Southwest Las Vegas is a mellow sister to Sin City
Southern Nevada is home to one of the liveliest cities in the world: Las Vegas. In a desert valley, Las Vegas is world-renowned for its 24-hour lifestyle, endless gourmet restaurants representing a microcosm of world cuisine, and the huge pleasure palaces which line The Strip. People travel from all over the world to play hard here, but the wider area of Las Vegas has much more to it than the well-known skyline might suggest. Southwest Las Vegas is filled with peaceful suburbs and cultural spots where you can escape the crowds but still have access to all the fun.
Where to Stay
You don't need to stay on the Strip in order to experience what the city of Las Vegas has to offer. Southwest Las Vegas has some great off-Strip hotels that provide the same great features as the city center locations, as well as chains like Best Western and Holiday Inn represented near to McCarran International Airport (LAS). You can still get the best of both worlds with hotel casinos and spa-style suites around streets like West Sahara and Blue Diamond Road, when you want to breeze through town without the frantic pace of the Downtown district.
This southerly neighborhood around Alta Drive is a calm, green spot, home to the Charleston Heights Arts Center with its dance meets and artist-led workshops. Play a few hoops on the basketball court or have a go at roller hockey in Charleston Heights Park on your days off from The Strip.
An urban-plan district built to the west of Downtown, The Lakes benefits from Spring Mountain views and makes a handy jumping-off point for the Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area. Designed around Lake Sahara, it has a family-friendly vibe that's still home to a few well-known hotel names like Hilton.
Angel Park Lindell
Home to an expansive green at Angel Park Golf Club, Angel Park Lindell is a small neighborhood near enough to the action to offer up a few gaming houses, but it has a more chilled pace than Downtown Vegas. Stay and play at Sun Coast Hotel and Casino, as well as Rampart Casino, before checking out some of the local pizzerias and casual eateries.
A quiet college neighborhood near the College of Southern Nevada and Firefighters Memorial Park, Buffalo has plenty of amenities in terms of retail and dining, with restaurants along West Sahara Avenue and The Springs Shopping Center nearby.
If you're coming to southwest Vegas, you'll probably arrive via McCarran International Airport (LAS), which has easy access to the I-215 and I-15. There is also a bus which serves the airport, Downtown and outlying areas of the city. Drivers can also aim for the I-215 beltway, an interstate that circles the entire city of Las Vegas and allows you to easily get to any side of town in any direction.
Once arrived, RTC buses run to and from The Strip, and from there you can also use the Las Vegas monorail, which shuttles north and south along Las Vegas Boulevard.
There are misconceptions that, due to its desert location, Las Vegas temperatures are consistently hot. Although the town does experience extreme heat in the summer, it also has been known for quite a bit of rainfall and milder off-season temperatures. During the winter time you can also take a quick trip north to Mt. Charleston for a romp in the snow.
