Lubin
