Though Las Vegas is known for its ritzy casinos, decadent shows and neon lights, this city in the Mojave Desert has humble origins. The area was settled by Paleo-Indians who lived as nomads and camped in various areas throughout the city. A European named Rafael Rivera discovered the valley and named it Las Vegas, which is Spanish for "the meadows." The area was then lush and green with wild grass and plenty of water.
McCarron International Airport is located east of the Las Vegas Freeway and north of Paradise Valley. Shuttles from Airline Limousine Corporation/Las Vegas Limousine can take passengers from the airport to hotels on the Strip for $7, and a trip downtown will cost $8.50. Visitors who enjoy gambling should head to one of the city's many casinos. The MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, the Bellagio, Tropicana and the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino are all popular choices. Outdoor enthusiasts can book a Valley of Fire Natural Wonders ATV tour. Prices start at $204.99, and travelers can experience 17 miles of off-road adventure.
