Leaving Chicago

The city of Chicago receives most of its air service from O'Hare International Airport. The airport lies outside of the city, about 17 miles from the city's center. The trip from the center of town to the airport is no problem, as the city's Blue Line train will get you there for just $2.25. Taxi service to the airport is also available for about $40. The train will get you there in 45 minutes, while the taxi takes 30. Driving to the airport is also an option, with parking available at daily rates beginning at $9. If you plan to park for more than 30 days, you will need to reserve a space ahead of time.

The airport features a number of restaurants. Tuscany and Manchu Wok are just a couple of the more traditional restaurants available, but there are a few fast-food restaurants as well, including McDonald's and Brioche Doree. After you eat, you're ready to catch your flight on one of the many airlines traveling from O'Hare to London, such as Virgin Atlantic, Delta Air Lines, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, US Airways, United Airlines and American Airlines.

Destination London

London is the capital of both England and the United Kingdom. Located on the banks of the Thames River, London has served as a center of trade since its founding nearly two millennia ago by the Romans. Today it's a vibrant center of culture and the arts, with a multicultural population that keeps the city changing constantly.

The London Experience

Most flights into London from Chicago will land at London Heathrow Airport, located 14 miles to the west of central London. There are three ways to make your way from the airport to the city-travel by Heathrow Express for the fastest journey, use the London Underground to save money or take a taxi. The express train costs about $28 and takes only 15 minutes, while the London Underground train costs $7.50 and takes just under an hour. Taxis take between 30 to 60 minutes to make the trip, with fares starting at about $70.

The best times to visit London are in May, June or September, when you're likely to experience the best weather the city has to offer. In May, the temperatures are between the mid-60s and the upper 40s in degrees Fahrenheit, so a moderately thick jacket is needed. June is a bit warmer, with temperatures running between the low 70s and upper 50s. You can dress a little lighter then, but you will still need a jacket. September temperatures range from the high 60s to low 50s, so dress should be about the same as that worn for a trip in May. London is also a rainy city, so be sure to bring along an umbrella.

You should have no trouble finding things to do in London. Art lovers can enjoy British art at the Tate Britain art gallery and then take the Tate-to-Tate boat over to the Tate Modern to view one of the city's best collections of modern art. London is also filled with a variety of specialty shops, from Rough Trade East's record store to Davenports Magic Shop. For an unforgettable view of the city, take a ride in the London Eye.
