Kimpton Buchanan Hotel

3.5 out of 5.0

Recent guest reviews

We wanted to be close to SF's Cherry Blossom Festival, and the Buchanan's Japanton location is excellent. Room was quiet, clean and comfortable overall, however the set-screw for the tub/shower handle was missing and we were unable to take a bath!. With a king-sized bed, there should be a chair in addition to the one at the desk so two people have a place to sit. The unadvertised bonus for this room was the children playing on the day care center's playground next door.

Overall an average experience. The bed is super comfortable and made the experience better. The room needs dusted better. Also, if you have a party larger than 4, do not go to the restaurant. We had 8 and they said they were full at 8p.m., but half of the restaurant was empty. Ive stayed in better places.

Very nice location. Many asian restaurants to choose from within walking distance. Wine tasting in lobby for one hour. On site restaurant is convenient with simple menu. Average food. 8floors. We were on 3rd floor. Window seat in room good for people watching. Parking was very limited at hotel and cost $38/day. I imagine on weekends they run out of spaces and they said they direct you to nearby garage.

Nice stay. Only problem was not enough light in room. All lights were either high intensity or dim bulbs. Sort of depressing. Otherwise good!

Good hotel, but restaurant and breakfast procedure has to be improved. Do not recommend to take breakfast at the hotel.

This is a great hotel, especially if you have a dog. It's very close to the Fillmore in Japantown and has plenty of great restaurants within walking distance. They have bikes you can rent and a shuttle to the airport. They also have an awesome outdoor patio on the 2nd floor which our room has direct access to. I really enjoyed our stay.

The hotel is newly acquired and under construction. The price is reduced for that reason. There is not enough parking on site. Our room smelt like someone had just fried fish in it. Because of this The front desk did not charge us the $45 for parking.

Overall was a great stay. The room design is lacking (some design elements were not thought through, but I am a design snob being a hotel designer myself). The lobby is well designed, fun concept and elements. The complimentary wine in the afternoon is a really nice feature that brings guests out and encourages mingling. The corridor design needs to be updated (was not only my point of view, but another guest brought it up during the wine hour)..... Overall - convenient, clean, good value for the money.

The hotel definitely served its purpose. It is definitely very different than hotels I've stayed at before. It seems to be inspired by asian fusion and has a spunk to it, but in a good way. We dropped off our bags and left for the day to explore. The staff was very helpful and friendly. We got in late and basically just used the hotel for overnight - but no complaints there. The rooms for comfortable and spacious. The hotel hallways are colorful and cheerful. Would recommend.

It was Ok for one night stay. Good location, clean, a bit noisy at night, doesn't include free parking and street parking is very restricted...

Chose this hotel because it was the closest and best value I could find. The bed looked super comfortable on the website, so I chose it mainly because of that. I got to the hotel and was helped with my bags and offered wine. The room was nice, and clean. Construction going on so it was noisy for a couple hours but stopped around 8pm. The bed was HORRIBLE. Very very stiff and made a lot of noise when you moved. I didn't get a good sleep, and I needed one for work. :( It was disappointing. When I left the front desk man gave me an umbrella and let me pull into the garage so I didnt get soaked. The service and location are the only things that make this hotel redeemable. :)

The murals on the walls in the common areas, rooms and even the elevators were interesting and unique. The beds were very comfy and the rooms were clean. My only issue with this venue was the parking situation. They don't have enough parking for hotel guests and we almost got stuck having to park at an off site lot. They charge $25/day for parking so keep that in mind when you book this hotel.

Lots of great walking around. Stayed there last year, too. This year seemed maybe smidge not as clean but don't hold me to it--believe it is now a Kimpton Hotel last year was a Joie de Vivre Hotel no idea what the difference is. Really a pleasant stay. Japan Center very close. Filmore St is nice to walk around.

Great hotel, in fantastic location....loved anime themes!

This hotel has a good location to public transportation to take you into the real heart of SF, but I expected a little more from it. No pool, no microwaves in room and no breakfast, but they did have a wine night 5-6 every night while we were there. The rooms did have fridges though, which was nice. Also though, all 3 nights we stayed there I was awoken early in the AM to the sound of trash trucks. We were on the front of the building. It was very loud. You could hear street noise at night too.

Hotel Tomo is very close to the city with reasonable price than downtown hotels. If you take bus, it will only take 20 min to downtown. (SF downtown hotels are way over priced) It's not luxurious hotel but room was clean and big enough. Some of the things need improvement like not having luggage rack or slippers in the room. TV channels were very limited compare to other hotels. Try to get higher floor room cause you can hear some party or drunk people noise on Fri/Sat night. Overnight parking is way over priced.

The hotel has officially changed owner and is no longer call TOMO by the time we departed. However like many review, we love the Manga theme and details on the hotels, room is fairly size and amenity is about the same as Holiday Inn or Best Western hotels. The location is superb due to close and easy access to Union square but right across Jap town plaza that is pack with restaurant so there is no need to drive ( driving and parking is a nightmare in SF) Hotel charges $ 29/overnight parking which seem ridiculous until we found out other hotel were charging a $60 at my friends. Overall good value hotel, I would come back to see what new owner do to the hotel .

Rooms were very large by most city room hotel sizes but advertised "courtyard view" was very overstated. Patio doors open to a ? patio that was barren and below sidewalk grade. WE booked this room for the "view" ended up with same room view as my sister that was $45 less per night. On plus side- hotel manager adjusted our rate but this was after our stay. Hotel was over-booked due to a convention- no ability to change rooms. Front desk unresponsive - mgr. was not there during our weekend stay. Quite spacious rooms - ideal for family with city buses close by to get attractions. Japantown dining make evenings out enjoyable and walkable. Not convention rates are affordable for SFO. Front desk quick to help with transportation needs- call cabs quickly.

Hotel Tomo is a very pleasant hotel in a good safe area. Not a lot of frills but clean rooms and attentive staff. Could you more tv channels but otherwise good value.

My Japan-obsessed daughters loved this anime-themed hotel, but for the price, I feel it should have been a little more special. The anime-style knickknacks that are featured in all the promotional material are all but missing from the rooms, and the lobby was not much to speak of. That said, the staff at the counter were very helpful, and the room was very clean and comfortable. If it had been about $50 less, I would have considered it a good deal.

Hi, Anonymous, Based on your other reviews, I was able to discern you were looking to dine at the restaurant on Friday of last weekend. They apologize for not explaining well that they had a large party booked for those tables at 8:30pm, and will work on their communication moving forward. On the hotel end of things, I apologize for the dust on the top of that tall furniture, and will make sure that ladder-enabled cleaning rotates through that area next. Thank you!

Hi, Susan, and thanks for staying with us! I'm so glad you enjoyed the hotel and neighborhood. As far as parking goes, there is usually space available right here, and the larger public garage is one block away at really good rates. I hope we'll see you again!

Thanks for the praise of the staff and location here! We'll duck into some rooms and see if we can get a feel for this high- vs. low-intensity bulb issue. Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks so much, Mandy, I think this is the first shout-out I've read online about our fun new courtyard space! The lawn games are ready, and the fire pit should arrive at any moment :).
